Oni Press will be heating things up this August with a new serving of sizzling titles. Last month Oni resurrected the dark forbidden worlds of EC Comics with EPITAPHS FROM THE ABYSS. Now it doubles the trouble with CRUEL UNIVERSE, the second EC horror anthology series! While EPITAPHS is straight-up horror, CRUEL UNIVERSE delves into the sci-fi end of it, with a focus on aliens, mad scientists, resurrected dinosaurs and other deadly threats! A large gathering of talent was assembled to make this one happen: Corinna Bechko, Chris Condon, Eisner Award nominee Matt Kindt and Edgar Award winner Ben H. Winters all contributed stories, which were then brought to life by artists Jonathan Case, Kano, Artyom Topilin and Caitlin Yarsky. The first of five issues goes on sale August 7!….and EPITAPHS #2 follows on August 21! On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, Oni has begun publishing Sesame Street comics. The first issue is called “Grover Lends A Hand” and we’d describe what happens, but that title just about

Two new Rick and Morty comics in one month? Take my money, Oni Press! 'Youth in Rickvolt' sounds like a hilarious premise - Rick breeding his own Mortys? Classic Rick. Gotta see how that blows up in his face. 'Finals Week' with President Curtis facing off against Doofus Rick? This is gonna be epic!

Oni Press is really leaning into the horror this month. Cruel Universe with its EC Comics pedigree and focus on sci-fi chills? That's definitely intriguing. I gotta admit, though, recreating that same level of raw terror and social commentary from the 50s might be a tall order. Still, I'll give it a shot. Epitaphs #2 is a no-brainer, though. I devoured the first issue, and I'm eager to see what nightmares those twisted minds conjure up next.

Akogun: Brutalizer of Gods reaching its epic conclusion? Now that's something I've been eagerly anticipating! Murewa Ayodele and Dotun Akande have crafted a truly immersive African dark fantasy experience. Seeing the rage-fueled Ogun clash with the desert gods in a final showdown? That promises to be visually stunning and narratively powerful. This is a series that deserves all the recognition it can get.

Talli: Daughter of the Moon has been on my radar for a while now. This French Laotian comic by Sourya looks like a captivating fantasy saga that blends the best of manga and bandes dessinées. The story of Talli, a young woman grappling with her newfound summoner powers and a relentless enemy, seems right up my alley. Volume 3 might be a jumping-in point, but the art style is gorgeous enough to make me want to track down the previous volumes too.
