Still, Kamen Rider is blatantly a kids show, right down to the gimmicks. Those gimmicks are designed for children, and if they're going to bring Kamen Rider overseas Bandai is gonna wanna sell merchandise to the intended target audience.
So that means either:
A.) A heavily edited Kamen Rider dub appropriate for children to watch.
B.) An American adaptation.
Both would probably be at an earlier time slot when children would generally watch TV.
Also anime, even kids anime, is a little more generally respected among all audiences than Tokusatsu is. Hell, the only thing most Americans know about toku is Power Rangers, and they'll instantly label it as a kids show and probably disregard it. So there is the ratings issue.
And people watch Naruto, Bleach and worship the ground around the kids shows.
Before anime came here, most only knew about Robotech, Astro Boy, Speed Race, Tranzor Z, G Force or Voltron . Highly cut and corny kids shows that remained a huge niche until the late 80s and 90s where the juicy stuff leaked out to the open. Most people scoff at cut anime and want the source.
It is generally more well respected? Hmm... just tell them that its live action anime like UltraViolet or any other action flick styled in the same sense and they'll eat it up. People cannot respect something unless they see more of it, and unless the opening is made and we show the demand, why should they bother? Plus there is some cross-over via Guyver and Skullman, Zetman [Which got an anime btw] and perhaps other shows as well. People thought all anime were Astro Boy and Speed, but did it stop anime fans from publicizing the works via fan subs and creating an industry for anime? No it did not.
Nerds will buy anything that makes them feel closer to their fandom , and why would this not be the case? And considering what people do at those hours generally, its not as if it wouldn't jar with the demographic that accepts the Otaku culture as their own. Plus if one compliments the other why not?
