Daaaammmmnnnn...that's certainly going to affect a lot of pensions, etc. to those that live in that area.
How is this surprising? Watching it from where I live, since I live in the Metro area, alongside getting up to speed on its history, I am not surprised the city has failed as spectacularly. It's a black hole and a parasite to what is around it, and to be honest, the areas outside the city are far better as it is. Which isn't surprising in the slightest because it isn't a haven of stupidity and ongoing corruption much like Detroit ,Chicago and other similar areas.
Turning on the local news, killings are the norm and are never reported to the mass media, even though they are black-on-black. [which isn't a civil rights issue? How isn't poverty and gang violence en masse not civil rights?] It is telling that once unions stepped in, the areas of Flint and Detroit steadily declined, alongside banana republic principles being the norm, that these cities were doomed. Due to riots that were more on mob mentality that anything, people left alongside the fact of these big three being the core business of the State being the absolute most asinine idea of the century.
Corporate greed and union greed collectively ruined Detroit, cashing into elections which would allow them to suck the city dry and place their leaders in, resulting with fiends such as Kwame Kilpatrick coming into power and worsening the situation. The bail outs have done nothing towards helping the economy and with among the highest tax rates in the nation [alongside persecution of small businesses like my family owns] , the supposed Democrat-Socialist policies that people so admire have caused many in our State and Detroit to be ashamed of being a Michigander or Detroiter.
Anyone who is even proud of being from a city that is a sinkhole or mole on the face of the United States deserves a reality check. And in my opinion, Detroit needs to be allowed to fail rather than "bailed out". Why should a failed state and city be the burden of the entire United States to handle? It should be left to decay or to remake itself, but the city's citizens obviously must be collectively the dumbest human beings on the face of the planet for electing leaders which allowed this situation to happen, which allowed for the city to be decimated. To allow for the riots to push the majority of the city's wealthy and not-ignorant population to the suburbs.
I sometimes go into the city, but it is made of ruin and it hardly resembles anything in the Western world other than Beira, Grand-Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire, mainly post-colonial African cities. Many apartment complexes are virtually abandoned and have their windows bashed out, a huge chunk of the city's homes are abandoned and are either used for drug dealing or sit-ins. In fact, I recall going on a photo shoot for my AP Art class back in 2011 and witnessing much of these abandoned buildings like the Opera house and that one building used in Transformers. Much of the infrastructure thereby is in need of repair, but metal from the streetlights are ripped off and often looted.
Its hard to say I am proud from this area or state because, really I want to be because of its legacy and what it used to be. But that is not the case. Feel free to judge me and bash me on this or call me an evil person, but it really sucks to be around here. I feel angry that the incompetence of our leaders before and now led this amazing city into a moral, political and societal decline. Well aside from the few enclaves of niceness that the city has focused on, there are too many misplaced priorities such as sports, money and building a new hockey arena that make the majority of the city an unlivable dystopia you would imagine from the likes of Mad Max , Hokuto no Ken or some war zone /ground zero of Chernobyl.
Do I feel that all Detroiters are horrible? Hardly because I know and have a few friends who happen to be from this city. However, this does not speak for those who vote and do not vote within the city for the leaders who only are in there for themselves.
