Defenders of The Realm: The Return (Book One)

*** Part Three ***

The bright sun above the Pacific Ocean shone down on Gerard’s sea transport. Left unmanned since the previous night, it hovered gently above the rolling swells. The soft sounds of its twin engines created a lulling hum that drifted into nothingness. The deck was Spartan with nothing present except the wheelhouse located on the starboard side of the bow. Expanding from the primary hull at the stern were twin pods housing the vessel’s propulsion units. The vessel’s main computer chirped, signaling an incoming remote command. The ship’s hydraulic systems began whirring as they activated the transport’s diving platform. The platform lowered from the center of the main deck and descended into the ocean below. Plunging past the surface, the twin hydraulic arms disappeared in the dark blue sea.

Seconds later, a second chirp could be heard and the system reactivated. When the platform withdrew from the Pacific, two figures stood atop the structure. One was Gerard LaFleur’s enhanced robot and the other was Kor’digh, the first of Bruch’oda’s warriors to return to Earth. The warm water trickled off the stern face of the fearless warrior as the platform secured itself with the vessel. Shaking off the last traces of the sea, Kor’digh stood tall in his midnight blue armor. A matching helmet, complete with ferocious horns, capped his skull. Twin bones crossed his breastplate and a pair of ornate scabbards hung from his belt. The sheaths for his weapons were intricately carved amber and their masters fashioned in fine leather. The blood cups were gold and curved to the side, allowing ample protection for the hand.

The mighty warrior stepped forward, taking in his new surroundings. Kor’digh allowed himself a momentary pause before continuing his mission because he thought he would never again see the serine beauty of Earth. After five thousand years in the Shadow Realm, anything beautiful was to be treasured. When he was ready, Kor’digh turned to his robot compatriot. “I hope leaving just one of you behind will be enough,†Kor’digh uttered as the robot’s eyes flashed.

The signal sent by the robot activated the ship’s engines and flung the transport onward to its next location. “I’m sure it will be more than enough,†Gerard responded through his avatar’s external speakers. “I think you’re all over reacting. There are none of these Defenders you speak of still around. They’ve got to all be dead,†he concluded.

Letting his hand graze the pommel of his left sword, Kor’digh allowed his thoughts wander, “We’ll see soon enough.â€Â

Master Li continued to meditate deep within the hallowed halls of the Great Vault. The low light from the gemstones enabled the sage to quickly enter his trance and monitor the Mystic Doors. It was difficult for him to focus all of his energy on the task at hand as he knew time was of the essence for his comrades to find their successors. But it was not long before he sensed what he had feared most: a cosmic imbalance. “Can it be?†he wondered, knowing full well, what the answer was. He attuned his body to the sensation and increased his focus. His deep breaths allowed his mind to travel at the speed of thought until he was absolutely sure. In that instance, he flashed his eyes open and ceased his meditation.

Kicking his feet out from under him, Master Li leapt onto his feet. He joined hands and wrapped his fingers around one another as he extended his index fingers outwards. Drawing more chi into his body, Master Li closed his eyes with fierce determination. After drawing in his palms into his chest, he cast his fingers upwards as a swirling mass of red chi descended from heaven and surrounded him. The massive wave of chi flowed through the ancient warrior and carried him out of the Great Vault like an extinguished flame fading in the wind.

Kor’digh and Gerard’s robot stood at the bow of the sea transport. In the midday sun, the crisp spray of the ocean rose up from the Pacific and sprinkled their faces with a fine mist. Their journey was in silence, as Kor’digh had little use or respect for the Frenchman or his creation. They were merely tools to be used and chucked aside at a later time. He continued to scan the horizon wondering when trouble would arrive. His search took less time than expected, when he felt a familiar presence behind him. Kor’digh let the corner of his mouth turn up into a grin. Taking a deep breath, the old warrior slowly turned.

Gerard noticed Kor’digh’s change in position and ordered his creation about face. When the robot had turned around, Gerard understood why Bruch’oda and Qual’och were so adamant about him taking protection to the next Mystic Door.

The pair was no longer alone as Master Li now stood in the face of the mighty sea breeze facing his enemies. His gaze was determined and he stared deep into the hearts of those he faced. The salty wind captured his gi and billowed it outwards, exposing his massive musculature and flawless skin.

“What the hell?†Gerard thought.

“I was wondering who would be the first to arrive,†Kor’digh shouted over the sea, his voice carried by the wind to Master Li’s ears.

Master Li drew his body tighter, readying himself for the forthcoming confrontation. Letting a small grin pierce his lips, he responded to the challenge, “I hope I’m not a disappointment.â€Â

“Hardly,†Kor’digh said as he and the robot walked closer to Master Li. “You see Gerard, this is what his Lordship warned you about. This is one of the Defenders we fought long ago. Where are your friends, Li? Or are you the only one left?†Kor’digh wondered.

“Why all the banter? Let’s get his over with and send this ‘has been’ to his grave,†Gerard spouted.

Pleased at the eagerness at which is comrade displayed, Kor’digh stepped aside as Gerard activated the enhanced robot’s special feature. The X on the metallic beast’s chest flashed red and instantly created ten replicas. Gerard’s brain assimilated the increase data transmissions and further divided his attention between the one he left guarding the Water Mystic Door and the eleven on the ship.

Now facing twelve foes, Master Li knew there was no easy way out – there would be no discourse – no peace – only battle and ultimately death. He withdrew into a fighting stance and summoned his inner chi. The vary nature of fire had been cultivated in his body for eons and coursed through his body. Every cell was fueled by this ancient energy source and when he called upon its might, fire surged forth and his body erupted into a massive wall of fire.

Thousands of miles away, Gerard thrust his body back into his chair in disbelief. Never had he seen such a display of power. Regaining his composure, Gerard secretly wondered if ten copies would be enough to handle the warrior before him. Deciding that he’d better make use of what advantage he had, Gerard ordered his minions to attack. Complying with their master’s wishes, the ten robots moved forward in unison against Master Li.

The fames slowly came to an end and Master Li emerged like a raging phoenix from their wake. No longer was he a feeble, aged man wearing a simple gi, gut rather a determined warrior covered in blood-red armor. The mystical plates were composed of solidified fire chi and shimmered with power as they snugly fit across his torso. Down his arms and legs, a series of overlapping plates protected him. As his eyes narrowed on the approaching robots, a golden flash appeared on his breastplate and his emblem became etched in place.

Cautiously, the duplicated robots, or “Copy Botsâ€Â, surrounded Master Li. The ancient warrior held his ground not moving a single muscle, simply waiting for the storm to begin. His mind quickly assessed the situation and instinctively generated a plan of attack as a robot to his right leapt forward.

Gerard was surprised that Master Li was able to avoid the machine’s advance, for the robots moved with the grace and speed of Olympic Athletes. As the robot approached Master Li, he sidestepped the large robot, coiled his waist, and channeled his fire chi into his left forearm. With the robot passing in front, Master Li’s arm burst into an incredible firestorm of energy and impaled the creature’s back as he untwisted his waist. The searing heat from the fire tore through the metallic skin of the Copy Bot as if it were butter. As he continued his uncoiling motion, Master Li’s arm ripped the torso to shreds and left the lifeless creation to fall to the deck a useless heap of metal.

Gerard’s mouth dropped open as he witnessed this feat of power. Completely stunned, his mind faltered and each of the nine Copy Bots paused for a minute. Seeing his comrade distracted, Kor’digh quipped, “You didn’t think it was going to be easy, did you?â€Â

Shaking off the distraction, Gerard leaned forward in his chair and gripped the arm rests with renewed vigor. He smiled as he ordered the remaining nine Copy Bots to attack at once.

As the Copy Bots converged at his position, Master Li leapt into the air and somersaulted over them. Completing the twisting motion, he landed kneeling on the hard deck. Flicking his arms outwards, he summoned four fire shurricans and sent them towards their designated targets. The flaming stars streaked across the open deck, leaving behind faint traces of fire. These small bursts of fire chi pierced through the metallic chests of four separate Copy Bots, eradicating their power supplies and sending their lifeless hulks into flames before they harmlessly fell to the deck and exploded.

Kor’digh couldn’t help but to smile at the artful display of power Master Li showed. “It is good to know, that he has not grown weak from the passage of time,†he thought, “His defeat will be all the more satisfying.â€Â

Reverence and respect were not the emotions Gerard LaFleur would have chosen to describe his battle with Master Li. Rather; the Frenchman grew increasingly angered that one person could have defeated five of his robots in a matter of seconds. Even now, the five remaining robots tried to pummel the aged man in armor, but Master Li moved like an elusive snake, easily avoiding each kick, jab, and punch.

Master Li quickly freed himself from a cornered position. Squeezing his right hand, the ancient warrior channeled his inner chi to manifest itself in the form of a long and nimble straight sword. Once solid, the flexible blade was bound by its master’s chi and became rigid when Master Li firmly gripped the golden hilt. Not wasting a single moment, he raced forward, charging the advancing Copy Bots. This time, Master Li made no attempt to bypass them and forced a confrontation with each head on. In a series of wrist flicks and cuts, Master Li was able to quickly decapitate each of the remaining Copy Bots with his pristine blade. The strikes were so swift that before the first powerless robot fell, Master Li had time to stop and rest his foot on the head of the last severed head as it lay on the transport’s deck.

Master Li allowed himself a brief smile, as he drew up natural and relished the art of martial combat. It had been a long time since he had used his honed skills against an opponent and he was pleased that his body had not forgotten how to fight. The thought left as quickly as it entered, when a powerful blast of dark chi struck him between the shoulders and sent him flying off his feet. It was only due to his quick reactions that Master Li was able to reach out and grab hold of the transport’s railing to avoid being cast overboard. The ferocious energy strike left his armor blackened with fine trails of smoke rising into the air.

Master Li quickly rooted into the deck, pushing himself away from the railing as he turned around. “I was wondering if you were going to just sit and watch,†he asked.

Kor’digh withdrew his left sword, cradling it tenderly in his hand and rushed Master Li. The pair met in the middle of the transport bay, crossing their swords. “You’ve still got a little fire in you, old man,†Kor’digh taunted as he pushed Master Li back and double snap-kicked his torso. The blow forced the elder Defender stumbling backwards. Seeing an opportunity, Kor’digh leapt forward and jumped into the air unleashing a spinning double smash. While airborne, he slipped his left hand over the hilt of his right sword and released it.

Master Li was keenly aware of his opponent’s tactics and drew his blade in front. Not only was the ancient warrior quick on his feet to avoid both kicks, but he was able to meet Kor’digh’s blade attacks head-on and counter them.

Kor’digh relished the thought of fighting someone his equal again. It had truly been too long since he had met anyone near his match. He stood face-to-face with Master Li and pivoted his body to let the twisting torque of his twin blades throw Master Li into a spinning fall. Quickly, Kor’digh slashed downward with the furry of being trapped in the Shadow Realm for five thousand years. The twin steel blades struck Master Li’s armor, sending sparks shooting into the air as they cut deep into his protection. The sheer force of Kor’digh’s power sent Master Li crashing onto the deck.

Kor’digh wasted no time gloating over Master Li and fluidly continued his attack by turning his blade downward. He stepped closer and attempted to spear the fallen Defender, but Master Li countered by crane sweeping Kor’digh’s legs. The giant Shadow Realm warrior fell back enough to allow Master Li to kip-up onto his feet as if he were a man of only eighteen and began an offensive attack.

Gerard realized he could no longer just sit back and watch his comrade fight alone and activated his robot’s replication feature again. Ten new copies quickly materialized on deck. Gerard settled himself into his chair thinking, “Let’s see him get out of this one.â€Â

Kor’digh quickly recovered and drew into a fighting stance to meet Master Li’s attack. The pair slowly rotated in the center of the cargo area, holding their swords crossed before their faces. Their muscles generated tremendous power as they pushed and shoved while each vied for the advantage. Their faces inched closer until Master Li could smell the scent of death on Kor’digh’s breath.

“Looks like you’re out numbered again,†Kor’digh hissed through his clenched jaw. Sensing a break in Master Li’s concentration when his eyes briefly left contact, Kor’digh shoved the Defender away. Now clear of his enemy, Kor’digh ordered the Copy Bots to attack, “Finish him!â€Â

Gerard ordered the Copy Bots to fire their energy bolts in unison. The beams moved too quickly for Master Li to dodge and detonated against his armor. The blasts hit the weakened armor time and time again. With each impact, electrical sparks shot into the air, signaling the ever weakening state of his protective covering. Before the last blast struck, the armor succumbed to the enormous power of the Copy Bots and shattered. The exploding force of the chi armor deconstructing flung Master Li against the ship’s railing once more. Master Li struggled to remain standing, his wounded body hunched over bruised and bleeding.

“Again! Again!†Kor’digh shouted as his eyes fill with passion. “Again!â€Â

The Copy Bots poised their arms for another round of energy attacks. They simultaneously unleashed them into the air. In his injured state, Master Li wasn’t able to dodge the attacks and the powerful energy beams tore into his body. Wounds erupted through his skin and blood burst from his mouth as his gi exploded. It took every ounce of strength Master Li had to only fall to one knee and not into oblivion.

“It’s over Li,†the Shadow Realm warrior shouted. Motioning with his sword, Kor’digh silently let Gerard know to send another volley of energy toward Master Li.

The Copy Bots fired again, but the pause gave Master Li enough time to summon one last ounce of strength and jump out of the way. Master Li survived the blast, but the ship™s reactor wasn’t as lucky. The resulting explosion threw the Defender into the sea and out of view.

“Damn!†Kor’digh yelled. “So close,†he groaned with his teeth grated and pounding on what was left of the ship’s railing. Kor’digh peered into the sea, hoping to find his enemy and end his life, but with the smoke and debris from the ship everywhere, the large warrior was left unfulfilled.

Gerard moved his robot to Kor’digh and spoke softly, “Without the main reactor, the ship’s hover drive will fail in a matter of minutes. We’ve got to get out of here before she sinks.â€Â

Realizing his human companion was correct, Kor’digh pounded the railing. “Next time Li,†the warrior growled, “Next time.†Kor’digh brought his hands in front of him and summoned a glowing wave of yellow energy. The earth chi showered Kor’digh and the Gerard’s robot before it teleported them off the ship as it began slipping beneath the Pacific’s surface.

A few hundred meters away, Master Li floated unconscious just under the surface of the water.

*** Part Four ***

Even though much of the world embraced the rapid change and expanse of technology, some areas refused the mechanical intrusion. One such place was the small mountain town of Sedona, nestled between the red rocks in northern Arizona. Much of what had been developed in the early Twenty-first Century remained unchanged to this day and served as the beacon for those coming on holy pilgrimages to the numerous energy vortices that peppered the countryside. None of the many artists, musicians, or healers that called Sedona home could ever imagine living elsewhere and welcomed everyone into their community with open arms and friendly smile.

The midday sun crested above the canyon walls as Jayde Yee completed her ascent atop Bell Rock. The twenty-four year old Asian beauty strode to the bench mark, pausing to take in the awesome beauty of her surroundings. Momentarily catching her breath, Jayde wiped the sweat from her brow and viewed the sandstone formations. Magnificent cottonwoods and firs lined the banks of the river making its way through the canyon. Jayde shifted her weight onto one leg as she unscrewed the top to her canteen. Bringing the container to her lips, she embraced the cool water as it slid down her throat, quenching her thirst. Jayde had lived in Sedona most of her life, but she thought that today the red rocks of Sedona looked even more beautiful, as their special flecks danced in the summer light.

During the peak of summer, those visiting Sedona usually made their way inside. While the average temperature wasn’t too great, the higher altitude plagued those not used to being in it. Jayde was happy that this was the case, as she had Bell Rock all to herself. Her soft features and long, flowing black hair seemed at home at one of Sedona’s vortices. Setting down the small day pack she carried up with her, Jayde flicked her hair over her shoulder and out of her face. She unzipped the main compartment and retrieved a small blanket from inside. Carefully she spread out the blanket before her in a ritualistic manner, smoothing out each wrinkle until the fabric hugged the stone beneath it like a second skin. Jayde quietly removed her sandals and sat down cross-legged on the blanket with her hands lightly folded before her. She closed her eyes and quickly entered a deep state of meditation. As every fiber in her body relaxed, Jayde appeared as if she was completely at peace as a golden hue shone outward from her soul.

Two hours passed before Jayde chose to open her eyes. Her years of training could have allowed her to stay in this state for several more, but something told her it was time to end the meditation. The bright sun took a few minutes to get used to, but once her eyes became accustomed the bright light again, she quietly spoke into the wind, “Absolutely beautiful. I can’t imagine being anywhere else.â€Â

As content as Jayde had become during her meditation, she sensed that something wasn’t right. Normally after her meditations she felt refreshed and clear of mind. But today was different. Something was drawing her elsewhere. Jayde closed her eyes and listened to the faint call of the wind. “Where are you?†she thought as her mind honed in of the signal drawing her down to the creek.

After quickly packing her blanket, Jayde scaled down Bell Rock and ran down the nearby forest service road. Each step drew her closer to the source of the voice calling her away from town and into the forests of Sedona. Every second brought her closer to the source and built up the excitement in her. Jayde continued to race faster and faster, her feet pounding into the soft dirt until she came to the edge of a large meadow. Dotted with wild flowers, Jayde paused.

Sunlight pierced through the covering canopy, showering Jayde in soft light as she slowly walked into the meadow. She didn’t know what to expect, only that this place was calling to her. Each breath that filled her lungs sucked her deeper and deeper into the meadow as a strange new sensation began cascading over her body. Cautiously, Jayde slowed her advance.

The feeling intensified and electrified her body. Uncontrollably Jayde’s body began shaking from the enormous streams of energy racing through it. It was like nothing she had ever experienced before and more than her body could handle. Dropping to one knee, Jayde’s smooth skin pressed into the soft flora as her hands braced her fall. Her lungs began heaving when a bright flash of light drew her eyes to an open spot in the meadow before her. Trying to calm her frightened mind, Jayde noticed the abandoned area stirring.

Focusing her attention on the clearing, Jayde was able to put aside her fear and discomfort and clear her mind. Suddenly a small leaf broke through the soil. Its tender stem climbed upwards seeking light and warmth in the daylight. A sense of joy filled Jayde as the sensations left her body and she reached out to welcome the new sapling. Carefully she arced her tender fingers around the sapling opened her body to nature. As her chi bonded with the sapling, Jayde hoped that it would grow strong.

She thanked the tree for allowing her to be part its birth into world and prepared to make her way into town. Jayde stood up and brushed the dirt from her hands and knees and turned to leave the meadow. This had been a most memorable journey, but she needed to be getting to town. She worked at largest spa and as it was, she was going to be late, something her manager despised. As she turned around something caught her eye. A shimmering golden object reflecting the sun’s light flashed. “What?†she asked herself as she strained her eyes trying to make out the object. Knowing that time was short, Jayde jogged over to the nearby cottonwood and saw the source of the flickering light. Hung on a branch was a golden medallion.

Jayde’s eyes widened. She could not believe the beauty of such an amulet and that it was simply hanging here in the open. “Hello?†she yelled. “Is anyone out here? Hello?†There was no response. Jayde stepped closer to the medallion and studied it. It was solid gold with a simple chain attached to the object’s side. One face was smooth, but the other had markings Jayde never saw before - three curved lines at a forty-five degree angle rising towards the right. “It’s beautiful,†she said aloud.

Jayde stepped closer to the medallion as an image of Master Kahn appeared behind her. A smile flashed across his face when Jayde took hold of the Wood Medallion. Her elegant fingers wrapped around the golden chain and pulled it off the branches. As she held the medallion, a wave of Green Energy swirled around about her creating a cyclone. The trees and brush lashed about as the energy from the cyclone increased; however, in the center of the vortex all was calm and Jayde stood holding the medallion, oblivious as to what was occurring around her.

Closing her eyes, Jayde slipped the chain around her neck. The medallion came to rest over her heart and glowed green. The golden object channeled powerful wood chi into the young Asian and as Jayde took a deep breath; her body instantly became electrified with the green energy. The energy poured out from her pores and seeped into the surroundings. Jayde outstretched her arms, allowing the energy cyclone to wrap around her body and lift her into the air. Towering over the meadow, Jayde vanished in a brilliant flash of light.

Luís Mendoza sat behind the counter of his dusty cantina, nestled off in an old corner of Mexico City. Like most mid-day afternoons, the place was empty, but the truth of the matter was in fact, that the restaurant was empty most of the time. With the day long and hot, the Mexican National tried to fight off the boredom, but knew it was a losing battle. Letting out a deep sigh, Luís reached behind the old oak bar and retrieved a bottle of Patrón Reposado. He uncorked the small bottle and took in the sweet nectar and let the liquid fall into a small glass. Resting his body against the bar, he savored the tequila as it slipped past his lips and over his tongue. Luís massaged his neck, trying to relieve the stress of being inside all alone for another day, but decided it was no use. “Another slow day in paradise,†he mumbled, knocking the glass on the bar when he finished. “What am I doing here anymore?†he wondered.

For months, his customers dwindled. No longer did the tourists want an authentic atmosphere when visiting his home. They merely wanted to walk among the locals and gaze at the once grand pyramids. In the past week, only a few of his regulars even made it through the open doors and today it appeared if they wouldn’t even make it. Despite Mexico City being the capitol of Latin America, Luís knew that there would be little in the way of salvation for his small café. Businesses were geared to the large resorts and tourist destinations – his little storefront wouldn’t see one credit from the government to help him stay afloat. And who could blame them? In the blink of an eye, you could be half-way across the globe dining on fine cuisine. “Why would anyone settle for this little hole-in-the-wall?†he surmised. “Oh well,†Luís thought as he stared at the Coca-Cola clock on the wall. Even though it only read 12:32pm, he knew it might as well have read the same at night. Sliding the bottle and glass aside, the strong Mexican banged his head against the bar. His dark skin and trimmed brown hair smashed into the countertop repeatedly until every ounce of frustration had left his body.

“Screw,†Luís said with distinction, “this!†and put the Patrón behind the bar. “I’m just going to close this before I end up insane,†he uttered walking towards the front door. He smiled as his foot passed the loose floorboard and squeaked. Taking one last look around, Luís slid the “OPEN†sign in the window around to announce that his establishment was now “CLOSED.†Flicking his fingers against the wall, he shut off the bar’s lights and proceeded out the door.

Luís dove into his pockets searching for the keys to the locks, but stopped just short of actually pulling them out. “What use would it be?†he wondered. “It’s not like anyone is ever going to come here,†he thought with a chortle. Luís padded his hand on the door one last time. He knew this would be his final good-bye and that he’d never set foot here again. Turing around, he effortlessly sauntered down the barren street towards home, ready for something new.

One of the nice things, if they could be called that, on the outer fringes of Mexico City was that many of the old barrio homes were left unclaimed. Many flocked deep within the city as it was developed, but for Luís Mendoza and those like him, they relished in staying in more culturally attuned homes and communities. Not many remained here, but those that did formed a close nit extended family. It also allowed Luís to live only a few minutes from his café.

The walk home went quickly and before he realized it, Luís had arrived at his modest abode. The small block house wasn’t anything special and looks as if to be barely able to support its own weight. As Luís’ footsteps crossed over the threshold of his home, the trail of dust carried into the air. He never locked his doors, since he was too poor to own anything of worth. His footsteps echoed against the adobe walls as he made his way through the living room. Luís took off his shirt and threw it on the counter in the kitchen, revealing a well defined and muscular body.

Exiting his house through the rotting back door, Luís stepped out onto his rear porch. A beat-up punching bag wrapped in duct tape was anchored into the ceiling’s beams and hung from rusted chains. To his right was an old white refrigerator that rattled when the cooling system ran. Luís opened the door and took out a cold Dos Equis. The glass bottle quickly frosted over in the humidity as he popped of the top. He threw the lid into the nearby trash can and took a long sip. Sighing as he slammed the frothy bottle on top of the fridge, Luís readied himself for an afternoon workout.

He walked up to the bag and measured out an arm length’s distance. He drew his right leg back slightly and dropped into a fighting stance before unloading his first powerful blow against the bag. His force rose up from the dirt covered floor, through his legs and hips, into his torso, and out through his fist. The blow jolted the bag backwards and sent a fine layer of dust shooting off its surface. He quickly danced around the bag, unloading more punches. Sweat poured from his brow as he began unloading all his frustrations into the bag. With each punch, his problems seemed to get farther and farther away – no more worries about the city, the state of the world, or the restaurant. This is where he felt at home- alone with the bag– punch – punch – jab – punch – sidestep – jab – and so it went on for hours.

***

The floor around the bag was soaked in sweat and dirt from Luís’ efforts with the bag. His arms and legs felt as if they were wobbly sticks extending from his body. It had been some time since Luís had worked out this hard and his body relished the experience. He finally stopped punching the bag, grabbing on to it, using it to hoist him upright. His lungs burned for more air and he gasped each breath trying to fill his body. Luís’ ears thumped with his racing heartbeat and his eyes drew foggy as beads of sweat blurred his vision.

His body wound down and returned to a somewhat normal state when he heard muffled screams coming from the alley behind the house. Normally his neighborhood was quiet this time of day, so the noise certainly peaked his curiosity peaked. Taking one last sip from the warm beer on the fridge, she stepped out into yard to investigate. Filled with dirt and weeds, Luís’ yard was not something to be proud of. He reached the chain linked fence marking the edge of his property and saw nothing. He looked around the left side of the alley and then the right. “I know I’m not imagining things,†he thought, but found nothing to accompany the sounds he heard. As Luís turned around, another scream bellowed toward him from the neighbor’s yard.

Concerned, Luís ran across the alley and hopped the chain-linked fence surrounding the yard. When he cleared the fence, Luís came upon the source of the yelling and disgust flowed through him. Rage instantly filled the humble man as he took off running towards three teenage boys that were holding down a young school girl. The boys had pulled her skirt off and were preparing to rape the child when she managed to let out a final plea for help. As he neared the boys, Luís was glad that he listened to his inner voice and closed the café today. Who knows what would have happened if he wasn’t here.

Even though his body was fatigued by countless hours of punching the bag, Luís Mendoza moved with the agility of someone well-rested. His lightening fast feet surprised the boys, who barely managed to glance at the burly man racing towards them. The youngest of the three boys instantly shot upright and took off running. Luís knew he wouldn’t be able to catch him, but the other two were an entirely different story.

The boys were dumbfounded and as the hulking man flew down in a fit of rage. Luís channeled all his failures, all his anger, and all his sense of justice into punishing the boys for harming an innocent girl. Luís picked up the first boy with his left hand and swung as hard as he could with his right. The impact rocked the young man’s jaw and sent two teeth and stream of blood pouring from his mouth as the force knocked him to the ground and the wind out of him.

The second boy scurried to the side and picked up a 2x4 and held it like a bat. Luís could see the boy breathing hard, trying to put fear behind him. It was no use, for Luís could see the young man’s legs shaking uncontrollably. Luís turned to stare at the child and calmly said, “I dare you,†devoid of fear. The teen knew he was outmatched and dropped the wooden board and took off running.

The young woman looked up at Luís as she pulled her skirt over her bare body. Knowing that the ordeal was finally behind her, she finally broke down and started crying. Luís knelt down beside the young lady, but made sure to keep some distance. “Are you all right?†he asked, not knowing if he’d be able to get a reply through all the crying. “It’s okay little one,†he said pulling out his Com-link. “I’m going to call the police and make sure you’re all right,†he assured her.

***

An hour later, the girl’s family and the Police finally left Luís alone. It had been a long day, both physically and emotionally for him. The thought that someone could do that to another human being tore at Luís’ conscious. It was simply too appalling to contemplate and he fought the urge to vomit. From the corner of his eye, Luís spied the punching bag and decided the only way to get rid of these feelings was to pound them out.

As he neared the bag something caught his eye. It was something he’d never seen before - a golden medallion hanging off the chrome chain. “What the…†he muttered. “I told them I didn’t want anything,†he continued, thinking that the parents of the young girl gave him a small reward. He stepped closer to the golden amulet and took it ever-so-gently in his hands. The markings on the front face were something he’d never seen before, three “^†resting on top of one another.

Luís brought the Earth Medallion closer to his face and a yellow energy vortex began swirling around him. Luís struggled to figure out what was happening as the powerful energy swarmed. Nothing in his life remotely prepared him for this and without thinking, Luís slid the medallion over his head and let it come to rest on his chest. Master Yee looked on with approval when Luís’ body began glowing bright yellow. A few seconds later, Luís screamed as his body vanished in a bright yellow flash.

On the other side of the world, Leslie Chen and her brother, Michael, enjoyed a quiet evening in their small apartment. Located in the heart of Beiging, the pair had lived together most of their lives, only separated when Michael left for college. Now that each had obtained their professional degrees, they found living together a breath of fresh air after suffering through various roommates. Because of its stature on the world stage, Beiging also had limited space for its residents. Most families continued to live in the same household with few able to afford, or even locate, private homes.

Leslie was petite and had recently bobbed her hair. Her almond complexion, dark hair, and eyes made her look more like a schoolgirl than a professor at Beiging University, something her fellow faculty members teased her about, but that she used to her advantage. In every sense of the word, Leslie was stunning. Both men and boys at the campus pursued her romantically, although she had little interest in them. Deep down in her soul she knew that her time at the University was limited and that she would have the most fruitful years of her career elsewhere. This logic created Leslie’s intense distaste for modern dating – something her brother relished with open arms.

“You know, the more you watch, the more brain cells you lose, Michael,†she teased her brother as he sat on the sofa, eyes glued to the holographic projector. Like always, it was showing one of the many sports events taking pace on the planet. Michael had so many interests, that Leslie no longer even tried to keep up with them or who he was even rooting for. All that mattered to her was that they were sharing the same space.

Michael grinned sarcastically and turned to look at her squarely in the eyes. With a gleam that reminded Leslie of a young boy he quipped, “I don’t see you coming up with any alternatives.†As someone who was four years Leslie’s senior, Michael still behaved as if he were in his adolescence. His rugged body and vast knowledge got him far in life, but never far enough with his younger sister. “I wish she’d just give it a rest,†he thought to himself, trying to put her out of his mind and concentrate on the game.

A moment or two passed before his conscious got the better of him and he took his right hand and tapped it on his sister’s thigh, “Sorry sis. I didn’t mean to snap at you. All these budget cuts at the hospital are starting to get to me. It’s really going to start jeopardizing patient care soon. I just need something to help me unwind.â€Â

Leslie leaned over and curled up with her brother. “See? This is why you should come teach at the University. Better hours, less frustration, and no worries about patient care,†she said. Leslie placed her head on Michael’s shoulder. She could feel his strong body beneath his shirt and his heart beat echoed in her years. Squeezing him tightly she added, “I really wish you would. You’re working so many shifts now, it’s like you’re not even here.â€Â

Michael leaned over and placed his head atop his sister’s, “I know. It’ll only be a few more months before this rotation’s complete. After that, I should have a better schedule.†Michael paused as the program broke for commercial and shifted his weight. “Do you want anything while I’m up?†he asked while he stood.

“No thank you,†Leslie said as her brother walked into the kitchenette. As she watched Michael walk away in his t-shirt and boxers, she saw that he’s wearing an old pair their mother gave him… the one with the hole in the right cheek. Seeing this, she sat up and threw a pillow at him. “I can’t believe you’re wearing that!†she yelled as the pillow hit him in the back.

“What?†Michael said innocently, shrugging his shoulders as he witnessed his cheek protruding through the shorts.

“You know what,†Leslie joked, “That’s disgusting. Mom would kill you if she saw you waking around in that.â€Â

“Yeah,†Michael replied as he swayed his shoulders side to side, “but she’s not here.†A smile erupted on his face, pleased that, at least in this house, he could wear what he wanted.

Finished with his sister, Michael took a glass out of the cupboard and filled it with water. “Are you sure you don’t want anything?†he asked again.

From the other room, his sister confirmed, “Really. I’m fine.â€Â

“Okay,†Michael said and returned to the couch just in time for the match to resume on the holographic display.

The pair settled into the couch to watch the game, when they head a rumbling sound outside. The noise was quickly followed by several loud screams below their apartment. Their interests peaked; the siblings rose from the couch and went to the window. Pulling back the drapes, they looked down into the alley and found the source of the chaos.

What they saw troubled them - a hover car flipped onto its side and crashed into the building. Debris was everywhere. “Call Emergency Services, I’m going down,†Michael yelled as he raced to his bedroom to put on some pants and shoes.

“I will, she said as she saw her brother ready to go. “Be careful,†Leslie warned as her brother ran out of the apartment.

It only took a few minutes for Michael to race down the steps from their apartment and make it onto the street. Michael saw a woman in her early sixties screaming and rushed over to her. As he treated her, he could tell that she was pretty badly shaken up, but thankfully nothing too serious – no broken bones, no bleeding wounds – she was stunned and not talking. The woman’s gaze focused on the car. Michael guided the elderly woman down against the building, hoping this would prevent her from falling and really injuring her. Once on the concrete, Michael tried to get her to talk, “Can you tell me your name?â€Â

The woman tried to respond, but the words fail to reach freedom, it’s as if they just sat in her mouth readied to be freed, if only they could. With enormous concentration, the woman was able to raise her arm and point to the car.

“I know. You were in an accident,†he replied as he continued to assess the woman.

Running out of their building, Leslie joined her brother. “They’re on their way. It should only be a couple of minutes,†she said as the roar of the Emergency Service Vehicles from the nearby station filled the air.

“Ba…â€Â, the woman tried to say. “Bab..,†she said again pointed to the car.

Both Michael and Leslie looked at the car and began to hear a faint cry. Sheer horror came over their faces as they realized what the woman was trying to tell them: baby.

“No!†Leslie screamed as she took off running towards the car.

Her brother tried restraining her when he noticed that the vehicle’s fuel cells started leaking. The broken system released plasma onto the car’s frame and immediately ignited the soft metal, sending a powerful fireball high into the night’s sky. Filled with purpose and a new sense of power, Leslie broke free of her brother and raced to the car.

She quickly reached the wrecked car and began searching the back seat for the child. A second later, Michael joined her. “We’ve got to get out of here, this thing’s going to blow,†he nervously said.

“I’m not leaving the baby!†Leslie screamed frantically.

They both completed their search of the car, but found nothing. “Where is the crying coming from?†Leslie wondered as she popped her head up. As each second passed the flames grew larger and covered more of the car. Bright trails of light broke through the flame retardant barriers and entered the rear passenger compartment.

“I don’t know!†Michael screamed looking around. As his eyes darted about, they finally caught something a few meters to his left – the car seat “Over there!†he shouted and pointed to his discovery. He ran towards the car seat to make sure the baby was safe.

Leslie began to leave the car, but her attention was drawn to a shimmering golden object on the front seat. As she reached for the object, the car exploded in a horrendous firestorm. The flames rode up in the night’s sky, leaving blackened marks on the building and alley. The Emergency Service Vehicles rounded the final corner and slowly made their way through the small crowd that had gather as Michael’s eyes swelled with tears. Holding the child in his hands he cried out, “Leslie!â€Â

Inside the molten core of Mt. Fuji was one of the remaining Mystic Doors. In this vaulted chamber, a lone island carved from the mountain sat nested in a river of lava. Two narrow bridges led inwards from the surrounding ledges that encompassed the fiery lake. As magma passed under the bridge, it slowly eroded the crossing so that in another few thousand years the arch will finally succumb to the forces of nature.

A bright flash of light filled the chamber. After it subsided, Kor’digh and the robot appeared next to the Mystic Door. The pair walked around the small island, inspecting the ancient artifact. “The only way to travel,†Gerard said through his avatar, sure that they had arrived at the pre-determined location.

Kor’digh grunted an approval. “I should have been able to end this back there. He will cause problems for my Lord,†he barked.

Gerard thought for a moment before continuing, “He’s in a bad spot. The water won’t help. He’ll have to catch a break even to make it out of that,†he said as the robot stumbled walking to position directly in front of the Fire Mystic Door.

“Never underestimate him. He and the others will surprise you,†rumbled Kor’digh.

Gerard shook his head. “Foolish thug. If these Defenders were so dangerous, then why was only one of them so easily dealt with? The robot may not have been able to do much. But this guy was more than a match him,†he thought.

“Shall we?†Gerard asked through the avatar.

“Get on with it,†Kor’digh replied.

The robot stood firm and raised its arms. Power siphoned from its main capacitor and was channeled into the robot’s arms. Unleashing a powerful stream of energy at the door, the beams found the center and began energizing the fire lock. Within seconds, the symbol began glowing red. Flashes of light radiated outwards from the door’s center as the stone cap began cracking under the power. As the light filled the cavern, red energy moved outwards from the symbol and consumed the rock portal.

“I still can’t believe that it works,†Kor’digh said dumfounded.

In France, Gerard smiled widely, pushing deeper into his chair. “God, I’m glad that’s over with,†he thought.

The red energy created a massive vortex within the door, discharging bolts of electricity around both onlookers. Now fully charged, the pure energy transformed itself into the essence of fire and energized the Mystic Door, revealing a dimensional portal to the Shadow Realm. Waiting on the other side was Qual’och. Seeing that the portal was open, the wizard cautiously stepped through the gateway. Instantaneously he was transported to Earth. Qual’och placed his hind foot on the rocky ground beneath him and turned to look behind. “Free after all these years,†he quietly said under his breath and twisted his body forward and folded his arms behind him. “Let’s move on to the next door,†he announced.

Kor’digh bowed, signaling his readiness.

“That will have to wait,†Gerard said through his robot.

The comment caught Kor’digh off guard and he jerked his head towards the robot. Fighting back the urge to pulverize the mechanical contraptions master, the warrior waited to take his lead from the wizard, so as not to overstep his bounds.

Anger flashed before the wizard’s face and his eyes went from dark to a powerful red glow. “Explain yourself!†he demanded.

Gerard squirmed in his seat. “Maybe I over played my hand,†he thought.

“I’ve been jacked into this machine for too long. Staying linked in and firing the energy blasts is exhausting. As it stands now, I can barely control the robot’s motor functions. There’s no way I can fire another discharge without some rest. I need to unplug and get some sleep,†he said matter-of-factly. While the statement couldn’t have come at a more inopportune time, it was the truth. Gerard knew that if he stayed jacked in more than he already was, his brain would be fried and his goals of conquest would be lost.

Qual’och glared at Kor’digh and telepathically implanted a message, “We will grant him this one request. We need him,†he paused, “for now. But as soon as the other doors are opened, we will remove this insignificant pool of matter from our ranks.â€Â

Kor’digh’s eyes lit up with extreme desire as his glistening white teeth pierced through his reptilian lips.

The gemstones in the Great Vault had dimmed since Master Li left their presence, barely casting any light on the remains of the five sacred tombs. In this quiet place, three swirling energy spheres materialized in front of the wood, earth, and fire caskets. Each was a unique color reflecting their origin: green for wood, yellow for earth, and red for fire. The spheres started out small, about the size of a golf ball, but quickly grew to the size of a small tree in a matter of seconds. As they grew, each shot tremendous streams of thundering energy bolt into the Great Vault. The discharged energy clashed against the cavern’s walls, sending sparks shimmering down to the cavern floor.

In unison, the three spheres of energy exploded, filling the room with bright multicolored light. When the energy had abated, Jayde Yee, Luís Mendoza, and Leslie Chen stood before the tombs representing their element. They no longer wore what clothes they had when each took hold of the golden medallions. Now they wore a black gi with striped at the cuff and boot tops, revealing their element’s color. Like Master Li, they also wore a golden belt around their waist with the medallion securely fastened into the buckle.

Leslie’s eyes were fixed wide with her face full of terror as she realized she no longer was in facing an exploding car. “Michael!†she yelled, still not realizing that others were present or that she had been teleported away from home.

Luís stood dumbfounded, not quite sure what to make out of his experience. He slowly looked around, darting his eyes around the Great Vault, trying not to move.

Jayde was the first of the three to step forward. Having just come out of the teleport, her footing was off, but she managed to catch herself before falling to the cavern’s floor. “I’ve never experienced anything like that,†she said aloud, her voice echoing up to the chamber’s ceiling.

Luís groggily stepped forward. “What just happened?†he managed to get out with his hands flailing about. “I mean, am I imagining all of this?†he wondered.

Leslie turned to the others and calmly stated, “No.†A new sense of confidence came over her as she looked at her new comrades. Something deep within her knew something had changed and that this was right. She knew down in her core that what had just happened was for the greater good.

Jayde and Luís slowly remembered their own experiences with the Masters. First Jayde, and then Luís, realized that they have been endowed with tremendous power to be used as they wish.

“Please tell me if I’m crazy. But do either of you remember some old man telling you you’re now a warrior?†Luís questioned.

Jayde and Leslie stared at one another and then smiled at Luís. Jayde walked over to her new friend and put her hand on his shoulder. “Yes I do. I’m Jayde Yee, warrior of wood.â€Â

Relief flooded Luís. He closed his eyes and gave and audible sigh. “Thank… you… Lord! I thought I was going crazy.â€Â

Leslie smiled and introduced herself, Ãâ„¢m Leslie Chen, the fire warrior.â€Â

The three newcomers shook hands. “Luís Mendoza,†he offered, “Earth.†An awkward silence fell upon the group as they looked around in silence. “So what now?†Luís asked, hunching his shoulders.

Jayde shrugged, “Dunno.â€Â

Leslie suddenly realized the implications of her being in the Great Vault. The last time she was with someone, they saw her engulfed in flames by an exploding care. Nothing in her life was more important that her brother. Ever since their parents died, she made a point to stay close with him. “I’ve got to tell my brother I’m all right,†Leslie fretted as she began walking towards the hallway leading out of the chamber.

“I’m sure he knows you are,†Luís said while running up next to Leslie with Jayde quickly following.

“No he doesn’t. I took the medallion while a car was exploding. Hell, I even thought I was dead. I’ve got to let him know,†Leslie asserted.

Luís mouthed, “Wow,†unaware of the circumstances of Leslie’s recruitment.

“Not to change the subject, or anything. But didn’t you get the impression we were to meet someone here?†Jayde asked before the trio left the Great Vault.

Not faltering from her goal of finding a way to call her brother, Leslie took off down the hallway leading out from the Great Vault. “Maybe he’s this way,†Leslie replied as her voice trailed down the corridor.

Adrift in the Pacific, Master Li slowly regained his consciousness. The battered warrior bobbed in the ocean and tried not to swallow the salty water – a fight he was loosing. Each swell poured more water down his throat, forcing him to cough more and more. Every ounce of strength Master Li possessed was driving his arms and legs in an effort to keep him afloat and free from death. He strained looking over the horizon, hoping to get some idea of how he’d be able to survive in this weakened state. “I’ve got to get back… got to stop them. I…†Before Master Li could finish his last thought, his wounds caught up with him and he drifted off into unconsciousness again.

Master Li’s limp body fell under the surface on a one way trip to the ocean bottom. It would have sunk quickly to the black abyss below if it weren’t for a pair of dolphins that came to his rescue. The pair slid up against the ancient warrior and gently nudged him towards the surface. Still unconscious, the dolphins swam with the fallen warrior on their backs.

I'll be taking a break next weekend from posting (4th of July holiday). Part Five will be posted in two weeks.

*** Part Five ***

Gerard’s fatigued body slumped quietly in his chair. The strain from the countless hours of being connected to his metal machine clearly showed on the weakened man. Barely able to keep his eyes open, Gerard was awestruck by the materialization of Qual’och, Kor’digh, and his robot when they appeared in the foyer of his country estate. Rather, a sense of relief came over him, as he reached to the jack between the C-Net and his brain and severed the connection. The instant his thoughts left the robot, the enormous metallic beast became immobilized and stood silent like an iron statue. Once free of the binding to the machine, Gerard forced his body out of the chair he’d been restricted to for these past hours. The simple activity of just getting up was agony for the Frenchman, as he had become accustomed to use the machine’s “muscles†rather than his own.

Kor’digh grunted as he walked slowly around the machine that had accompanied him across the globe and allowed him to once more set foot on this planet. Seeing such a machine stand silent unsettled the warrior who decided it best to keep a moderate distance. Qual’och put aside any feelings he had whatsoever and effortlessly sauntered towards their host. The delay they were being subjected to was needlessly placing his mission in danger of being discovered by the Defenders and failing to complete it was something he was going to avoid at all costs.

Gerard closed his eyes for a moment, trying to shake off the latent images from the C-Net link in an attempt to stop the room from spinning. Even though he knew he was only living in “real space,†his mind was still having difficulties distinguishing between the real objects in the foyer and the countless streams of data it had just completed processing. As his eyes adjusted, he finally paused to stare at his new compatriots in person. It was the first time he’d ever met true aliens and couldn’t help thinking to himself, “Objects in mirrors…†since his initial suspicions that Kor’digh was significantly larger than he appeared in person. Summoning all his remaining strength, Gerard forced himself to place one foot before the other. It was almost like learning to walk again. The extended link to the C-Net already had begun the process of disassociating the motor nerves from the rest of his consciousness. In fact, if Gerard had stayed jacked in too much longer, the link would have prevented him from ever returning to anything resembling a “normal life.â€Â

“Three hours,†Gerard pleaded, his voice creaking. “Give me three hours and I’ll be ready to go. I’ve got to get some rest or else I won’t be able to pilot, the uh…†Gerard’s mind faded as he searched for the rest of his thought, “the robot.†He hoped his guests could see that the request was genuine, for it was. Gerard had no intention of failing to live up to his responsibilities to Bruch’oda, but with his diminished capabilities, he was of no use.

“As you wish,†Qual’och hissed, pressing his claws together. The wizard’s eyes narrowed and sent an uneasy message to his host.

Gerard managed to muster an uneasy smile, knowing that he was treading on thin ice. “Jeffery!†he called. It wasn’t long before the distant sound of his servant’s electric motor foretold his arrival. The robotic servant stopped next to his master and Gerard put his arm around the robot and instructed it, “What ever they need, give it to them. I’ll be in my room sleeping.â€Â

“Yes, Master,†the robot replied.

“Good,†Gerard said, patting Jeffery on the back. He then lethargically made his way down the hall, barely able to stand.

Once Gerard was out of earshot, Kor’digh leaned next to Qual’och and sternly said under his breath, “A nursemaid.†Seeing that Jeffery was approaching them, Qual’och motioned that neither he nor his companion was in need of any assistance. Jeffery flashed a quick sign of acknowledgement and noticed that dust and debris was still present on the newly transformed robot. Rolling over to the machine, the mechanical servant began cleaning its counterpart.

Qual’och watched the way Jeffery meticulously cleaned the robot Gerard had been using. Acting without pause, the machine subserviently followed orders and performed without hesitation. “This could be useful,†the wizard thought and after twenty minutes had passed, Qual’och was certain he had discovered a way to reach his objective.

Secretly motioning to Kor’digh to remain where he stood, Qual’och walked towards Jeffery. The robot sensed the wizard’s approach and stopped cleaning. Rotating its torso to face his guest Jeffery inquisitively asked, “Is there any way I can assist you?â€Â

Qual’och looked at the machine quietly. Tucking his arms behind himself, the wizard wondered aloud, “What is your role here?â€Â

“I serve,†Jeffery replied.

“I see,†Qual’och quietly said, “Without question?â€Â

“Yes.â€Â

“Good,†Qual’och sinisterly smirked. “How is it that you function without a human host?†the wizard asked, beginning to formulate his plan.

“In the strictest of terms we do have a ‘host’ as it were,†Jeffery answered.

“Explain,†Qual’och commanded.

“Most of the robot servants have a moderately complex artificial intelligence routine embedded into their circuitry. This enables them to function within their design specifications and respond to instructions given by myself and the Master.â€Â

“But you’re different?†Qual’och assumed.

“Yes,†Jeffery answered. “It was part of the Master’s research several project years ago. Using cloned tissue, Master was able to successfully integrate human cerebral tissue with standard artificial intelligence programming. The result was a machine capable of human thought. In short, I have a brain and control myself.â€Â

The wizard smiled, “Excellent.â€Â

“I suppose one could say that,†Jeffery replied, not fully understanding Qual’och’s response; however, even at his distance, Kor’digh was fully aware of what the wizard intended.

Beneath his cloak, Qual’och formed the sacred mudra for mind control and smiled. “This will be entirely too easy,†he thought.

Gerard’s make-shift bedroom wasn’t far from the foyer. Something at the time he was grateful for, because he doubted he could have made it to the master suite on the other side of the estate. He did this for two reasons, primarily because most of his work kept him jacked into the C-Net all day and making the long walk back to his suite was unnecessary – he simply needed rest. The other reason was that he was alone. Aside from his robotic companions, Gerard hadn’t been in contact with a human being for years. The reputation made him an enigmatic recluse to those in the area, but he didn’t care. Finding the lost Mystic Doors has been his life’s work and he was pleased it was a successful endeavor.

While he slumbered, the bedroom door slowly opened, revealing Gerard sprawled out on a disheveled bed, drool seeping from the corner of his mouth. A soft electronic hum was heard drowning out the ambient noise and stirred the once sleeping Frenchman. With his eyes half-closed, Gerard rolled over and wiped the drool from his chin. Using one hand to prop himself up and the other to clear the sleep from his eyes, Gerard’s mind slowly returned to the present. Unsure of what he was seeing, Gerard rubbed his eyes again. This time the image was clearer, but still puzzling. Standing in the open doorway was a robot he’d never seen before. Its design was similar to the robot he’d been piloting, down to the large X on its chest, but it was somehow different. Then it dawned on him. “No,†Gerard quietly mouthed to himself as the large robot took one step forward.

“Yes,†a familiar voice rang from the robot as it continued to close the distance.

Horror filled Gerard’s mind as he tried to wrap his thoughts around what had happened. Somehow Qual’och had turned Jeffery against him and gave him all the powers of his robotic avatar. “If that’s the case,†Gerard thought, “then there’s no need for me!†The sudden realization brought sweat pouring from his forehead as Jeffery inched closer.

The massive machine continued its slow advance and raised its twin arms. Pausing for only a moment, the machine commanded white bands of energy to whisk around its power emitters. Knowing full well what was about to happened, Gerard’s eyes shot wide open. “Please don’t!†he screamed – but his call for help fell upon deft ears. No one could save him. Gerard pushed back with his legs and pressed his body up against the bedroom wall, bracing for the inevitable. With no hope, he started to cry.

***

Gerard’s blood curdling screams echoed down the foyer’s hallway to the eagerly awaiting ears of Qual’och and Kor’digh. Qual’och smile grew and revealed his piercing fangs that curled back along his jaw. Kor’digh relaxed his shoulders as the smell of death floated towards him. “How fitting he should die from at the hand of one of his creations,†Kor’digh surmised. Qual’och turned to his compatriot and nodded.

“With Jeffery serving the Master, there will be no delays,†Qual’och asserted, “We’ll have the remaining Mystic Doors open before long and the Earth will succumb to Bruch’oda’s rule once more.â€Â

When Master Li regained consciousness, he had no idea how long he’d been unconscious. The His years of training allowed him to usually master the passage of time, but today’s battle took much from him and forces all his attention on healing his wounds. Master Li’s senses told him he was still in water and a moment later he knew the reason he hadn’t sunk to the bottom of the ocean was due to the generosity imparted to him from the dolphins that supported his body. In this weakened state, he couldn’t muster the words of thanks due his saviors, but mentally sent his gratitude.

The dolphins slowly came to a stop and bobbed up and down, floating easily in the sea’s swells. Master Li’s mind raced to try and figure out what his companions were doing, but it soon became apparent - he wasn’t the only one in the ocean that knew the intricate nature of energy and the way each element wove together. The ancestors of the dolphins pre-dated man and came to understand this system long before man took his first step. The dolphins had paused at this particular spot because they had called upon a floating mass of algae. As the single-celled creatures came closer, Master Li felt a feeling of warmth wash over him like a soft spring shower. The natural wood chi from the algae fed his body and rekindled his fire. In this energetic circle, the earth of the sea bottom, fed the minerals in the water that in turn supported the algae that would enable Master Li to regain his health.

***

Refueling Master Li’s inner fire took hours. The slow process of absorbing wood chi from the algae allowed the last original Defender to replay the battle in his mind. Dueling with Kor’digh, as he had done many years ago, drilled home the fact that this time Bruch’oda was determined to achieve a different outcome and assume control of Earth. Master Li realized his abilities would be stretched to their limit, not only on the field of battle, but in mentoring his comrades’ replacements.

As his body ignited the wood chi, Master Li’s wounds slowly healed. The blood that had once flowed freely ceased and the lacerations were now scabbed over and started to subside. With each breath Master Li felt better and even more resolved to save the Earth. When the sun finally set over the distant horizon, he released his grip on the noble dolphins that had saved his life and slipped into the ocean. Humbly, Master Li said, “Thank you. I owe you my life.†His watery companions clicked in acknowledgement and swam a few meters away. Taking deep breath, Master Li fell beneath the ocean’s surface. Closing his eyes he concentrated and brought his hands together. From deep within, his fire burned once more and consumed his body. The explosive release of energy teleported him out of the Pacific in a blinding red flash.

Luís, Jayde, and Leslie stood outside the Great Vault, returning from their walk down the cavern’s entryway. “I think this is starting to make sense,†Jayde said. “Reading the hieroglyphics makes things a whole lot clearer.†The fact she was making the comment somewhat surprised her, for if she wasn’t living the events herself, she would’ve had a hard time believing them -and to a small extent, she still was.

The trio continued walking into the Great Vault but stopped halfway down the main staircase. The once vacant chamber was no more. Standing in its center was Master Li. His gi torn and body battered, the ancient warrior bowed and gazed up at his new allies. Speaking softly, the sage voiced, “I apologize for not being here when you arrived.â€Â

Jayde, Leslie, and Luís froze for a moment, when they heard Master Li speak. Each was stunned that they had finally met someone who could answer their questions. Leslie was the first to shake off the shock and took off running down the rest of the stairs. Luís and Jayde quickly followed their new friend, all with their minds aflutter with questions. When the three newest Defenders came before him, Master Li thought, “So young, so innocent. It seems like a lifetime ago I stood in their place.â€Â

Even thought the distance from the staircase the Great Vault’s tombs was a few hundred meters, Leslie found herself short of breath from the high altitude. Pausing to catch her breath, Leslie stared at Master Li and cautiously asked, “Master Li?â€Â

“Yes,†Master Li responded. “I see that my friends have chosen well,†he added with a smile.

Luís was still confused and stepped back to reserve judgment. Even though he witnessed incredible events by his own senses, he simply wasn’t used to things moving so quickly or at this magnitude. “I wish I was home,†he thought. His life was simple and his mind couldn’t quite process what was happening. Placing his hands on his hips, the Mexican shook his head, “Can you please explain to me what’s going on? Why are we here?â€Â

Master Li smiled again and motioned for his young friends to follow him. Nestled in a remote corner were the remains of an old granite throne, carved from the very chamber they stood within. The eons had eroded much of the grand etchings away, but the old sage still remembered the day he and his comrades completed its construction. Resting his bones in the seat, Master
Li signaled to the others to rest on the cavern’s floor. Master Li took a long breath before speaking, trying to find the best words to describe the situation that had manifested. “Five thousand years ago, an evil warlord named Bruch’oda threatened the Earth. Along with my friends, we managed to banish him to the Shadow Realm.â€Â

“We saw the drawings,†Jayde said pointing to the passageway above her, “on the walls.â€Â

Master Li nodded, “Very observant. Then you know part of the story and deep in your hearts you know the rest. For the universe maintains a delicate balance. The Chinese describe this as yin and yang. While the great evil had been removed from Earth, it could not be done so forever, balance must be achieved. Each of us knew that one day the doors sealing those imprisoned would be unlocked.†Master Li looked at each of the tombs and paused. “The six of us stood watch, but time as passed, slowly each of my friends made the journey onto the next realm.†Master Li looked at the children before him. “I, alone, chose to remain here so when evil returned, Earth would have a fighting chance. My comrades have chosen each of you to be their successor and bear the mantle of responsibility as Earth’s guardians.â€Â

“I just can’t believe all this,†Luís stammered. “How can you be five thousand years old? No one can live that long even with all the technology we’ve got!â€Â

“I know it’s hard to believe, but can you come up with another explanation of how we arrived here?†Jayde asked. “Look around you. You know it’s all true.â€Â

Luís’ face went blank as his thoughts churned inside. As fantastic as the story seemed, he could no longer separate the fantasy from reality. Luís Mendoza had no choice but to accept the mantle of responsibility that had been bestowed upon, the humbled man looked for guidance.

“Search your heart for the answer, Luís,†Master Li quietly spoke in the Great Vault. “Your caring and compassionate nature is why Master Yee chose you to wield the power of Earth in the battle we now face.â€Â

“What do you mean?†questioned Leslie.

“As I said before, the universe exists in a delicate balance of yin and yang. Good and justice cannot exist without evil and chaos. When the Mystic Doors were sealed, we artificially skewed the balance in our favor, for a time. We secretly hoped that no man would venture to open the doors, for doing so would unleash an unimaginable wave of horror over the planet and cast Earth into another battle for its very survival. But we all knew that was little more than wishful thinking. The doors would be opened and unfortunately, the day has arrived. Two Mystic Doors have been opened thus far. I waited as long as I could for you in this chamber, but once the first warrior came through, I had to try and stop their progress.â€Â

“Is that how you got hurt,†Jayde asked.

“Yes,†Master Li answered. “I was unsuccessful in my effort. To make matters worse, Bruch’oda has enlisted the assistance of modern technology and created a robot that can multiply itself. There were simply too many. I fear that we’ve lost the upper hand and the remaining three doors will be opened before we can stop them.â€Â

“What will happen then?†Luís asked through a dumbfounded look.

“Each Mystic Door serves as a lock between Earth and the Shadow Realm. When a door is opened, only one person can transition between worlds. When all five doors are opened, then Bruch’oda can unite the two and bring all his forces back to Earth. In order to be successful, we must seal the doors again.â€Â

“Why can’t we just go and close the doors now?†Jayde wondered.

“The doors are tied to the five elements of nature and only the power of the door’s element can lock it. While you,†Master Li pointed to Leslie, “possess the ability to seal the Fire Mystic Door, we do not possess the ability to seal the Water Mystic Door.â€Â

Luís took a deep breath, building upon the strength and courage he exhibited earlier and said, “Well, we’ve got fire, wood, and earth,†pointing to Leslie, Jayde, and himself in turn. “The way I see it we may be two people short, but I’m sure there’s something we can do,†he asserted.

Master Li smiled at Luís, “It will be dangerous, but if you are up to the challenge, then we can attempt to try and stop the final three doors from being opened.â€Â

Leslie and Jayde looked at Luís and nodded in agreement. Pulling herself up to her feet, Leslie approached Master Li, “Tell us what you need us to do.â€Â

“Two hours. It has never taken this long to sift through hacked codes before,†Abeu Basbakar thought. Linked directly into the C-Net, the young man tried to find the hidden secrets he so desperately needed in a small apartment near downtown Toronto. “I know you’re here somewhere,†the seventeen yea old native from India told himself. Even though he knew time was of the essence, it was this part of the missions he always enjoyed the most – the part where everything came down a single make-or-break situation – and he was always the key. Success or failure would fall on his shoulders – and he never failed. No matter what was going on around him, Abeu focused all his energies into solving the “riddle†at hand and ignored everyone around him.

Seth Goldman, an older man with red hair, placed a gentle hand on Abeu’s shoulder. “Time’s running out. Can you do it?†he asked.

Abeu clinched his fists and ripped out the plug tied into his data port. The quick action caught the attention of the dozen or NASO Security Troops standing nearby. “108 East McClendon. Apartment 220,†the youngster cried out.

Seth tapped Abeu on the shoulder and flashed a big smile, “Great work. Great work, Abeu.â€Â

Robert Dwyer, the task force’s commander, nodded a quiet, “Thanks.†Walking to the center of the room, the African-American was joined Dr. Gary Staal. “Okay, listen up. Gary and I’ll enter first. Once we secure the apartment, you’ll receive the all clear signal to remove the prisoners,†Robert ordered.

The NASO Security Troops nodded. Standing up from his reclined position on the sofa, Sergeant Quann replied, “We’ll be there sir.â€Â

Robert patted Quann on the shoulder, “I know you will, Sergeant.†Gary and Robert looked around one last time and exited the apartment.

“Come on,†Seth told Abeu. The forcefulness of his words was surprising for the youngster. When he looked up as his handler, Abeu saw that Seth was holding out a flack jacket for him. Seth cautiously added, “just in case they need you too.â€Â

Abeu begrudgingly put the safety device on. “I really hate these things. You know that Rob and Gary never leave anything left for me to do. Really, I’ll be okay without it,†he pleaded.

“Humor me,†Seth said as he completed securing the vest on Abeu.

***

Gary and Robert climbed up to the building’s rooftop and looked out over the city. The twinkling lights from the street below matched the blinking stars shining high in the night’s sky and calmed Gary’s racing heart. He always hated this part of the mission – waiting to go. He wished it would just start already. Gary and Robert had served together for some time, but had become friends far earlier when they attended college together. However, the bond between them grew exponentially when they started working together in the field and faced death day after day. The mission at hand was no different.

“Are you ready?†Robert asked. Gary nodded, taking his place next his friend at the building’s edge. Dropping his glance, he looked at the ring residing on his right middle finger. “All right,†Robert uttered, glancing at his matching piece of jewelry.

Both Gary and Robert folded their arms on top of the other. Their right and left arms swung in opposite directions, like giant clock hands as they clenched their fists. At the same time, the pair took a half-step backwards with their right foot before stepping forward in unison, bringing their right fists towards their left wrists. Each had an arm brace strapped to their left forearm. On the outer side was a large computer display while on the palm side a small opening could be seen that matched the size of the rings Robert and Gary wore. Both men yelled in unison, “Energize!†when they inserted the rings into the arm braces. When they did this, the computer terminal scanned their voices and sampled their DNA from the arm brace. Each terminal correctly identified the bearer of the activation ring and unleashed an army of black nanobots. These tiny robots swarmed over the pair until they formed a powerful protective armored covering revealing no lingering traces of humanity behind. Completely black, with no visible markings, Robert and Gary stood silently against the night.

Inside Gary’s display it read: STEALTH ARMOR ACTIVED.

Robert turned to his partner and nodded. Gary understood the silent message, “Let’ go,†and he was more than ready to oblige. Using their eyes to program the internal helmet controls, each ordered their armored suits to release drag chutes from their bodies as they jumped off the building. As they fell, the chutes filled with air and allowed the pair to glide effortlessly towards their destination.
***

The blood-sprayed body of Jeffery’s new robotic form returned to the foyer taking slow, methodical steps. The blood that trailed behind the machine could only have come from one source, which gave Kor’digh extreme pleasure. Now that Jeffery’s body had been made over into a formidable instrument of death and the human weakling had been dealt with, Qual’och was ready to resume his mission and open the three remaining Mystic doors. It was a gamble to try and take over the “mind†of the robot servant, but Qual’och was pleased that his skills at conquering the mortal minds of men had not diminished in his absence from Earth. While Jeffery was busy dealing with Gerard, Qual’och eagerly awaited visual conformation from the copies he had sent around the globe to unseal the remaining doors.

As the mechanized warrior joined them, Qual’och cast three energy spheres into the air. Within each of the glowing ball of light appeared a window to the last remaining Mystic Doors. The Earth Door, located deep in the Sahara, had been smothered with sand over the eons. The sun reflected over their silver bodies. Kor’digh was glad that it was twenty Copy Bots and not he that were excavating the site in an attempt to unearth the hidden treasure. Other Copy Bots were tasked with different assignments. The middle sphere showed a dense forest. Inside the oldest tree resided the Wood Mystic Door. Qual’och and Kor’digh watched as a Copy Bot appeared at the tree’s trunk and tore away at its protective covering. With the door completely exposed, the robot discharge twin beams of electricity at the stone seal. “Soon, my Lord,†Qual’och reverently spoke as he turned his gaze to the final sphere and saw another machine opening the Metal Mystic Door deep within a dark cavern.

Kor’digh was pleased that the doors were being opened so easily and that the Defenders had posed no significant threat to their return, but he quietly wondered how much control the wizard actually possessed over this creation and if it could truly accomplish what they needed it to do. “How long before they come for us in greater numbers,†he wondered, knowing that Master Li and his Defenders would seek them out no matter the cost. A flash of white and green from the energy spheres flared in his eyes and drew his attention away from his thoughts. The light emanated from the Wood and Metal Doors and a second later the stones sealing the entrances had been eliminated.

“One more…†Kor’digh quietly mouthed to himself.

Lifting his four arms into the air triumphantly, Qual’och spoke, “Now the Master will reign supreme,†his voice full of confidence. “Nothing can stop us now!†he continued while summoning a teleportation spell to whisk them away to the Earth Mystic Door. The command called forth a swirling mass of smoke that wrapped around the three instruments of darkness. Once fully consumed, their bodies vanished from Gerard’s foyer, dissolving into thin air.

***

Seconds later, Qual’och, Kor’digh, and Jeffery materialized under the hot Saharan sun. Quickly, Kor’digh moved away from the robotic creation, still not trusting their new ally. Jeffery looked out over his numerous copies to supervise them more closely as they continued to unearth the last remnants of the Earth Mystic Door. With the heat baking down from above, Qual’och’s lips pressed into a small grin when he saw the outermost markings of the Mystic Door at the excavation site.

The sight of the long, lost door excited the ancient wizard, calling him forward. “Pull your copies back,†he yelled. Complying, Jeffery commanded his minions to step away from the excavation site. Qual’och pressed his lips together and blew towards the site, conjuring a fantastic windstorm. The wind traveled towards the Mystic door, carrying with it the fine grains of the Sahara. Kor’digh brought his mighty arms before his face to shield his eyes. When Qual’och finished, the Mystic Door stood free and clear.

“Open the Door!†Qual’och cried out.

“I can’t let that happen Qual’och,†a voice from behind the door called out.

Kor’digh reached for his sword as Qual’och became infuriated. “Who dares oppose me?â€Â

A figure leapt over the Mystic Door and dropped into the sand. The lone opponent to Qual’och’s quest to open the final Mystic Door guarded his body and rooted his stance deep into the sand below his feet.

“Li,†Kor’digh snarled angrily. “What makes you think you can stop us this time, old man? I nearly finished you just a few hours ago.â€Â

Three more figures leapt over the door and landed beside Master Li. “Because this time he has help,†Leslie said confidently.

Kor’digh knew it was only a matter of time before Mater Li would return, but the presence of younger, and hopefully less experienced warriors, troubled him. “This will be far more difficult than if he were alone,†the reptilian warrior thought.

Qual’och’s face filled with rage. “Nothing will stand in my to see that the Master returns to Earth!†he shouted. While his voice normally squeaked, the wizard’s tone took a more powerful sound as he commanded those around, “Destroy them!†The Copy Bots turned to face the Defenders and began marching towards them in unison. Unlike the orderly advance of the robots, Kor’digh rushed over the sand. Gripping his blades, Kor’digh withdrew his swords, letting their fine steel sing past the lips of their scabbards.

Master Li looked at his new comrades, nodded, and prepared for battle. Clenching his fists, Master Li let his internal power grow as he ran into battle once more. Flames erupted around his body bringing his armor as before. Master Li had one mission task – destroy the lead robot. He hoped that by eliminating the source of the copies, the remaining robots would cease to function. Tightening his fist, Master Li summoned his straight sword and the valiant warrior began slashing through the Copy Bots on his way to his destination.

Leslie, Jayde, and Luís stood before the door. Nothing in their lives had remotely prepared them for what faced them. In fact, nothing in their wildest imaginations came close. Fear raced through their bodies as each tried to quell the urge to tremble. Despite the brave faces they attempted to show, their young bodies and showed their true vulnerability to the world. “Okay, let’s do this,†Leslie ordered as she turned to Luís, “Nothing gets past you.â€Â

Luís swallowed his fear and acknowledged the plan, secretly hoping he was up to the task.

The three newfound friends clenched their fists as Master Li showed them. Concentrating, each let their power grow and explode from within.

“Fire!†Leslie cried out, her voice piercing the hot desert air. The cry sent bright red swirling energy around her. The blinding light coursed through her heart and small intestine meridians, consuming her. The power of fire escaped the confines of her mortal shell and flowed around her before solidifying into a sleek, red metallic armor. Gloves and boots protected her extremities, while a red helmet formed around her head. Black bands wrapped around her wrists and boot tops and a black belt with her medallion fashioned around her waist. Set on the helmet was a darkened visor. Emblazed on her left breast in gold was the fire symbol.

“Earth!†Luís cried out, his voice full of newfound confidence. The call sent yellow energy throughout his body and energized his stomach and spleen meridians. Luís emerged from the transformation wearing a yellow suit of armor with black accents. His suit had the same black bands and the earth symbol marked his chest.

“Wood!†Jayde yelled and the green energy filled her body. Bright lightening bolts shot through the liver and gall bladder meridians as they exploded in a brilliant flash of green light. Emerging from the explosion, Jayde stood transformed in her green armor.

The three newest Defenders stood transformed for the first time and ready to confront their greatest enemy. Each too a deep breath as Leslie shouted, “Let’s go!â€Â

Sorry for the delay in finishing this chapter. I bought a new camera and have been playing with that a bit much. I'm still completing the re-write of Part Six and should have that done in a few weeks. It's the longest section to date.

*** Part Six ***

East McClendon was transformed into Toronto’s most prestigious neighborhoods during the last century. Marked by dozens of high rise towers, the upper-crust and elite called this area home. Old train terminals had long been removed to preserve the pristine architecture, as these residents had no need for mass transit. The One Hundred Block housed the city’s most wealthy and influential families and normally wouldn’t be suspect in an operation of this nature. However, times being what they were, no neighborhoods were entirely safe. Or even more accurate, when one reached a certain level of affluence, one paid even less attention to those around you, allowing terrorists to filter through the minute cracks of society’s gates.

Abeu tracked the lead to apartment 2-2-0, one of only two residences that occupied the second of three hundred floors in the high-rise complex. Coordinating with Robert and Gary, the Tactical Team parked their hover truck in a small alcove around the corner. The sleek vehicle offered much more interior space than was apparent from viewing their exterior. The cab section was relatively small and only able to hold a driver and navigator, but the domed trailer had been hollowed to make room for a dozen Strike Solders and tactical monitoring equipment. Inside Sergeant Quann sat at the monitoring console, double checking the tactical feeds from his men. Streams of biometric data and images danced on the screens before his eyes as he prepared to send his men into battle. Twelve NASO Strike Soldiers stood ready and wore black body armor and holstered a blaster. Activating his Com-link, Quann informed Gary and Robert, “Alpha Team, we are in position.â€Â

Quann waited for the reply and toggled the ready light inside the truck. The men saw the red light flash and dropped their protective visors and powered their side arms. Sergeant Quann could feel the level of anxiousness rise behind him and hoped the mission would begin quickly. A second later a green light flashed on the main monitor. “Prepare to deploy,†he said. The comment brought a round of muffled grunts behind him as the man on point readied the trucks hatch to open. In only a matter of minutes, they would rush the suspected terrorist den.

***

Inside apartment 2-2-0 sat four men in their mid-30s. Normally thoughts of terrorists conjure up images of radicals bent on destroying the world. While the latter is true in this case, these four men come from very well educated regions of the Earth and are dressed accordingly. All have the latest suits and sip the most expensive liquors. It’s easy to see why the neighbors failed to realize the foxes that had invaded their henhouse. Each rested comfortably on sofas and recliners situated around the apartment’s den watching the latest movie release from the major studios. Mikel, the group’s leader, gently sipped a tall glass of chilled tequila and grunted in disgust at the film they were watching. “Each year it seems they put out more and more crap. These Americans have such little class and their youth suffers for it,†he noted. Turning to his left, Mikel saw that his observation went unnoticed on Rico, his second and the man with the key to the city’s destruction. “Rico,†he paused, waiting to be acknowledged, “is everything set?†Mikel asked.

His partner turned to him with a sheepish grin, “Yeah. She’s all primed and ready to blow if they don’t pay up. All I have to do is flip the switch.â€Â

Assured that all was ready, Mikel eased back into his chair and relaxed. “I can’t believe they aren’t going to transfer the funds. It’s a shame to waste the lives of so many innocents,†he thought. “Oh well. I never understood the mindset of these idiots.â€Â

***

No one could see Gary Staal standing in the hall outside apartment 2-2-0. With his armor set to Stealth Mode, the nanobots that made up his protective shell refracted around his body, making him nearly invisible. Unless he moved or someone bumped into him he could stand and observe until needed. Using the internal command prompts, Gary, set his imaging sensors to THERMAL. The embedded sensors related with data directly into the screen on the inner layer of Gary’s visor. The advanced imaging sensors easily penetrated the apartment’s walls, allowing Gary to track each of its inhabitants. “I pick up six signatures,†Gary whispered into his Com-link.

“Copy that. I’ve got four in the main room and two next to the device,†his partner confirmed. “On the count of three, let’s take them. I’ve got the quartet. You take the twins,†Robert radioed.

“Roger,†Gary acknowledged.

“Three… Two…,†Robert announced over the Com-link, “One!†Gary pushed off with his legs, signaling the armor to boost his strength. The power boosted him forward and propelled him through the apartment’s front door. As Gary passed through the door, Robert flew through the apartment’s window, sending glass in everywhere. Mikel and the other three terrorists in the room were caught completely off guard by the two sweeping black figures entering the room with speed and agility of jungle cats. With their targets momentarily stunned, Robert and Gary separated to complete their individual objectives.

Mikel quickly recovered from his sense of shock and threw his glass onto the floor. Quickly rising to his feet, Mikel was bound and determined not to lose his hold on the city. Before he could even order his companions in the adjoining room to set off the nuclear device, Robert spun around and landed a spinning side thrust squarely into the his chest. The combined power of Robert’s cybernetic legs and enhanced strength of the Stealth Armor shattered Mikel’s ribs and caved in his chest. The sheer power lifted him off his feet and flung him through the air, over his seat, and into the rear wall of the apartment. His body dented into sheet rock and stuck for nearly a second before Mikel’s unconscious body fell to the floor.

Gary knew Robert could easily handle the remaining three terrorists and wasted no time rushing down the hall to stop the two guarding the bomb. When he turned the corner and entered the room, Gary instantly locked his eyes onto his targets. The two men each held blasters and stood on either side of the fusion bomb. Raising their weapons, they prepared to open fire at Gary.
The two men pulled their triggers in unison and hot blasts of plasma erupted from their barrels. Gary leapt over the bomb and landed between the two terrorists. Dropping first to one knee and then shifting his weight forward onto his hands, he tiger-tailed swept the two terrorists and sent them onto their backs.

After completing his sweep, Gary sprung into the air and landed straddling the terrorist on his left. Combining the force of his downward fall with a powerful cross-block, he focused all his strength to deliver a blow to the man’s solar plexus. Gary’s blow ruptured the visceral linings inside the terrorist’s chest and shook his organs causing massive internal bleeding. Not wanting to take any chanced that the man beneath him could somehow recover and cause later problems Gary connected twice with his jaw and shattered it, rendering the man unconscious.

The remaining terrorist was a bit nimbler than his partner and kip-upped to his feet while retrieving his pistol. Squeezing off a round of red-hot plasma, he tried to close the distance to Gary. The red beams pierced the wall behind Gary and cut through the sheet rock leaving behind marks of destruction. Knowing that all may be lost in a matter of seconds, the last remaining terrorist lunged toward the fusion bomb and slapped his hand on the count-down timer. The clock flashed on and began ticking down from its three minute mark.

Another blast flew over Gary’s head as he dove to the floor. Looking up he tried to figure out the best way to attack his target, but was fearful that any action he took may cause the bomb to go off. While he was now out of direct sight of the terrorist and his laser, he had to continuously revolve around the device in order to avoid being spotted or shot. That didn’t keep the terrorist from stop firing and blowing apart what little of the room’s walls remained. But Gary’s plan changed once he crawled around to the device’s front panel and saw the count-down timer clicking away. He instantly knew that the time for finesse had past and that immediate action was called for. Propping himself up to one knee and pressing his body close to the fusion bomb, Gary activated his Com-link and shouted, “Get the kid up here, now!†and launched towards the terrorist.

***

Outside the apartment building, the NAOS Strike Soldiers quickly began running towards the building from their parked station. The thud from their boots on the hard asphalt reverberated against the tall skyscrapers in the dead of night as the NASO operatives split into two attack groups. The first group entered the building through the main lobby, surprising the night bell man while the second activated the small jump jets housed in their armor’s backpack and rocketed towards the second floor.

Still seated in the armored transport, Sergeant Quann closed the Com-link with Gary, “Seth,†he spoke, “I just got word. The bomb’s ticking. Get the genius up there straight away. He’s our only chance.â€Â

A wave of fear washed over Abeu, as his greatest fear had been realized – they were too late. Seth patted Abeu on the shoulder as a means of offering nonverbal support and also a way of letting him know it was time to earn his keep. The two quickly make their way down the truck’s rear ramp and ran towards the hotel leaving Quann alone in the truck with his monitors. Quann hated being mission coordinator and resented taking the promotion a year earlier. Everything in his body told him he needed to be with his soldiers rather than staring at a wall of monitors tracking their progress, but that would not be. Carefully, he studied the incoming data and tried to provide as much information as possible from the sidelines.

***

Robert quickly jumped into the air and unleashed two snap kicks before landing again. Both connected with a single terrorist and sent him flying through the drywall into another room, bones crushed. Now the only person standing before Robert was Rico. The terrorist shook from fear and knew that Robert was going to inflict a great deal of pain before the night was done. Normally, liked a little sport, giving his opponents a small fighting chance, but hearing Gary’s call that the fusion bomb had been activated, he decided to make things short and sweet. Raising his right arm, Robert locked the internal targeting sensors on Rico and muttered into his helmet, “Good night.†The subtle squeeze in his arm fired an electrical charge from his hand that struck Rico in the torso and rendered him unconscious.

With Robert’s final terrorist unconscious, the two teams of NASO Strike Soldiers entered from the front apartment door and window in unison. Seeing that they had the apartment secured, Robert ran to help Gary. “Hold your positions people,†the lead trooper shouted as the Strike Soldiers started roving through the apartment.

***

Gary deactivated his armor and huddled over the fusion bomb. Scanning the control interface, he quickly tried to decipher the detonation mechanism. His eyes darted back and forth before they came to rest on a small series of letters in the lower right hand corner of the panel. “Damn!†he shouted in frustration.

Robert and quickly keyed in the sequence on his armor to deactivate. When the nanobots had successfully been recollected, he took his place by Gary’s side. “What did you find?†he asked.

“Oh these boys did a good job, Rob. The bomb is armed with a biometric protein lock. Once they activated the bomb, cell’s proteins forced a genetic mutation within the cell. Any mechanical breech would instantly set off the device,†Gary said.

“Great,†Robert said sarcastically. “Can the kid force the reversal?†he wondered aloud as Seth and Abeu entered.

“We’ll have to see,†Gary answered.

“What’s the situation?†Seth asked as he and Abeu rushed to the control panel.

“The device has a…†Gary started.

“A protein inhibited locking mechanism,†Abeu finished, “I can see the stamp.â€Â

“Okay, concentrate,†the handler told his protégé. Seth handed Robert the data cable that would allow the youth to enter the computer system and hopefully save their lives. The NASO operative quickly connected his end to the data port on the bomb as Seth readied his end for Abeu’s mind.

“No problem, chief,†the child responded, trying to hid his nervousness. He’d been through countless simulations before, but this was his first field op and the fate of millions was in his had and the seconds continued to tick away. Abeu wiped away the sweat from forehead as he got the thumbs-up from Seth. “Starting download,†he announced. Abeu closed his eyes to block out the surrounding light and enable his mind to focus more clearly on the data streaming in from the bomb. After a few seconds his thoughts were completely merged with the device’s biochemical and genetic computer systems.

Gary, Robert, and Seth stood back to give Abeu enough room to work. Each was amazed at the speed at which he was able to delve past the computer’s firewalls and enter the matrix of chromosomes controlling the cease-fire mechanism. Gary glanced at the timer and then back to Abeu’s eyes, which were darting about, back and forth, trying to end the protein connections and deactivate the bomb. Each second seemed like an eternity to them. Tick… Tock… seconds passed. One minute… Thirty seconds… Ten…. Nine… Eight…

Abeu finally opened his eyes and shouted, “Got it!†and the timer stopped.

Seth let out a deep sigh of relief and placed his hands on Abeu’s shoulders, “Good job.†As an analyst, he’d been out of the field for a long time and this was as much as a first mission for him as it was for Abeu – and he was glad it was finally over.

Robert walked up behind Abeu and jostled his shoulders. “Great job. You’re going to have a long and fruitful career. Glad to have you as part of the team,†he said with a smile. Activating his Com-link, Robert called NASO HQ, “Mission complete. Request clean-up crew.â€Â

Seth smiled down on his young ward and unplugged the cable from Abeu’s interface. “Let’s get you to debriefing, Ace.â€Â

***

The morning light broke over the horizon. Hours had since passed since Robert and his team saved the unsuspecting people of Toronto from certain doom. That only marked the beginning of the night for Seth and Abeu, who subsequently spent the ensuing hours being debriefed by NASO HQ. With their eyes bloodshot and bodies weary, the pair finally made their way out of the secure facility and toward the parking structure on campus. Abeu was ready to collapse and Seth wasn’t far behind.

“Let’s get you home and to bed, mister,†Seth noted, keeping a watchful eye on the youth.

Abeu welcomed the worlds, as he was more than ready to snuggle in his bed for the next day or so. “I still can’t we came that close. The simulations were never like that,†Abeu said wearily.

“Real life scenarios seldom are. Regardless, you’re the youngest trainee to be promoted to field ops and performed like a seasoned veteran,†Seth responded.

Abeu nodded, “I hope the missions aren’t all this hectic. But I suppose it beats driving a terminal all day.â€Â

Seth laughed as the pair neared his car and rustled Abeu’s hair, “Let’s get you home for some shut-eye.†Pressing his palm on the door scanner, the car’s computer checked his DNA. Approving the molecular sequences, the internal computer unlocked the side doors. Seth and Abeu slid into the car and noticed something different. The car had been locked since they arrived at NASO HQ for the previous day’s mission and with the DNA locks, there was no possible way for someone to gain access to the car; however, two golden medallions rested on the dashboard before them.

“A gift from Rob?†Abeu asked.

“It really isn’t his style,†Seth answered.

Seth and Abeu reached forward and took hold of the medallions. As they did, the pair became consumed in a vortex of blue and white energy.

***

Swirling energy abounded across all eternity in the Astral Plane. This union of Yin, Yang, and all phases of energy was the setting where Seth and Abeu were to face their destiny. No longer in the garage, the two friends appeared before Masters Tanaka and Woo, the last of the original Defenders to select replacements. While Seth stood stunned, Abeu eagerly took in his surroundings as if it were some new level in a video game.

“Seth Goldman,†Master Woo began, “your passion and bravery has not gone unnoticed. A higher calling awaits you as my time has passed. You are the Warrior of Water.â€Â

“And young Abeu,†Master Tanaka said, “your soul has aged you far beyond your flesh. It is because of your skills I choose you as the Warrior of Metal.â€Â

Seth and Abeu’s minds tried to process the information. Not in wither of their wildest dreams could they have imagined such a fantastic tale or calling. However, even as fantastic as the words spoken to them seemed, their hearts knew them to be true.

“Go now,†the Masters spoke in unison as they faded out of existence, “the others need you.†Clenching their medallions in their hands tightly, Seth and Abeu each glanced at one another. Sharing a new, unspoken bond, the pair nodded and closed their eyes, accepting the mantle of power presented to them. Each was now ready for the task at hand.

***

Master Li continued his advance towards the X Bot, leaving a trail of dismembered Copy Bots in his wake. An energy bolt ripped across the hot desert floor as Master Li sliced through another robot, but the aged warrior caught the beam in his peripheral vision. Extending his arms behind him, the elderly warrior sprang into a back flip, letting the energy pass under his arched back. When his spry feet rooted again into the sandy earth, Master Li drew his blade close and readied for his next attack.

Three Copy Bots focused their attack on Master Li and rushed the venerable Defender from behind while four additional robots attacked him head on. Two Copy Bots let loose energy bolts aimed at Master Li, but the elder Defender cart wheeled to the left, allowing the energy beams to bypass him and destroy an oncoming Copy Bot. The blast tore through the robot’s torso, leaving a gaping hole as the metallic creature fell into the sand.

Master Li crouched in the sand, targeting his opponents. Cradling his straight sword in one hand, he manifested four fire shurricans in the other. Under the glimmering Saharan sun the flaming throwing starts flew quickly into three Copy Bots, igniting their bodies in fiery explosions. One Copy Bot released a series of energy bolts that honed in on the flying instruments of death until they destroyed the flaming shurricans in a blinding ball of fire. Master Li protected his eyes from the blast and darted to his right, slicing the legs of the nearest Copy Bot. The creature fell to the sand, where Master Li impaled the robot’s chest with his blade, ending its so called life.

The final three attacking Copy Bots surrounded Master Li. Pausing just a moment, to allow them to get closer, Master Li exploded upwards and leapt onto the shoulders of the center Copy Bot. The Copy Bot to Master Li’s right fired an energy bolt, incinerating the center Copy Bot, but not before jumping off the robots shoulders and somersaulting forward. In the air, Master Li replaced his sword with a pair of flaming sais. Spinning the blades behind him, Master Li curled his fingers around the gripped the hilts and pressed the blades firmly against his forearms. Fiery contrails followed the blades as Master Li dropped into the sand on one knee and threw ancient blades behind him as he arched back. Each burning blade easily found its mark. The Copy Bots instantly exploded as the fiery metal tore through their exoskeletons sending debris past Master Li.

***

Qual’och stood atop a rolling dun under the seething Saharan sun. Flanked by his compatriots, the wizard watched the ensuing confrontation with great displeasure. “Isn’t there anyway to stop him?†he shouted seeing that five thousand years hadn’t tarnished Master Li’s abilities.

Kor’digh snarled. He was a warrior, trained by the best to serve out his Lord on the field of battle, not to be left on the sidelines while mindless machines did his job for him – and poorly at that. His eyes narrowed when they locked with Master Li’s, who began charging their position. Taking a deep breath, the mighty warrior decided that he had had enough of the waiting game. In an effortless and fluid motion, his right hand crossed his body and freed the sword from his left scabbard. The metal blade sung past the sheath’s lip.

Before Kor’digh even took one step toward Master Li, Qual’och slammed one of his many arms against his chest. Grinning, the wizard looked onward toward Master Li, never even turning to gaze and the warrior at his side, “Wait,†the wizard said.

Kor’digh huffed with displeasure, but did as he was ordered. Forcefully he slammed his blade home while his eyes burned with fury at having to sit on the sidelines longer.

Smiling, Qual’och turned to the X-Bot, “More. Make more,†he ordered.

Not even signaling a response, the giant X on the robot’s chest illuminated and in a matter of seconds countless new Copy Bots manifested in the desert. As soon as these creations sank into the hot soil, they received a signal to attack the Defenders. Step by step, the endless sea of robot creations marched off to destroy Bruch’oda’s enemies.

***

Three Copy Bots came slamming down on Luís Mendoza, Defender of Earth, forcing him into the soft sand. Try as he might, the weight from the three robots was simply too much for the Mexican. Feeling his chest compress fell to the ground under the pressure of three Copy Bots, he tried to free himself once more, but succumbed to the power of the robots. Luís was a proud man, never wanting to impose on anyone, but he knew he couldn’t do this on his own any longer and shouted to his new friends, “A little help here!â€Â

Jayde looked over her shoulder towards Luís’ call as she dispatched another Copy Bot with her sword. Racing to her new friend’s aid, Leslie joined her a moment later and the two women destroyed the robots.

“On three,†Leslie shouted as the women each took hold of the metallic rubble. “One… Two… Three!†and the two Defenders lifted the lifeless hulks off Luís.

“Thanks,†Luís sighed under his armor, but before the trio could regroup, energy blasts rained down, exploding all around. The fireballs threw the young Defenders in separate directions. Each landed with a loud thud, knocking the wind out of their lungs. Leslie tried to get up, but the force of the explosion was too much. When she finally managed to get to her hands and knees, she collapsed down again. “We can’t give up. We’ve got to keep going,†she pleaded.

Pain electrified their bodies as fatigue ravaged not only their muscles, but minds as well. Pushing aside their discomfort, the Defenders came to their feet. What they saw through their visors failed to yield any meaningful form of expression. Descending on their position were sixty Copy Bots where there had previously been none. Somehow Jayde managed to sum up the situation with one succinct word, “****.â€Â

“Yeah,†the Luís added, but was thinking of even a more colorful metaphor of his own.

Leslie could feel Jayde and Luís’ fear flow over her body as they faced the onslaught before them; however, Master Li installed within each of them the importance of this battle. She took a deep breath and was more determined than ever not to fail. “Don’t forget what we’re here for,†Leslie said. Looking directly at Luís, Leslie made it known that she wasn’t about to lay down her arms and let Bruch’oda have the Earth. “Luís, stay and protect the door. Jayde and I’ll fend off as many as we can.â€Â

“But,†Luís began, but was quickly caught off by Leslie.

“We have no choice,†Leslie blurted out, “Unless Master Li can stop the X-Bot; you’re our last chance to keep the door closed.â€Â

Luís Mendoza’s body felt as if it weighed a ton at that moment. He realized that Leslie was right and that it was his responsibility alone to ensure that no one got passed him. With a heavy heart, his sighed an unsure, “I know.†He hadn’t known the two women before him for long, but already he’d developed strong protective feelings for them. Tightening his fists, he committed to doing everything in his power not to let any of the Copy bots past him and protect his new friends. He vowed not to fail. He was the strongest of the three and their best chance at Earth’s survival. Begrudgingly, Luís ran at full speed for the Mystic Door while the ladies drew their swords and dug into the sand for their next confrontation.

Incoming blasts from the Copy Bots exploded around Luís as he continued his sprint for the Door. Instinctively, his body shifted from side to side, allowing the powerful energy beams to harmlessly impact the sand. With the Mystic Door in sight, Luís’ mind drifted back to his youth and the games he played – weaving in and out of defenders as he raced down the football field. Luís’ mind was still racing from the harrowing journey he just undertook, so he had no idea how he actually made it to the stone edifice, but was glad that he did. Standing tall, the Earth Defender channeled his energy into his right hand and commanded a broadsword to materialize. Luís dug his feet into the sand beneath him and lowered his stance. As the Earth Defender readied for battle, his blade shimmered in golden light.

Several of the Copy Bots’ energy blasts fell short of Luís’ position. This wasn’t by accident, as their explosions cast walls of sand into the air and obstructed his vision. The desert wind then quickly took hold of the fine grains and carried them forward, further blinding him from the advancing army. When the sand finally blew past him, Luís sensed something strange. He couldn’t place a finger on it, but it gnawed at him. He knew he was in danger, but nothing he saw matched what he felt. “What is it?†he thought to himself, but then he realized what his heightened senses were attempting to convey.

A borage of energy bolts laid into him, sending a fireball into the sky as the force knocked Luís backwards against the Mystic Door. His helmet rapped several times against the stone cover as the b last continued to elevate him off the ground. When the flames finally died down, a battered Luís fell like a rag doll into sand beneath his feet. Shaking his head, Luís regained his focus and saw several Copy Bots flanking around Leslie and Jayde’s position and heading straight for him. “This is it,†Luís told himself. Reabsorbing his broadsword, Luís focused all this thought and power to erect a giant energy shield around the Mystic Door. “I hope I can hold this long enough,†he wondered.

The Wood Defender wielded her sword like a seasoned master. Despite being surrounded by immeasurable combatants, Jayde’s head was remarkably clear. Her previous training in advanced meditations allowed her the focus on the moment and let her senses guide her actions, much in the same manner the Zen Warriors known as Samurais did ages ago. Jayde effortlessly evaded a series of punches and kicks from surrounding Copy Bots and battled back, countering with her fist and sword. In a bust of speed, the young Wood Defender slipped mast a series of Copy bots and swiped her blade around in a large crescent arc, destroying four robots in a single pass. Jayde drew the blade close to her body and crouched near the sand, trying to decide her next move when an energy blast impaled her back, sending her body reeling.

Jayde stumbled for a few feet before crashing into the sand face-first. The force from the impact dislodged her grip on the sword and it flew several feet away. Pain traveled through her bones, muscles, and ligaments, causing her to coil into the fetal position. Never in her life has she experienced such a focused blow. All she could think about was how thankful her armor held.

The Copy Bot artificial intelligence program knew better than to leave any one of the Defenders down for long and quickly joined others moving in for the kill. In all, six of the robotic warriors marched in on the Wood Defender’s position, preparing to fire.

Jayde quickly put aside her pain and scanned her surroundings. Seeing the dozen silver feet approaching, she took a deep breath, trying not to wince at the penetrating pain emanating in her thoracic cage. One of the approaching Copy Bots charged for her, but Jayde rolled aside and used the robot’s kinetic energy to throw it aside. Not lying still, the Wood Defender moved again to shorten the firing distance before the other Copy Bot could compensate and adjust their energy beams to strike her. The resulting blasts harmlessly fell into the hot sand rather than her. Rising to her feet, Jayde swept the sand around her, catching the hilt of her sword under her toes and flung it into the air. Spinning her body around, Jayde whipped her boot across the head of one of the Copy Bots, ripping it off before catching her blade in her hand. Slashing her blade further, Jayde managed to slice through the remaining robots causing them to explode.

For the first time in her life, Leslie felt important. The endless hours teaching had little impact on others, she thought, but this, fighting for the Earth, was a grand endeavor and worth any sacrifice. The sense of pride filled her young body and erupted in a smile beneath her helmet. Despite being in the center of a fierce battle, Leslie couldn’t believe how peaceful she was - how the burden of saving the world sat so comfortably on her shoulders. Her moment of personal thought quickly abated as she saw several Copy Bots closing in on her position.

“This is almost fun,†ran through Leslie’s mind and she took off running towards the group of Copy Bots. As the Leslie neared them, she leapt into the air twisting her body. Courage flowed through her body and the heart and small intestine meridians. As their energy circulated, it permeated through her skin until she burst into flames. She continued spinning until the flames formed a giant tornado and thrust her sword in front. Leslie flew straight for the Copy Bots, who were completely caught unprepared for such a devastating attack. One by one, Leslie pierced thought the metallic bodies of her enemies until none remained. Landing, she knelt in the sand and placed her sword by her side as the platoon of robots exploded behind her.

***

Kor’digh tightened his fists and grew restless standing aside, watching the robotic warriors suffer at the hands of the humans. “It should be me out there,†he thought. “These robots are no warriors. They have no skill!†Kor’digh stepped forward, but was quickly met with a strong arm against his chest from Qual’och.

“Wizard, let me do my duty!†he snarled.

Qual’och calmly looked at the distinguished warrior. “Not yet. Once they’ve been worn down,†the wizard stated. “This should speed things up,†he said with an evil grin. Qual’och’s eyes turned a cold blue light in the bright sun as his arms rose into the air.

Looking into the distance, Kor’digh saw what the wizard had done as each of the Copy Bots en route to the Mystic Door took flight. “Excellent,†he thought, “this will be interesting to watch.â€Â

Luís stood behind the shield he erected and saw the Copy Bots ascend into the air. Once free of their Earthly confines, they began firing energy blasts. The white beams of destruction rained down from above as he muttered, “You have got to be kidding.†Each strike weakened the barrier he supported and drove Luís further into the sand. Time after time, the explosions on the shield pushed him deeper in the sand until his boots sunk beneath the surface. The sheer power of the robots’ blast was even causing his arms to buckle under pressure. It had only been a matter of seconds, but Luís didn’t know how much longer he’d be able to sustain the shield around the door. Taking a deep breath, Luís tried to focus his mind and enhance his concentration at holding the shield.

Leslie and Jayde sensed that the attack on Luís’ position had taken a turn for the worse and saw him being crushed under the power attacks of the Copy bots. Deciding to forego their current plan of attack, both Defenders decided to race for the Mystic door and help their teammate. Their trek to the Door did not go unnoticed by the legions of Copy Bots and the two women soon came under fire. Each used their swords to deflect the oncoming blasts either into the sand or back into the air. The ricocheted energy beams found their targets and soon robots fell from the sky in a downpour of fire and metal.

When Leslie and Jayde arrived at the shield, they turned around and saw ever increasing number of Copy Bots approaching their position. Both knew that if things kept at their current pace, they would be overwhelmed soon and the door fall under the forces of evil. “How are you holding up?†Jayde asked Luís.

Between explosions, the Earth Defender responded, “Hanging in there, but I need to get these robots off me.â€Â

“We’ll take care of them, Luís,†Leslie answered back.

Their only hope was that Master Li could accomplish his mission in time. Their sense of urgency increased as another wave of twenty… thirty… sixty… Copy Bots appeared began their assault. The power coursing their meridians flowed into their swords transforming them into powerful new weapons. Jayde’s sword transformed into a double bladed battle axe while Leslie’s power continued evolving in her blade, causing it burst into flames.

“Don’t they ever stop?†Jayde asked Leslie.

The Fire Defender looked at Jayde through her visor, “Not until we get the original out of the way. Master Li’s trying but he has problems of his own,†Leslie said, pointing her free hand at their mentor. “In any case, it’s time to put the hurt on.†Jayde nodded and the two women began running toward the oncoming army, hoping to buy some time for Luís.

Leslie was the first to meet the forthcoming wall of metal and there was no love lost between this batch of robots and the humans. The Fire Defender summoned her inner fire, causing her flaming sword to grow even stronger. Billowing flames streaked into the air as Leslie wielded her blade.

Four groups of Copy Bots changed their attack vector from the main assault force and headed straight for her. Two moved directly for the women, while the remaining squads flanked their position and headed towards the Mystic Door. Leslie and Jayde saw the diverting groups and shifted their strategy and tried to attack two groups each. While this tactic was the only option to them, the Copy Bots’ mission was clear: divide and conquer. Increasing their speed, the outside groups quickly circumnavigated the oncoming Defenders and slipped behind the hill of fallen Copy Bots. “Go back and help Luís,†Leslie instructed, but as Jayde turned to retreat, the two groups directly ahead opened fire on them.

The resulting explosions threw the women into the dunes. With the wind knocked out of them, the pair barely regained their footing before the Copy Bots surrounded them. Jayde knew she had to get back to Luís, no matter the cost. Every second that passed, she could hear the pounding the shield he erected was taking. She didn’t know how long he could hold it up, so she gripped her battle axe and let her fingers meld with the leather grips. Jayde pressed hard into the sand and pushed off into the air.

The Copy Bots tracked her arc and opened fire. The beams of electricity flew past her, but passed close enough to her body that she could sense their intense heat. Jayde began tumbling, tucking her body tightly, so that there was less of a target to hit. The Wood Defender focused her thoughts on her battle axe and filled it with energy. Jayde rotated her body to orient her for the attack and gripped her battle axe with both hands, splitting the weapon into two single bladed axes. A foot off the ground, Jayde took the axes and swung her arms wide. When she made contact with the hot Saharan sand, she threw her twin axes towards the Copy Bots. The shining green blade quickly tore through the metal flesh of Copy Bots, leaving a path of destruction. Those not hit by the axes didn’t hesitate to attack on the lone, green warrior and fired energy blasts as they crept in on her position.

Jayde dove to her left to avoid contact with the deadly energy attacks; however it was not enough. Several blasts found their target and collided with the Defender’s armor. The resulting explosions forced her backwards and buried Jayde into the sand. Winded, she looked up and saw two Copy Bots standing over her. Before they could fire, the twin axe blades returned form their sortie and passed through the center torso of each metallic death machine and imbedded themselves into the ground next to her. “Lucky me,†she thought to herself and brought herself up to her feet. When she finally stood upright, Jayde saw that her attack was more effective than she had thought. Smoking bodies of Copy Bots littered the sand around her. Not wanting to loose the momentum she’d collected, the Jayde headed back into battle.

Qual’och stomped his foot in the sand and grunted with disgust. He could have expected such a fight from the original Defenders, but he was surprised that these new humans were able to combat his forces with such ease. Taking a deep breath, the hot air flowed past his nostrils and deep into his lungs, singeing the reptilian flesh along the way. Taking a small step forward, the wizard blurted out his order to the X-Bot, “More.†The order was barely audible because it came from deep in his quivering voice and under his breath, the subsequent utterances grew in “More… More… More…,†he chanted to the X-Bot, which heeded his call and created an endless supply or robotic warriors. With the new warriors present, Qual’och managed to calm down just a bit and elevate his hopes that the numerous robots would save their defenses and grant him victory.

***

The first wave of Copy Bots approached Luís’ energy barrier. Rather than firing one at a time, the robots moved strategically around the Mystic Door. The Earth Defender saw this and knew that only one thing could be coming… a massive volley of power. He swallowed hard and dug deeper into the sand, trying to gather more strength to reinforce the shield, but his body was almost at its limit and there was little else to give. Now in position the battalion of Copy Bots opened fire in unison with enough power to melt a skyscraper. Luís struggled against the onslaught, but it was simply too much for its lone defender.

The powerful energy beams repeatedly clashed with the Earth chi Luís erected around the Mystic Door. Every muscle in his body ached and sweat poured off his head as he struggled to maintain the protective barrier. He hoped that the others would succeed in their tasks, but deep down he understood that it was too late as he dropped to one knee. Even as Leslie and Jayde returned to his aid, the constant bombardment from the Copy Bots was too much and Luís collapsed causing the shield to shimmer in the bright sun before fading out of existence. “No! I must find…,†Luís tried to say, but was too drained - even the mundane task of breathing was a chore at this moment. If Luís didn’t know better he’d say his body weighed a thousand tons and that the air around him was on fire. Every movement hurt and burned his body.

The Jayde and Leslie rushed to his aid and cried out, “Luís!†while trying to pick up their partner.

“Need….. help…,†Luís panted through gasping breaths.

Jayde and Leslie stood beside the Earth Defender, looking at the army of Copy Bots ready to open the final Mystic Door. “We need a miracle,†Leslies said somberly.

Master Li continued to battle towards the master X-Bot, slicing and destroying an unfathomable amount of robotic carnage, but his thoughts were drawn elsewhere. Something in him told Master Li that something wasn’t right. In fact, it told him that something was wrong. Turning his head slightly so that his peripheral vision caught the Mystic Door, Master Li saw that the shield Luís had previously erected had fallen. More to his dismay was that he also saw an army of Copy Bots about to kill his protégés.

Master Li tore the cores out of two Copy Bots with his flaming sais and raced to out flank his attackers. In pursuit were several robots, but they couldn’t keep pace with the elder warrior. As he raced towards the X-Bot, Master Li saw that each of his young comrades were continuously being blasted by the Copy Bots and had fallen under their power. Any moment now, he realized, Luís, Leslie, and Jayde would be killed. From deep within his core, Master Li’s inner fire boiled over at the thought of losing them and the Earth. Summoning every bit of his fire chi, Master Li planed to end this assault now. Between his hands formed a small energy sphere and it swarmed with molten fire as hot as the sun. First the size of a baseball, then a basketball, the sphere continued to gain mass. The burning light from the fireball illuminated the sand and started melting the silicone within. “Kiya!!!!†Master Li screamed as the sphere approached critical mass. His cry was so loud that Luís, Jayde, and Leslie looked up from their impending deaths and stared at Master Li.

Qual’och and Kor’digh also saw Master Li’s display of power and the wizard was only able to think of one thing. “Kizxa,†he muttered.

Master Li fueled additional energy into the sphere. He struggled to maintain control, screaming louder in agony each second as it grew. At the Mystic Door, the three Defenders received a simple message from Master Li, “Move.â€Â

The three Defenders weren’t sure how Master Li was able to communicate with them telepathically, but when they focused their attention on Master Li and saw the molten ball of fire released, they instantly understood his instruction in perfect detail.

The enormous energy sphere, filled with pure fire chi, flew over the desert consuming the army of Copy Bots. Their bodies instantly exploded, adding to the sphere’s power and speed until it destroyed every last robot between Master Li and the Mystic Door. Master Li fell to his knees after releasing the sphere, weakened by the task of creating such a weapon. Breathing heavily, he propped himself up and witnessed the wake of his power, viewing the caramelized path of destruction now before him.

The Earth, Fire, and Wood Defenders leapt out of the way of Master Li’s energy sphere with only a moment to spare. The resulting collision of the powerful blast and Mystic Door sent the three humans flying into the desert as a mushroom cloud filled the sky and a thunderous roar erupted on the quiet dune.

Struggling to get up from the dune, Luís felt a strange pulse of energy rush over his body. Unsure of what was happening; Luís thought to himself, “Somehow, the energy remnants from the blast must be recharging me.†In seconds he became fully charged and felt ready to retake his place on the battlefield. The Earth Defender propped himself up to one knee, but before he could lift himself up the rest of the way, Luís saw something he wasn’t prepared for: two armored hands extending towards him, ready to help him up. While he knew that Leslie and Jayde were near, the colors of the arms before him were blue and white.

The Metal and Water Defenders stood with their backs to sun wearing armor similar to the others’ with a halo cast upon them. Abeu donned the Metal Defender battle armor and Seth wore the mantle of Water.

“Come on, let us help you up,†Abeu said as he and Seth pulled Luís to his feet.

“Who are…?†Luís attempted to say, but cut himself off as he realized the final two Defenders had arrived. Even though he tried, the Mexican couldn’t fight back the feeling of joy or the smile that swelled beneath his helmet. The trio was joined by Leslie and Jayde and the five Defenders stood facing one another for the first time. “Looks like the gang’s all here,†the Jayde commented, putting her hands on Abeu’s shoulders.

“Yes, but introductions will have to wait. We’ve got a job to do,†Leslie summarized.

The five Defenders nodded and in unison and set out to guard the final Mystic Door from evil.

***

Qual’och’s blood boiled at the defeat he continued to suffer. All thoughts of strategy temporarily left him and he stood mouth agape wanting to scream in desperation. Never before had he seen such a display of destructive power from one of the Defenders. Deep within he knew there was nothing more he could do to turn the tide of this battle. Kor’digh and X-Bot turned to their “leader†and awaited further instructions. Seconds ticked by and nothing was uttered by the robe-clad sorcerer, whose gaze was still transfixed on the fading mushroom cloud.

“Enough!†Kor’digh yelled, stepping forward.

Qual’och knew that he must abdicate to the Dark Warrior and stepped back, accepting Kor’digh’s leadership. He just hoped it wasn’t too late and that their mission on Earth could still succeed and open the doorway to the Shadow Realm.

“I’ve got Li,†Kor’digh billowed, “You two deal with the others. Don’t worry about killing them. Just see to it that the door is opened. Rush the door, sacrificing anything in your way and use everything at your disposal – above and below ground,†the general ordered. Seeing that Qual’och and the AI circuits in the X-Bot comprehended his orders, the General leapt into the air.

The X-Bot wasted no time and began making copies again. After each set materialized, they marched straight towards the Mystic Door.

Qual’och took Kor’digh’s suggestion to heart and raised his arms. Chanting an ancient spell, the marching Copy Bots split into three groups. One remained on the ground, charging through the sea of melted glass. The second group took to the air and the third burrowed underground. “Annihilate them,†Qual’och said to X-Bot.

***

Master Li looked up from his position and saw Kor’digh streaking towards him and readied himself for battle. Standing firm and digging his feet into the sand, Master Li gripped his twin sais, his perspiration mixing with the weapon’s leather grips. He knew this was the final confrontation and to the winner went victory. Master Li squinted in the bright African sun, tracking his target as it streaked through the air. The last original Defender channeled chi into his legs and pushed off to meet Kor’digh. He slammed the hilts of the sais together and reformed his mighty straight sword, drawing it close to his chest as he approached Kor’digh.

The Dark Warlord smiled at his mortal enemy. It had been far too long since he battled and nothing would give the ancient Dark Warrior more pleasure than sending Master Li to his grave. Pulling his feet forward, Kor’digh assumed a vertical position in the air. The Defenders weren’t the only ones that had mastered the ability to control chi. Summoning dark chi, Kor’digh sent two energy blasts towards Master Li.

Master Li arched his back to dodge the oncoming attack and started tumbling. The first energy wave floated floating under his legs, but the next hit him squarely in the torso. The resulting explosion sent shards of armor and chi into the sky above and sand below. The blast flung Master Li rocketing towards the sandy dunes and he landed with a resounding thud. The blow briefly knocked the wind out of him and loosened his grip on his sword. Master Li was quickly reminded of his situation as his ears heard the familiar sound of metal slipping past the lips of a scabbard. Opening his eyes, he saw Kor’digh approaching from above with his swords drawn.

Kor’digh plunged into the sandy dune where Master Li laid; however, the skilled Defender managed to roll out of the way as the Dark Warrior landed. Kor’digh couldn’t compensate for Li’s movement and thrust his swords into the hot sand as Master Li took hold of his sword and sprung to his feet.

Seeing Kor’digh still hunched over, trying to retrieve his swords from the sand, Master Li jumped and connected a powerful roundhouse kick to Kor’digh’s midsection. The strike sent the evil warrior into the sand, but he rolled out of the fall and came to rest on one knee. “You’re going to have to do better than that, Li,†he taunted and rushed towards his enemy. Calling upon his dark power, Kor’digh fired two dark chi strikes at Master Li.

Master Li leapt backwards, avoiding the powerful energy blasts. In doing so, he allowed Kor’digh free access to his weapons. The Dark Warrior managed to retrieve one sword by the time Master Li set foot on the sand once more and immediately attempted to finish him by swinging his blade at the elderly Defender. Even in his weakened state, the venerable Defender had enough power in him to counter Kor’digh’s attack and locked blades. “Likewise,†Master Li responded.

Kor’digh took the opening and fell backwards, pulling on Master Li’s gi, taking the Defender with him. As the pair moved in unison, Kor’digh kicked Master Li off when his back hit the hot sand. Master Li easily spun his body around and regained his footing.

Master Li quickly summoned three fire shurricans and threw them towards Kor’digh. The flaming stars soared over the hot desert floor, but the Dark Warrior kip-upped and slashed his mighty blade at the oncoming stars, easily deflecting them. “This toying must come to an end,†he thought and rushed Master Li.

The two eternal warriors of good and evil clashed in the desert. With each thrust and parry, their swords and armor shot electrical sparks into the sky. No matter what either tried, the other had a capable counter that deprived a final victory.

Atop the Earth Mystic Door, Abeu stood poised with his Bow taking aim at the flying Copy Bots. Pulling back from the weapon’s frame, he called forth powerful metallic energy and let fly white energy bolts streaking towards the flying robots… and one by one they exploded and came crashing into the ground. “This isn’t too hard,†he thought to himself. From the corner of his eye, Abeu saw a blue disk streak across his position. Abeu tracked the weapon with his eyes and followed it as it impacted another flying Copy Bot – one that would have gotten the better of him.

The arcing disk swept down and returned to its owner – the Water Defender. “Look sharp, kiddo. They’re going to be smarter than a video game,†Seth yelled over the endless amount of explosions surrounding them.

“Right!†Abeu yelled back, knowing that he had been careless. After vowing to be more vigilant, he resumed picking off Copy Bots from his perch.

Seth curled his fingers around the disk and transformed the weapon converted it into a long and nimble straight sword. Spying two Copy Bots approaching the door, he sped over the sand, crisscrossing his path to confuse the firing mechanisms within the metal beasts. Two meters in front of the oncoming attackers, Seth jumped into the air and landed between the Copy Bots. When they locked onto him and fired, he dropped effortlessly into the splits and avoided the twin pairs of energy blasts. The sources of those charges weren’t as fortunate and each Copy Bot took the full force of the energy beams and exploded.

***

Luís Mendoza ran over the hot sand. Each step he increased his speed towards an oncoming group of Copy Bots. The lead metallic warrior took aim and fired energy bolts from its claws. The beams flew through the air towards the approaching yellow streak, but before the energy blasts could hit him, Luís jumped into the air. Spreading his arms like a swan, he gained altitude. The pursuing Copy Bots circled and begin firing up at the Defender. He flipped back and began diving towards arth. The Copy Bots again took aim and fired several blasts at the descending warrior. Shifting his weight ever-so-slightly, he was able to glide between the oncoming shots.

Luís continued falling faster and faster. Drawing his earth chi to his right fist, his glove glowed bright yellow. Completing his descent, the Earth Defender thrust his fist into the sand, sending a powerful wave into the Earth. The impact sent sand into the air and a rippling undulation along Sahara’s surface. The energy in the waves pummeled the Copy Bots into oblivion as thunder rang in the heavens.

Luís looked up and smiled. But before he could stand to tackle another division of Copy Bots, he heard a powerful rumbling coming from somewhere else. “The wave can’t still be going on, can it?†he thought. “Where is that coming from?â€Â

Luís isn’t the only one wondering where the subterranean rumbles originated. The other Defenders also heard the trembling noises and tried to determine its source. It was then that the team saw sand sifting away from the area in front of the Mystic Door. Rising from below the hot sand was an army of Copy Bots. This group had effectively circumnavigated the Defenders and was positioned between them and the final Mystic Door.

“Yes!†Qual’och jubilantly yelled. “Open the door!†he shouted.

“Stop them!†Leslie yelled as she began racing towards the Mystic Door leaving a trail of dismembered Copy Bots in her wake. The others did the same, but were now faced with an army of robots in front and behind them. Each Defender sped towards the Earth Mystic Door, but the outer layer of Copy Bots set up a perimeter and kept them at bay. Lining up beside one another, the Copy Bots launched a series of energy volleys towards the Defenders, who constantly had to dodge the blasts. This greatly impeded their progress and allowed the inner row of Copy Bots to take position directly in front of the stone tablet sealing the Mystic Door.

The lead robot energized its emitter as the Defenders were met by the opposing wall of Copy Bots. No matter how hard they tried, Leslie and the others couldn’t get through the barrier before the robot unleashed its energy wave into the Mystic Door. Yellow energy filled the stone door, sending bolts of lightening from its core.

***

Master Li and Kor’digh stood atop their dune, swords crossed and looking deeply into the other’s eyes. “It’s done Li. You’ve failed,†Kor’digh hissed. Master Li looked at the Mystic Door and saw what Kor’digh spoke was true. His heart sunk knowing that the Earth will now feel the wrath of Bruch’oda once more. With his attention diverted, Kor’digh easily shoved the elderly warrior aside. The oldest Defender stumbled backwards a few steps before settling his footing. “Until we meet again Li,†Kor’digh shouted and vanished in a cloud of darkness. Qual’och, X-Bot, and the Copy Bots joined him and disappeared in plumes of smoke.

With the battle over and their hearts broken, the five new Defenders raced to meet Master Li in the center of the battlefield. Out of breath and barely able to stand, Leslie was the first to speak, “We’re sorry,†she said between heaving breaths.

“It’s my fault,†Luís managed to get out between gasps.

Master Li extended his arm to the Earth Defender and placed it comfortingly on his shoulder. “No. It was an honorable battle with an unfortunate outcome. However, the war is not lost,†he said.
