Shepka Productions has announced the digital release of their new revenge thriller, Dead Before They Wake. Perhaps the most interesting cast member in this one is Sylvester McCoy — yes, the Seventh Doctor — but it sounds like his role is a minor one. Alex is a nightclub bouncer who’s about to encounter a more grisly side of night life. He’s been hired by a retired lawyer to track down a missing teenage girl. It’s as bad as they think — she’s been abducted by a trafficking ring, and they’ve got a limited amount of time to find the bad guys, take them down and bring her home. Dead Before They Wake stars Nathan Shepka (Lock & Load, The Baby in the Basket), Grace Cordell (Cara), Manjot Sumal (The Last Bus, hit BBC sitcom Scot Squad), Kareem Nasif (The Job). I'm interested in how they've researched and portrayed these gangs. It's vital that movies like this exist to educate and maybe even mobilize people against such heinous crimes. Plus, having someone like Sylvester McCoy, even in a smaller role, adds a layer of credibility and nostalgia. The focus on a gritty, real-world issue through the lens of a revenge thriller might just be the hook needed to get more eyes on this problem. I'm setting a reminder for the VOD release date.

This movie, "Dead Before They Wake," has caught my interest not just for entertainment but for the message it seems to carry. The idea of shedding light on sex trafficking via cinema could really spark some much-needed conversations. I appreciate that they've taken the time to research and base it on real events. It’s important for such stories to be told. Having Sylvester McCoy involved is a nice touch, though I'm curious about how big his part really is. I'm planning to watch it with my older kids; it might be a good way to discuss these heavy topics in a controlled environment.
