Can We Talk About How Iconic the 'Rocky' Series Really Is?

I've been rewatching the 'Rocky' films lately, and I can't help but appreciate how they’re not just about boxing but also about resilience, determination, and personal growth. The way they tackle sentiments of hope and struggle resonates beyond the ring, especially in today's world.

I mean, the original 'Rocky' is a masterpiece of character development. Sylvester Stallone really created something special, it's gritty, touching, and the underdog story hits right in the feels. Then you have 'Rocky II' and 'Rocky III' upping the stakes while still focusing on where Rocky started. Plus, how can we forget the epic training montages?!

And let’s not even get started on 'Creed.' Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler breathed new life into the franchise. I love how it pays homage to Rocky's legacy while carving out its own path. Do you think it manages to stand on its own, or does the nostalgia factor play too much into its success?

What are your thoughts? Which film in the series is your favorite? And how do you feel about Rocky's overall impact on cinema? Let’s hear it!

Totally agree with you on the original Rocky being pure character gold. Stallone wrote himself into this broken, quiet guy who barely speaks but you feel every bit of his pain and small hopes. That scene where he’s talking to Adrian in the pet shop still gets me every time. The sequels build on that heart without losing it, even when they get bigger. Creed though? I think it stands completely on its own. Adonis has his own struggles, his own family ghosts, and Jordan sells the anger and the search for identity so well. The nostalgia is there, sure, but it’s not carrying the movie—Coogler’s direction and the fresh story do. It feels like a new chapter, not just a reboot cash-in.

Yeah the resilience thing is what keeps bringing me back. Rocky isn’t some invincible hero—he’s just stubborn and refuses to quit on himself. That’s why the training montages work so hard; you see the real effort. Creed does the same but updates it. I honestly believe it stands alone fine. Sure, Rocky being the mentor adds weight, but take him out and Adonis’s journey still holds up strong. The music, the Philly feel, the family drama—it’s all there fresh. Nostalgia helps open the door, but people stay for the new story.

Look, Rocky is the king of underdog stories because it never lies to you. Life sucks, you get beat down, but you keep getting up. That’s it. No magic, just heart. The whole series keeps that core even when the fights get crazier. Creed? It’s good, really good, but I feel the nostalgia pulls too much. Without Stallone showing up, would it have the same pull? Maybe not. Jordan is great, Coogler directs like crazy, but it leans hard on the Rocky name and cameos. Still worth watching, just not as independent as people claim.
