Within a half-hour, we’ve gone from knowing almost nothing about Nintendo‘s upcoming Ocarina of Time remake to knowing just about everything. The special 40th Anniversary presentation began with a concert […]

Finally Link can jump on command. I remember trying to jump off small ledges in 1998 and just falling because the game only let it happen automatically at certain spots. This small change is going to feel huge once people actually play it. Also happy they kept load times between areas instead of removing them just to make it faster. Sometimes speed is not the most important thing, the feeling of the world matters more. The voice acting for cutscenes is the part I am most curious about because the original had so much silence and text boxes. I hope they pick voices that match how I imagined these characters for years. November 5 is far but at least now we know everything instead of guessing for months.

Ok but why does Link look like he just walked out of a skincare ad. His face is way too smooth and shiny for someone who fights monsters in a forest. I am not against new graphics but this specific choice looks strange to me. The rest of the environments look nice though, the Deku Tree looks like an actual living thing now instead of a texture.

I still don't understand why people expect every remake to change the story or gameplay completely. This is Ocarina of Time, the whole point is that it is Ocarina of Time. Small additions like sprinting and jumping make sense because those are quality of life things, not changes to what the game actually is. If you want a different experience there are other games for that. I like that Nintendo is being careful here instead of turning it into something unrecognizable just to impress people who were never going to buy it anyway.

The real ocarina peripheral is a smart move honestly. Kids who never got to play the original with an actual instrument will finally understand why the game was special. I just hope the voice recognition works well because Nintendo has had mixed results with that kind of tech before.

Voice acted cutscenes is the update I did not know I needed until now. Text boxes were fine in 1998 but going back to them today feels outdated compared to every other game. As long as the voice direction is decent this could change how emotional some scenes feel, especially anything involving Zelda or Ganondorf. Curious if they kept the same script or expanded some dialogue since there is more room now with full voice instead of just text boxes that had to be short. This is honestly the update that excites me the most out of everything they showed, more than graphics or jumping.

Muscle memory comment made me laugh because it is true, I could probably walk through Kokiri Forest with my eyes closed at this point. Excited to see how remembering the game combined with new visuals feels when actually playing instead of watching a walkthrough on stream.

Sprinting on a button hold sounds like such an obvious feature but I guess in 1998 it just was not common yet in this type of game. Small changes like this really show how much game design expectations have shifted over the years even in a remake meant to feel familiar.
