The situation with Supergirl reminds me a lot of the reaction to the original Wonder Woman film. While that movie was a huge success and brought the character into a new light, some of the follow-up films just didn't capture the same magic, and I think expectations were too high. I remember feeling genuinely excited to see how they would expand the universe, but some of those later projects felt like they stumbled over themselves. It's a shame because I think Supergirl has so much potential, and her story could resonate with audiences if done right. But, unfortunately, the pressure to match prior successes can lead to creative missteps.

I honestly think people decided they hated Supergirl before they even watched it. A lot of the criticism felt more focused on the politics around the movie than the movie itself. I watched it because I wanted a different kind of DC story, and I liked that Kara was not written as a perfect hero who always knows what to do. She is angry, reckless, and dealing with some heavy stuff. That made her feel more human to me. I also liked the idea of taking her away from Earth and giving her a more personal story with Krypto. It was not perfect, but I never understood why some people acted like it was some disaster that needed to be mocked. I am glad it is coming to HBO Max because now people can actually watch it at home and decide for themselves instead of repeating what they heard online.

I actually think the early hate hurt this movie more than people admit. I saw so many comments treating Supergirl like some political statement instead of a superhero movie. That made me curious enough to watch it when it hits streaming. I like darker superhero stories when there is a reason for the darker tone. The story with Kara dealing with vengeance, justice, and Krypto sounds more personal than another movie about saving the entire planet. Jason Momoa being involved also makes the whole thing sound entertaining to me. I am not expecting it to be perfect. I just want a decent DC movie with characters I care about. If I enjoy it, I enjoy it. If I do not, at least I actually watched it instead of joining a campaign against a movie because someone online told me it was bad.

I think Supergirl suffered from bad marketing, and I also think the studio should have done a better job preparing Milly Alcock for the press tour. She was still fairly new to being the lead of a huge superhero movie, so putting her in interviews where every answer could become a headline was risky. That Variety interview especially gave people a lot of material to argue about. I am not saying Milly should have been fake or completely scripted, but Warner Bros should have known what kind of questions she would get and prepared her better. Variety knows how to get strong answers from actors because strong answers make better headlines. Then social media takes one sentence and turns it into a whole argument. I think the movie needed promotion focused on Kara, Krypto, the space adventure, and the actual story. Instead, too much attention went toward Milly and the online arguments around her. That hurt the movie before many people even gave it a fair chance.
