Clayface was never my favorite villain growing up but this take actually makes me curious. going from victim to monster is a classic arc but if they do the psychological side right it could hit hard. R rated horror in the DC universe is a big risk though, hope general audience is ready for something this dark.

I like that they are making Matt Hagen a tragic character instead of just turning him into a monster who shows up and starts attacking people. The part about him wanting his old face and career back makes his motivation easy to understand. I also like the idea that the powers are connected to his loss of identity. That feels very fitting for Clayface because his whole ability is about changing his appearance. Naomi Ackie as Dr. Caitlin Corr also sounds interesting because I can see her being the kind of scientist who thinks she can control something until it becomes too late. I am glad this is R-rated too. Clayface has always had potential for some really uncomfortable body horror, and this sounds like it is actually using that instead of just giving him CGI powers.

The body transformation is what got my attention. Clayface becoming living clay should look disgusting if they really commit to it. I hope they do not make every transformation look too clean with perfect CGI. The ugly stages are probably going to be more interesting than the finished monster.

I also like that Matt starts out as a victim. It gives the character somewhere to go emotionally. He loses his face, gets offered a solution, and then the solution makes everything worse. That is a pretty simple setup, but it works for horror. Tom Rhys Harries is also a good choice for a character who has to carry a movie without relying on Batman. I am curious how much of the movie will focus on his actual acting career before everything falls apart.

 

[Feels so real]

Not sure about comparing Dr Corr to Elizabeth Holmes, feels like a lazy way to describe ambition. give the character her own identity instead of borrowing from real life scandals. Naomi Ackie is talented enough to make this role stand out without that comparison being needed at all.

Feat of Clay episodes from the animated series were so good, glad they mention that as inspiration. that story broke my heart as a kid, Hagen was always more sad than scary to me. hope movie keeps that emotional core instead of turning him into just a rage monster for spectacle.

this looks like the most different DC project in years and I am here for it. body horror plus tragedy plus revenge, sounds like a mix of the fly and a greek tragedy. casting choice makes sense once you watch his previous work, dude has range.

why is every villain origin story now about revenge and losing humanity, feels repetitive across studios lately. still gonna watch it though because clay transformation effects could be visually insane if done right.

I am honestly more interested in the horror side than the DC side here. Clayface is one of those characters where you do not need Batman standing around for the story to work. His powers already give you enough material for a disturbing movie. The idea of him reshaping his body while slowly losing his sense of self could get pretty dark.

What I especially like is the connection between his appearance and his career. He is an actor, so his face is basically part of his livelihood. Losing it is not just cosmetic for him. It affects his entire identity and how people see him. Then the treatment gives him exactly what he wants and takes something else away. That is a solid horror setup. I just hope the movie gives Matt enough time as a normal person before turning him into Clayface. I want to actually feel bad for him before he starts doing terrible things.

Naomi Ackie playing the scientist is probably the casting choice I am most curious about. Dr. Caitlin Corr sounds like she could easily become a boring evil scientist, but the comparison to Elizabeth Holmes makes me think they are going for someone who genuinely believes in what she is doing. That is much more interesting to me.

Matt Hagen also has a strong reason to take the risk. If someone offered me a treatment that could restore my face and my career after something that horrible happened, I can understand why I might ignore the warning signs. The problem is that he gets exactly what he wants in the worst possible way. I like stories where the main character makes a bad decision for a reason that actually makes sense.

The revenge part should be good too. I just hope it stays personal instead of becoming another giant CGI destruction movie.
