This actually happened to my aunt lol not the basement part but the school not doing anything about a violent kid. She almost quit teaching because of it. So I get why this movie exists, teachers are dealing with real stuff and nobody wants to hear it until it becomes a headline. Saoirse Ronan doing dark comedy is not something I expected but honestly she has the face for it, that quiet intensity she brings to everything. Curious how she balances the funny parts with something this messed up morally.

lmaooo the premise alone got me. teacher locks a kid in the basement and things get BETTER for everyone. that is the most honest satire of school systems I have heard in a while


I dont think I can laugh at a missing child storyline even if its dark comedy. maybe im just not the target audience for this one

I like the basic idea because Maria is not presented as some evil person from the start. She sounds like someone who keeps trying to handle a situation that the school refuses to handle. The part that interests me most is what happens after Danny disappears. The other students suddenly doing better creates a very uncomfortable question about whether Maria actually improved the classroom by doing something terrible. I also like that the story does not seem to give her an easy answer. If she confesses, she loses everything. If she stays quiet, she has to live with what she did. Saoirse Ronan is a good choice for this because she can play someone who looks completely normal while slowly becoming more desperate. I would definitely watch this for the dark humor and the moral mess.

I am sold mostly because of the premise. A teacher kidnapping her own student sounds completely ridiculous, but the setup actually gives it a reason. The school keeps ignoring the problem, the parents are in denial, and Maria reaches a point where she makes a terrible choice. I like stories where one bad decision creates more problems instead of magically fixing everything. The classroom becoming peaceful after Danny disappears is especially interesting because it gives Maria a reason to keep lying. She is not just hiding Danny because she wants to avoid punishment. She is also seeing her students succeed and probably telling herself that she did something necessary. That kind of thinking can get very dangerous very quickly. I think this could be a very funny movie if it does not take itself too seriously.

Danny Carter behavior arc from menace to missing person to plot twist is giving me a headache just reading it. but in a good way, sounds like the kind of story that keeps you guessing

as someone who studied education policy this premise hits different, schools genuinely fail teachers when it comes to handling disruptive students and parents in denial. the exaggeration here is doing real commentary work

Saoirse Ronan playing a primary school teacher who kidnaps a child is probably not the casting choice I expected, which is exactly why I am interested. She usually has this very serious presence, so watching her panic while trying to cover up something completely insane could be really funny. I also like that Maria is not described as someone who hates children. She is supposed to care about them, which makes her decision much more disturbing. She believes she is solving one problem, but now she has created another huge one. The classroom becoming better after Danny disappears is probably going to mess with her head too. She gets rewarded for something that should destroy her career and possibly put her in prison. I think the best version of this movie would keep pushing that contradiction until Maria has no idea what kind of person she has become.

This sounds like a European film that got adapted for English audience, the original Swedish novel probably has a totally different tone honestly.

The trailer line alone sold me, one very bad decision, say less.
