Gargoyles really left a mark on animated storytelling. The blend of dark themes and complex character arcs was something that set it apart from other shows at the time. I remember watching it and being fascinated by how it tackled issues that were pretty mature for a kids' show. Greg Weisman's storytelling really created a rich world that felt alive.

It's a shame a live-action reboot didn't pan out. I think a lot of fans were hoping to see the same level of depth translated to a new medium, but it's hard to capture the magic of the original. Do you think there's a way they could have done it justice, or is it better left as a classic?

Finally some good news for once. I was so mad when they announced that live action version back in 2023. Gargoyles is not a franchise that needs a random new team with no connection to Greg Weisman touching it. The whole point of the show was his vision, his writing style, his characters with real depth. Handing it to people outside that circle just felt like a corporate decision with zero heart behind it. I am glad it fell apart before it could damage the reputation of the series. Now if only Disney would actually bring Weisman back for a real continuation of the story instead of starting from zero again. The comic book is nice but many of us want to see it animated with the same voice cast if possible. Fingers crossed for the new series they mentioned.

I read this twice because I could not believe Weisman said he knows nothing about the new series when a voice actor already talked about it publicly. That is strange to me. Either he is being careful with wording for contract reasons or there is some miscommunication happening internally at Disney. Either way I trust his judgment on this franchise more than anyone else involved in past decisions. The comic book route at least keeps things alive creatively without corporate meddling ruining the tone. I just hope whoever ends up handling the next visual adaptation actually understands why fans love this story so much instead of treating it as another property to recycle for profit.

This news made my day a little bit. I remember watching reruns of the original show with my older cousin growing up and it always stuck with me more than most other cartoons from that era because of how mature the writing felt compared to everything else airing at the time. When they announced the live action version years ago I already had a bad feeling about it because these adaptations rarely capture what made the source material work in the first place. Losing the gothic tone and replacing it with generic effects heavy blockbuster style storytelling would have been a huge letdown for longtime fans. I am relieved this got shut down before wasting more time and money. Bring back animation and bring back Weisman properly this time, not just as a consultant they mention occasionally.
