I always found the story of Sado really uncomfortable because there is no clean hero or villain in it. Some dramas make Yeongjo look like a complete monster, but when you read more history stuff, it feels more complicated than that. If Sado really had severe mental problems, then the palace situation must have been terrifying for everybody around him too. At the same time, locking your own son in a rice chest is something people will never stop judging. I think that is why this story still works in dramas today. It feels personal and political at the same time. Also, Jeongjo’s life honestly sounds stressful from beginning to end. Imagine growing up knowing how your father died while trying to survive palace politics yourself.
