Be Thankful You Didn’t Get Emerald Fennell’s Zatanna Movie

Yeah I’m actually relieved it got canceled. Zatanna’s whole thing is backward magic, showbiz confidence, and kicking butt against supernatural threats. She doesn’t sit around having breakdowns, she solves problems with style. Fennell admitting she knew nothing about the character and wasn’t into superheroes is exactly why studios shouldn’t hand big IPs to directors who don’t care. Her version sounds like it would’ve been depressing and completely off-brand. Good thing Zaslav or whoever axed it. Now we can keep hoping for a proper Zatanna movie someday that respects what makes her cool.

This is the best news I’ve heard all week. A dark, nervous-breakdown Zatanna? Are you kidding me? She’s literally one of the most upbeat and capable women in the DC universe. She grew up in magic shows, fights demons, time-traveled, dealt with her dad’s death like a boss. Fennell wanted to make her cry in a corner? Hard pass. I don’t care how talented the director is elsewhere, if you don’t get the character, stay away from it. Thankful this got buried and we’re getting a new Zatanna comic instead. Fingers crossed it’s actually fun.

Honestly I’m laughing at how bad this could’ve been. She straight-up said she doesn’t like superhero movies and didn’t know Zatanna, then wrote a script about a woman having a meltdown. That’s not adaptation, that’s just using the name to tell your own story. Zatanna deserves better than being turned into some grim indie drama character. I’m glad it never happened, even if it was just studio politics that killed it. At least now the character stays intact for future projects. We already have enough dark, miserable takes on heroes.

Wow, dodged a massive bullet there. Zatanna is magic, confidence, top hat and fishnets, not some lady curled up sobbing through a midlife crisis. Fennell basically admitted she was just using the character as a vehicle for her own ideas instead of respecting the source. That’s exactly why so many comic movies fail—directors who don’t care about the comics try to “elevate” them into something they’re not. Good riddance to this version. I’d rather wait years for a real Zatanna film than get stuck with that mess. The new comic series better deliver.

Reading this just makes me angry all over again. Zatanna is strong, clever, and deals with trauma without falling apart. She lost her dad, fought the biggest threats in DC, and still performs with flair. Turning her into a “woman in the middle of a nervous breakdown” is insulting to the character and her fans. Fennell even said nobody would’ve made it, which proves she knew it was way off-base. We’re lucky this got scrapped. I’ll take the upcoming comic over whatever depressing nonsense this would’ve been any day.
