2026 Academy Awards Nominations Get Golden

I feel mixed about these nominations. On one hand, Sinners clearly made a big impact, and I understand why the Academy went all in on it. Sixteen nominations is not random, and Ryan Coogler getting this level of support shows how strong the industry response is. At the same time, I still feel animation is treated like a side dish. KPop Demon Hunters did something new by mixing pop culture, music, and animation in a way that reached a global audience. Getting Animated Feature and Original Song is nice, but missing Score feels unfair when music is such a big part of its identity. Zootopia 2 being here makes sense, but it also feels safe compared to the others. I am more interested in smaller films like Little Amélie or Arco, because they usually get ignored. I will still watch the ceremony, mostly to see if Sinners really sweeps or if there are surprises in acting and screenplay categories.

I am actually excited for Conan O’Brien hosting again. The nominations themselves are fine, but the show needs energy. Last year felt stiff, and Conan usually brings balance without making it childish. As for the list, I think it reflects a strong year overall. Even movies I did not love, I understand why they are here. Best Picture lineup feels full instead of padded. That matters. I also like that casting, editing, and production design are getting more focus in discussions. These people shape movies more than stars do. I will probably predict Sinners for Best Picture, but I would not be mad if something quieter like Sentimental Value surprised everyone. That kind of win would feel earned.

Looking at this list, the first reaction is respect mixed with frustration. Respect because many of these films are well-made. Frustration because the same patterns repeat every year. One film becomes the center, and everything else orbits around it. Sinners is clearly that film. Personally, the strongest parts of the nominations are outside Best Picture. Cinematography, production design, and score show more range and creativity. Animation still feels like an afterthought, even when the work is strong. Elio and Arco took risks that deserve more conversation. Actor categories are solid, but familiar faces dominate again. Newer or quieter performers still struggle to break through. Documentary nominations look interesting, and those films often say more about the world than scripted ones. Watching the ceremony will still be fun, but expectations are tempered. The real excitement usually comes from the debates after the winners are announced, not during the show itself.

Right now, the nominations feel less like a surprise and more like confirmation of trends. Serious drama, familiar faces, and strong campaigns continue to rule. Sinners is clearly positioned as the film to beat, and that shapes how people talk about everything else. Personally, more interest goes to the categories where the outcome feels less locked. Best Score and Best Editing have real tension. Those crafts often get ignored, but they matter a lot. Animation still feels boxed into a single lane. The Academy talks about respecting it, but the structure says otherwise. Some animated films this year showed real storytelling skill, not just visual appeal. Acting categories are fine, but they lean safe. Performances that are quieter or less dramatic rarely get rewarded. The documentary lineup looks promising, and those films deserve more viewers. Overall, the nominations are competent and polished, but they do not feel bold. That is the main issue holding them back.
