If there’s a general rule with Warner Bros CEO David Zaslav, it’s that you should never get him wet or feed him after midnight. He confirmed during an earnings call this morning that he’s pressing forward with Gremlins 3, a film that’s been rumored for decades but has never gotten off the ground. Looks like it’s never been closer to happening until now. Gremlins 3 has never had a RELEASE DATE before: WB thinks they can get it out November 19, 2027. Chris Columbus, who created the concept, will return to produce and direct with Steven Spielberg lording over as executive producer. Joe Dante, who directed the first film and wrote / directed the second, as well as the recent Gremlins cartoon, was not mentioned. As someone whose favorite movie of all time is Gremlins 2, you’d think I’d be over the moon right now. Well, I’m not. I’m very very under the moon. And this is why: my favorite film is Gremlins 2. I really hope Phoebe Cates could come back, even just for a small scene. I’ve always liked her. She had this natural charm that made her stand out without even trying. It would be nice to see her again, maybe just walking through a scene or saying a few lines. I know she’s been away from acting for a long time, but even a short appearance would make me smile. It feels strange to have Gremlins without her.

I think this is an interesting announcement, but I’m cautious. Chris Columbus returning sounds good on paper, but his style is different now. His last few projects felt too safe. Gremlins 2 had personality and chaos, which came from Joe Dante’s creativity. If Dante isn’t involved, I’m afraid the movie will lose that unpredictable charm. Spielberg overseeing the production gives me a little hope, but I would rather have Dante direct or at least consult. Still, after decades of waiting, it’s good that Warner Bros. finally confirmed something instead of endless rumors.

This feels like another studio trying to chase nostalgia without understanding what made the original movies work. Joe Dante gave Gremlins its personality. His sense of satire and weird humor made the sequel stand out. Columbus is talented, but his directing feels cleaner, too polished. Gremlins needs mess and madness. Spielberg being “executive producer” doesn’t mean much these days—he’s attached to dozens of projects like that.

To me, Chris Columbus directing again is the right move. He understands the origin of the Mogwai and the tone of the first film. People forget that without him, there would be no Gremlins. Joe Dante is great, but his sequel was too self-referential. The story needs to go back to basics—less parody, more heart. I just hope the movie uses practical effects instead of relying too much on CGI.

I don’t see the point of bringing Gremlins back after so many years. The magic was in its time period—the 1980s atmosphere, the puppetry, the mix of horror and Christmas comedy. Today’s audiences might not respond the same way. Even if Columbus and Spielberg are involved, the charm might not translate. I’d rather they focus on continuing Secrets of the Mogwai than trying to revive something that ended perfectly fine.
