Modders Create Futurama Sequel To Simpsons Hit & Run

Since it’s been around forever, The Simpsons has a long history with video games, going back to the 8-bit era. There have been highs (the arcade game) and lows (most of everything else), but the one thing most can agree on is that one of the best Simpsons games, if not THE best, was Simpsons Hit & Run, released in 2003 on then-modern machines PS2, Gamecube and XBox, as well as the PC. At its core it was a GTA clone, but it wore its skin well, providing a fully featured sandbox Springfield to mess around in, sprinkled with lots of authentic humor from the show. Unfortunately, Simpsons Hit & Run has never been re-released, leaving fans of the game to keep the flame alive themselves through mods and patches designed to get the PC version working on modern machines. This also means folks are studying the code, seeing if they can modify it in any way for funsies…and one massive funsie just appeared over the weekend, A team of hackers calling themselves Slurm Team announced Futurama Hit & Run, a “sequel” to Simpsons Hit & Run starring the cast and setting from Groening’s other hit series. (There was a […]

I think it’s amazing that a fan team is doing something like this. Futurama deserves a game that really reflects its world, and using the Hit & Run framework is smart because it already has the open-world style that fits the series’ humor. I’m curious how detailed New New York will be in terms of side missions and locations, since the original game balanced main story and exploration very well. The fact that it’s free makes it even better; it feels like a gift to the community. I can imagine racing through the streets in different vehicles and seeing the show’s characters pop up in funny ways. I hope the final version is long enough to feel like a full game and not just a demo, but this is a great start.

My first reaction was skepticism, but after seeing gameplay clips, I am impressed. Recreating the physics and open-world mechanics of a 2003 game is challenging, and adding Futurama’s sci-fi aesthetic on top shows skill. It seems like the team understands what made Hit & Run fun: freedom, humor, and hidden surprises. I would like to see more voice lines or dialogue from the characters because that would make it feel even more authentic. The attention to vehicles and costumes is a nice touch.

I think the timing is perfect. There are so many classic games that never got proper sequels, and fans are now taking matters into their own hands. Futurama Hit & Run is a good example of how modding can breathe new life into old games. The open-world missions, races, and collectibles make it more than just nostalgia—it feels like a proper game in its own right. I hope Slurm Team keeps documenting their progress because it could inspire other fan projects. It also shows that dedication and creativity can match what professional studios produce.

I am curious about technical details. Will the mod fully replace all original textures and models, or are some Springfield assets still visible? How smooth is the gameplay? Four story missions sound promising, but I hope there are enough side activities to keep it engaging. From a player perspective, replay value is important in sandbox games, so hidden items, different vehicles, and character costumes are a good start. I also wonder if they will add Easter eggs from the series that hardcore fans will recognize. It could become a benchmark for fan-made open-world games.
