In 2017, Joey Drew Studios introduced Bendy And The Ink Machine to the world. Inspired by the bioshock series, the game was a first-person horror puzzler about a retired animator who receives an unexplained invitation calling him back to the studio he once worked for. When he arrives, he finds things VERY different…no one’s around, except for the paranormal presence of the Ink Machine, which is going to make life hard for him. First released episodically, Bendy And The Ink Machine was eventually compiled into a full game and released that way in 2018. It became an indie sensation, gathering fans, awards, merchandise and even a feature film that is still in development. How could the studio NOT release a sequel? Bendy and the Dark Revival came out in 2022. Once again an animator is trapped in their own studio, at the mercy of their own creations, but this time it’s Aubrey, a woman. “Solve puzzles, sneak through shadows, battle monstrous enemies, and confront the all-powerful Ink Demon as you search for an escape,” says Joey Drew Studios. It took a while, but a physical version of Bendy and the Dark Revival is officially in the works. A Fight for Survival […]

Physical releases are important for preservation and for collectors. Dark Revival was a good follow-up, expanding on the original's ideas. The description confirms what I liked about it – the emphasis on stealth and puzzle-solving over just combat. The Ink Demon is a fantastic antagonist, and knowing there's a physical version coming makes it even better for those of us who prefer to have a tangible copy. It's a shame about no Xbox version, but you cannot please everyone. The third game is definitely something to look forward to. They are building a strong franchise here, and it is a smart choice to continue investing in the physical market.

From a technical and artistic standpoint, the world of Bendy is a masterclass in atmospheric design. The way the ink permeats every aspect, from the environment to the creatures and even the player's abilities, creates a cohesive and deeply unsettling experience. The evolution of the gameplay mechanics, incorporating upgrades derived from the ink itself, suggests a thoughtful integration of narrative and system. I am particularly interested in the game's exploration of the blurring line between reality and animation, as this thematic depth is what elevates a horror game beyond mere frights. The move to a physical release also ensures a certain level of archival quality, which is crucial for works of this artistic caliber. It is a well-deserved recognition of the series' impact.

I appreciate the continuation of the Bendy narrative. The initial game created a strong foundation, and Dark Revival appears to build upon that effectively by introducing new gameplay elements and a fresh protagonist. The mention of 'upgrading your powers and weapon with the mysterious abilities of the ink itself' sounds promising, suggesting a deeper combat and progression system. The focus on uncovering secrets and understanding Audrey's identity within the studio adds a compelling layer to the horror. It is good to see indie success stories like this expand into physical releases, as it provides more options for players. I am optimistic about the future of this series.

Honestly, I am just glad they are putting Dark Revival on a physical disc. Digital-only releases are a nightmare for people with limited internet or those who just like to own what they buy. The first game was a unique experience, and the sequel kept that strange, unsettling feeling. I like that it is a fight for survival and that you have to use your wits. The creature designs are always something to look forward to in these games; they are genuinely creepy. Pre-ordering will be important if they are making a limited number. I am looking forward to getting my hands on it this fall.

From a historical perspective, the Bendy series represents a fascinating intersection of classic animation aesthetics with modern horror game design. The transition from an episodic release to a compiled full game, and now a physical release for its sequel, illustrates a successful adaptation to various market demands. The narrative focus on Audrey's journey through a decaying studio, facing her own creations, is a compelling twist on the traditional horror formula. The mechanics of using the ink for power upgrades align perfectly with the game's visual identity. The continued development of Secrets of the Machine confirms the franchise's longevity and its significant impact on the indie horror landscape. This is a series that consistently delivers on its unique premise.
