Usually when you see a Warhammer video game, it belongs to a certain genre: action, tactical or RPG. You do not typically expect to see this brand attached to something like car combat, but that’s what just happened today: Speed Freeks is the name of a title that has officially launched on Steam after months of Early Access beta testing. We’re not sure what the story premise is behind this…there doesn’t seem to be one. It’s simply a Warhammer version of Twisted Metal that takes place within its worlds. “Adrenaline-fueled combat racing in the brutal Warhammer 40,000 universe!” says publisher Wired Productions and developer Caged Element. “Drive ferocious vehicles equipped with powerful weapons and abilities into a full-throttle battle to the death. Speed Freeks is a fresh, Ork-y take on vehicle combat that you’ve never seen before. WAAAGH!” Oh yeah, and the game was planned at one point to have microtransactions, but as of Version 1.0 they’ve been ripped out of the game. You’re welcome! Player-hosted games: Create private or public lobbies with custom settings. New Vehicle – Trukk: A havoc-wreaking ambush vehicle with a fearsome amount of firepower and rowdy orks in the back. As someone who’s played every Warhammer 40K strategy title since Dawn of War, this was honestly unexpected. I didn’t think I’d be into a racing-combat game with orks screaming and driving trucks, but it works. The game doesn’t pretend to be deep or story-driven, which is fine. Sometimes I just want to blow things up without reading five pages of lore. I also appreciate they ditched the microtransactions. That would’ve killed the fun for me. Good start for something different in the Warhammer universe.

This is exactly the kind of chaos I didn’t know I needed. The Orks fit this genre so naturally, it almost feels like they were made for it. I love the Free Roam mode – it lets me explore the maps and get better at handling each vehicle. It’s fun in a silly, arcade way that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Plus, being able to customize my Ork? Perfect.

What I love is that I don’t need to read a guide just to play. I jumped in, picked a vehicle, and figured things out by doing. It’s colorful, it’s loud, and I don’t have to remember unit counters or stats. Not every Warhammer game has to be serious or complex. This is a fun break from all that. I’ll be showing it to my little brother too.

The customization system is what keeps me coming back. Dressing up my Ork avatar feels rewarding, and it’s not just cosmetic. I also like experimenting with the alternative weapons. It’s got more depth than people might think. That said, it could use a short tutorial. I had to figure a lot out by trial and error. Still, I’m glad they launched it at a discount.
