“Thread of Lies” is a 2014 Korean film, categorized as High School, Teens, Youth, Crime, Mystery, and Family; based on a bestselling novel; and streaming on Viki. SUMMARY: Why did my sister commit suicide? She didn’t even leave a note. ♦ We Didn’t Know She Wanted to Die! In “Thread of Lies”, Cheon-Ji is a lovely, quiet child who gets along with her mother and her sister. She is 14 years old, goes to school every day, does homework and housework, and seldom complains or asks for anything. So when asked her mother, Hyun-Sook, to buy her an MP3 player, her mom told her she couldn’t afford it. Other priority bills needed to be paid. However, if she were patient, she could get the MP3 player later. Cheon-Ji didn’t object or whine about not having her way. She just hung her head and accepted that her mom couldn’t get it.

I watched Thread of Lies a couple of years ago, and while I think the acting was solid, I don’t think the film handled the topic of suicide as well as some people say. It gave us the cause, yes—bullying—but I felt like it stayed on the surface. Real life is messier. People don’t always take their lives for one clear reason. I also think the mom and sister were a bit too slow in realizing what had happened. I’m not blaming them, but their reaction felt scripted. That being said, I’m glad the article linked this to Mental Health Month. Anything that keeps people talking about suicide prevention is useful. But this film didn’t shake me the way others have.

When I first saw Thread of Lies, I sat in silence for a long time after the credits rolled. It’s not just about a girl who took her life—it’s about a family that suddenly has to face a truth they didn’t want to see. I remember Cheon-Ji’s face, her small voice, how easily everyone overlooked her pain. This movie doesn’t scream at you. It whispers. That’s why it hit me so deeply. The MP3 player scene broke my heart. Her disappointment was so quiet, so final. As a teacher, I’ve met students like her—soft-spoken, kind, never complaining. They hide everything. I think the film made me more aware of that. Thank you for writing this. You didn’t just review the movie—you honored it.

This movie was painful. But it's a topic that needs to be discussed.
