The July 2025 line up from Oni Press brings a wave of dark genre experimentation, multiversal comedy, and thoughtful sci-fi, underscoring the publisher’s dedication to original storytelling. Anchored by new entries in horror anthologies and significant creator-led projects, this month’s titles balance tonal extremes, offering grim introspection and absurdist spectacle in equal measure. Horror and the EC Legacy Reimagined Launching this month, Catacomb of Torment begins a new horror anthology hosted by the grotesque “Tormentor,” continuing the EC Comics-inspired approach seen in Epitaphs from the Abyss. Writers John Arcudi, Marguerite Bennett, and Matt Kindt headline the 40-page debut, which includes three new tales and a remastered EC classic. Simultaneously, Blood Type #2 continues EC’s modern revival with a sardonic vampire tale by Corinna Bechko and Andrea Sorrentino, blending tropical satire with creeping dread. The final issue of Plague House also arrives in July, concluding Michael W. Conrad and Dave Chisholm’s haunted desert saga. It dovetails with Dark Regards #3, where a fictionalized black metal origin story veers into surreal territory. Across these titles, Oni’s horror slate expands genre boundaries while drawing stylistic inspiration from comics’ past. The return of The Sixth Gun after so long is definitely the highlight for me. It was a strong series, and the premise of Battle for the Six exploring its legacy in a prestige format has my attention.

Rick and Morty getting their first big comic event? Of course they are. Rick and Morty vs. The Universe sounds like it will be the usual level of chaotic absurdity. Honestly, I'm more intrigued by Benjamin. A resurrected science fiction author caught up in a secret society trying to reboot imagination? That's a concept I can get behind. The contrast between the over-the-top humor of Rick and Morty and something more cerebral like Benjamin shows a good range in their sci-fi offerings. I'll probably check out both, though I have a feeling my brain will thank me more for the latter.

It's interesting to see Oni Press consistently leaning into genre experimentation. The way they're blending horror with satire in Blood Type and exploring metafictional elements in Dark Regards suggests a publisher that isn't afraid to take risks. Even in the licensed properties, like the cosmic dance battle in Adventure Time, there seems to be a willingness to push beyond the expected. This focus on unique combinations and creator-driven narratives is what makes their solicitations consistently worth a look.

The explicit connection to EC Comics with both Catacomb of Torment and the continuation of Blood Type is a smart move. Those classic horror comics had a real impact, and it's great to see that legacy being acknowledged and reimagined for a modern audience. Including remastered classics is a particularly nice touch for long-time fans like myself. It shows a respect for the medium's history.

I’m always drawn to anthology series, so Catacomb of Torment is definitely on my radar. The promise of different writers and artists tackling new horror tales under the guidance of a new host sounds like a recipe for some unpredictable and potentially terrifying stories. Plus, the bonus of a remastered EC classic is a great incentive to pick up the first issue.
