Well Go USA has announced it’ll be distributing the new indie thriller Cold Wallet on digital platforms this Friday. The movie will also enjoy a limited run in select theaters. The film is about a group of Redditors who got caught up in the crypto hype of the early 2020s, lost all their money, and now want revenge. So they track down the dwelling of the man who swindled them all with plans to rob him blind. You know the recent trend of heist movies that have the burglars turn out to be the unfortunate ones and the person they chose to steal from being more evil than they are? This is another one. “When the home invasion takes a turn for the worst, they become victims in a sadistic game,” says the logline. Cold Wallet has a more stacked cast than most low-budget film of its type. It stars Raul Castillo (Smile 2), Melonie Diaz (Charmed, as in the new one), Tony Cavalero (The Righteous Gemstones), Josh Brener (Silicon Valley) and Zoe Winters (Succession). I love a good heist movie, especially when things go sideways. The idea of a bunch of Redditors trying to pull off a revenge robbery is hilarious and oddly believable. And of course, in classic fashion, they’re probably messing with someone way out of their league. The cast actually looks solid for an indie film, too. Raul Castillo was great in Smile, and I liked Tony Cavalero in The Righteous Gemstones. If the writing is sharp and the tension is real, this could be a fun little thriller. Definitely checking this one out.

A thriller based on the crypto boom and bust? Now, that’s an angle I haven’t seen before. The whole period of people throwing their savings into digital coins and getting scammed was basically a real-life horror story. Seeing that play out in a crime film could be pretty compelling. Hopefully, it captures some of the desperation and chaos of that era instead of just using it as a gimmick.

Movies where criminals get in over their heads are always entertaining because there’s this mix of suspense and schadenfreude. You know things are going to go terribly wrong, but you’re just waiting to see how bad it gets. If Cold Wallet leans into the psychological horror aspect and really makes the audience feel trapped with these characters, it could be something special.

Melonie Diaz and Raul Castillo in a thriller? I’m in. Diaz is underrated, and Castillo has that quiet intensity that works really well in tense situations. Indie thrillers can be hit-or-miss, but when you’ve got a strong cast, the odds of a good performance go way up. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for this one.
