Sony's Until Dawn Movie Takes Liberties With Game's Plot

Of all the game-to-screen announcements Sony has made, a horror film based on Until Dawn made the most sense. The game, after all, was made in the fashion of an interactive movie, and a tribute to survival horror pictures. Your goal was to keep as many characters in the story’s cast alive as possible before dawn broke. It was possible to rescue all or none. All they’d have to do to make a movie is Xerox the plot of the game, right? ….One would think so, but director David F. Sandberg appeared in a sneak peek video today where he revealed the movie’s going to be totally different. “The movie, it has sort of the same tone and the same vibe but it expands upon the universe,” he said. “One of the creative things the game did is that people make different choices and die in different ways….” So, inspired by that, the Until Dawn movie has a new premise where the characters get to die over and over and try again — yep, it’s a time loop movie. A group of young people find a haunted house, mess with an hourglass on the wall they shouldn’t have messed with […]

I’m not thrilled about this. The beauty of Until Dawn was its branching storylines and the weight of the player’s choices. Turning it into a time loop movie feels like they’re tossing that out. The game’s narrative was already cinematic—why not just adapt it faithfully? This “meta” angle makes it sound like they’re trying to reinvent the wheel unnecessarily.

I understand why some fans might be worried about the liberties being taken, but I’m intrigued. A straightforward adaptation might feel predictable to those who played the game, while a time loop concept adds layers of tension and unpredictability. If Sandberg handles it right, this could be a standout horror movie that pays homage to the game while doing its own thing.

This decision is risky. On one hand, I appreciate the attempt to expand the Until Dawn universe. A direct adaptation might not have had the same impact, especially since the game’s strength was in its interactivity. However, changing the premise so drastically could alienate fans who wanted to see their favorite moments on the big screen. I hope they strike a balance.

I just hope they don’t pull a Resident Evil on this. Those movies sidelined the game’s beloved characters to make room for a new Mary Sue lead, and it completely lost the essence of the original story. If Until Dawn introduces some random, overpowered character who overshadows the original cast, it’ll be such a disappointment. The characters in the game were flawed, relatable, and central to the story—they deserve the same treatment in the movie. Fingers crossed they get it right.

I’ve played Until Dawn several times, and while I understand the frustration of fans who wanted a faithful adaptation, I think this could be a creative way to bring the story to new audiences. The time loop concept might actually reflect the game’s mechanics, where players replay sections to see alternate outcomes. If done well, it could feel like a fresh take on the same themes of consequence and survival. I’m also intrigued by the idea of different horror genres within the loops—it could give the movie a unique identity while still staying true to the game’s spirit. That said, I hope they don’t lose the heart of the original story or the tension between the characters, which was one of the game’s greatest strengths.
