Actress Olivia Youngers, most recently seen as Riggs in Paramount+’s Star Trek: Picard, has been cast in a lead role for James Kerwin’s in-production mystery thriller film, Contre-Coup. Contre-Coup is such a mystery that we barely know what it’s even about. Basically, according to the official description, it “tells the story of a brilliant but troubled particle theorist desperately searching for answers as to why the only life he knows — and the only woman he’s ever loved — are disappearing before his eyes.” Literally, or figuratively? Depends on what kind of movie this is. Kerwin wrote the script and will also direct. “I’d been kicking around the idea for a spiritual successor to my last feature,‘ Yesterday Was a Lie, ’for a few years,” explains Kerwin. “Contre-Coup is a sci-fi-leaning film that deals with some weighty and timely social issues. We used the pandemic to dive into the screenplay and secure development funding, but then the industry strikes hit. Now that our business is ramping up again, we’re back to assembling a team of solid talent for a shoot next year. Ultimately, I think the delays helped us in the long run.” The feature will also star Rekha Sharma […]

I am so ready for this! Olivia Youngers in a thriller? Count me in! I loved her in Star Trek: Picard—her character Riggs was a refreshing presence in that show. The mysterious plot of Contre-Coup is just my vibe. I like when films leave you with more questions than answers. The idea of someone losing the love of their life and their reality all at once is so intriguing, especially in a sci-fi context. The social issues they’re going to tackle sound like they could be really relevant, and the cast is stacked with talent. This could be one of those under-the-radar gems that everyone talks about after it drops.

Hmm, I don’t know. The plot sounds kind of confusing, honestly. A scientist losing everything and everyone around him? That’s a little vague for me. I get that it’s a mystery, but I’m not sure if I’m sold just yet. It could end up being one of those films where the concept sounds better than the execution. I also don’t really know what “sci-fi-leaning” means in this context—could be good, or it could just get weird. I’ll wait for more details.

Olivia Youngers is awesome in Star Trek: Picard, and I’m excited to see her in a different kind of role. The plot sounds like it’s going to keep you on your toes, and I’m always down for a good mystery. I love that the film has a sci-fi angle but also deals with real-world issues.

I’m mainly excited because Olivia Youngers is in it. She was such a standout in Star Trek: Picard, so I’m curious to see how she does in this. The plot sounds pretty strange, but I think that could work—sometimes the more mysterious, the better! I’m all for anything that’s a little different and makes you think. The whole sci-fi vibe plus the social issues thing has me interested. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
