Fifty years ago Wisconsin residents Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson decided to develop a new type of game in their spare time, which would merge fantasy with a lot of math to give storytelling a new dimension. Today Dungeons & Dragons is one of the most well-known brands in the world, having finally conquered its 1980s “game for outcasts” stigma to become a mainstream pasttime. Naturally current rights holders Wizards of the Coast are putting a lot out there in 2024 to celebrate the 50th anniversary, chief among them the first major revision of the Player’s Handbook in ten years. But you can also get….a vinyl record. The album’s official title is “DUNGEONS & DRAGONS — Bardic Inspiration: A Musical Journey through the Forgotten Realms.” Perhaps it’s not as essential as the Handbook, but it’s neat in its own right. Says WOTC, “The album presents 12 original tracks created to evoke iconic locations within D&D’s most famous setting, the Forgotten Realms. Vinyl records? Really? I get that D&D is a big deal now, but this feels a bit gimmicky. I mean, how many people are actually going to listen to a D&D album? I think I’ll stick with the Player’s Handbook for now.

OMG, this is like, the coolest thing ever! I can’t believe D&D is getting a vinyl! The idea of a choir and unique instruments is super intriguing. I’m totally getting this for my collection! Just wish they’d let us hear a sneak peek.

This sounds awesome! D&D has changed so much over the years, and I love that they’re embracing the nostalgia with a vinyl album. I can totally see myself jamming out to these tracks while prepping for a campaign. Just wish they had some samples to check out before buying

A D&D vinyl album? Yes, please! I'm super curious about the musical direction they took. I think it’s a great way to merge the worlds of tabletop gaming and music. I just hope the tracks live up to the hype!

I think this is a fun idea, but I’m not sure if I’d buy it. I love the idea of D&D, but a vinyl album doesn’t really appeal to me. I’d rather just listen to some fantasy movie soundtracks if I’m in that mood.
