Historical K-dramas are very popular and many people are fans for various reasons. These are my reasons. EDUCATIONAL: Learn the history of Korea. The Korean movies and TV shows are a retelling of actual historical events and people, or a creation of fictional stories weaved from ancient Korea’s history, culture, folklore, and traditions. ENTERTAINING: The gripping storylines incorporate intense palace intrigue and treacherous political power struggles. Heartbreaking relationships include serious love triangle romances or forbidden love (such as love between a noble person and a commoner or a slave). GENRE VARIETY: There are various genres such as delightful rom-coms, suspenseful crime, and mystery, time travel, supernatural or fantasy K-dramas ~ all in historical settings of one of the three kingdoms. COSTUMES AND SCENERY: Many fans appreciate the Hanbok costumes or other traditional attire of the different historical periods, plus the beautiful scenery. South Korea’s filming locations include historical sites, temples, palaces, etc., as well as breathtaking natural wonders (waterfalls, flower fields, mountains, etc.) that are popular tourist destinations. Are any of these good for beginners? Maybe something with a simple plot and a clear good-versus-evil storyline? "Chuno" with the slave hunters sounds cool, but would it be confusing if I haven't seen many historical dramas before? Any recommendations for a newbie like me? Thanks!

Ooh, hidden gem K-dramas? Love that! Has anyone seen any of these on the list? I'm curious about "Diary of a Night Watchman" – is the romance cheesy or swoon-worthy? Let me know your thoughts on these before I dive in! And if you have any other historical K-drama recommendations, share them too! The more, the merrier!

Awesome list! I love recommendations with variety. "Chuno" for action, "Night Watchman" for fantasy, and "Jung Yi" for a strong female lead – perfect for different moods. I'll probably multitask and watch "Chuno" while I do some chores, then settle in for a proper "Night Watchman" marathon this weekend. Thanks for helping me fill my K-drama queue!

I've seen "The Fugitive of Joseon" and "Jung Yi, Goddess of Fire" – they're both fantastic! Choi Won's struggle to save his daughter in "Fugitive" is so heartwarming, and Moon Geun-Young is incredible as the determined Jung Yi. Definitely recommend those two.

I was a newbie when I watched “Chuno” and had no problem keeping up. This guy only became a slave hunter because he wanted to find the woman he loved. She was a slave. He was a nobleman in the beginning but lost his wealth because the woman's brother (also a slave) burned down his house and escaped with his sister. They thought he had been killed in the fire. The storyline unfolded beautifully. Plus there was a lot of action!
