Nintendo Switch Online Goes Back To Game Boy's Roots

Oddly Nintendo Switch Online did not launch its Game Boy section with the earliest staples of the handheld. It took until today for a good chunk of the launch lineup to make an appearance. Say hello to Super Mario Land, Alleyway and Baseball. Super Mario Land is pretty simple, with only twelve levels, no saving progress and no way to warp between them. But I’ve got a soft spot for it. It manages to deliver the full Mario experience on late 80s handheld technology with no enhancements or anything, and for that it deserves some appreciation. Plus it’s weird even for a Mario game, taking place in a completely different world with a totally different princess (who wouldn’t be seen again for another 11 years). Alleyway is…Breakout. It’s Nintendo’s Breakout knockoff. And that’s all it is — you don’t even get the enhancements Arkanoid introduced to the genre like power-up pills or boss battles. They make attempts to mix it up every so often by introducing scrolling blocks, but that’s

I've always had a deep appreciation for the classics, so seeing Super Mario Land finally on Nintendo Switch Online is a real treat. I remember playing it on my old Game Boy and being amazed at how they managed to capture the essence of a Mario game in such a limited format. The simplicity is part of its charm, and the fact that it’s a completely different world with new characters makes it stand out in the Mario series. As for Alleyway and Baseball, they might seem basic by today’s standards, but they’re great examples of the pure, uncomplicated fun that early handheld games provided. It’s important to recognize and preserve these roots.

I think it’s great that Nintendo is adding these old Game Boy games to the Switch Online library. Super Mario Land was one of my first games, and I have fond memories of playing it. Sure, it’s simple, but that’s what makes it perfect for a quick gaming session. Alleyway and Baseball might not be as exciting, but they’re a nice way to show how far games have come. Sometimes, it’s fun to go back and play these straightforward, uncomplicated games. They’re a good way to relax and enjoy a piece of gaming history.

From a historical perspective, adding these early Game Boy games to Nintendo Switch Online is a fantastic decision. Super Mario Land, Alleyway, and Baseball were crucial in establishing the handheld gaming market. Super Mario Land’s technical achievements on the original Game Boy hardware are remarkable, and its unique setting adds an interesting twist to the Mario lore. Alleyway, despite being a Breakout clone, and Baseball, in its simplicity, showcase the era’s gaming landscape. Including these titles not only honors the legacy of the Game Boy but also educates new gamers about the origins of portable gaming.
