Penguin Random House Announces Line Of Baldur's Gate 3 Books

Expanding the lore of Baldur's Gate 3 through books sounds like a fantastic move. The world Larian has crafted is rich with detail, and I can imagine how deeper insights into the characters and settings could enhance our understanding of the game. Especially given how much choice and consequence plays into the narrative, it’ll be interesting to see how they expand on the stories of characters like Astarion or Lae'zel.

Books can offer a different pacing and depth compared to the game's real-time decisions, allowing for exploration of themes that might only be hinted at in dialogue. I'm wondering if they'll focus more on character backstories or if it will get into the events happening outside of the player's direct experience. What are you hoping to see in these new stories?

I think starting with Astarion is the safest choice because he is probably the most popular character from the game. I already know many fans are going to buy the audiobook just because Neil Newbon is narrating it himself. That part honestly sounds more exciting to me than the physical book. I also like that they picked the years before the game because there is still a lot they can explore with Cazador and the abuse Astarion went through. The game gave enough hints without showing everything directly.

I am happy they got T. Kingfisher for this because her writing style fits dark fantasy really well. Astarion’s story can easily become too edgy if the writer is not careful, but I think she can balance the serious parts with personality. I also appreciate that Stephen Rooney helped with the book because sometimes game novels feel disconnected from the original characters.

The audiobook casting is honestly smart marketing. Neil Newbon already has a huge fanbase after BG3. I know people who normally never listen to audiobooks but will buy this one immediately.

The cookbook made me laugh a little with the “Romanceable” dishes. That definitely sounds like something Larian would approve. I probably will not buy the notepad though. That one feels random to me compared to the rest of the lineup.

I honestly expected Shadowheart to get the first novel, not Astarion. She feels more connected to the main story overall. But I understand why they chose him because he became the breakout character online. Every time Baldur’s Gate 3 trends somewhere, half the posts are about Astarion.

What interests me more is the timeline. A prequel during his servitude could become very dark if they stay faithful to the lore. I hope they do not soften everything just to make it easier for casual readers. One reason people liked his storyline in the game was because it dealt with trauma in a serious way while still letting him be sarcastic and entertaining.

The coloring book is probably going to sell surprisingly well. The art direction in BG3 is already strong, so line art versions of the companions and monsters actually make sense to me.
