“First Lady” is a 2025 Viki Original Korean drama, 12 episodes, categorized as a Political Thriller. Memorable Quote: “You didn’t just betray me—you rewrote the story I built for both of us.” SUMMARY: You helped your husband reach the top, and when he got there, he asked for a divorce. Typical male. Or …??? … maybe not.

The daughter is the only one I sympathize with. Hyun Ji-Yoo wanted to study abroad, but her mother only cared about how it would affect the election. Then she found out about her father’s affair, and her mother asked her to stay quiet. That is not what a parent should do. She grew up seeing her mother sacrifice and her father cheat. I think the writers used the daughter to show how corruption and ambition can destroy a family. I like how her character asks the honest questions that adults avoid.

I like dramas that mix family and politics. What stood out to me was how Cha Soo Yeon sacrificed her career for her husband, but she did not get any gratitude. Instead, she was asked for a divorce right after he reached the top. This made me think about how women’s labor and loyalty are often treated as tools for men’s ambitions. I do not believe she was only a victim though. She knew about his affair and chose to stay silent because she wanted the political image to stay clean. That was her decision, and it makes her part of the system of lies. The show seems to suggest that once you accept dirty politics, you cannot expect personal loyalty either. I rate it 7 out of 10 because while the drama kept me interested, the story sometimes felt repetitive.

For me, “First Lady” is less about romance and more about power. Hyun Min Cheol came from a difficult childhood, and I understand why he was so ambitious. He wanted to escape poverty and gain respect. But once he reached the presidency, he dropped the woman who helped him climb. That is a common story in politics: loyalty is temporary, power is permanent. The divorce request during the celebration was very symbolic. It shows how fragile personal relationships become when power is the only goal.

I do not think Cha Soo Yeon is innocent. She gave up her political dreams, yes, but she also accepted her husband’s affair. She told her daughter to hide it. That means she cared more about image than honesty. Maybe she thought she was protecting her family, but really she was protecting the presidency. If she wanted to be strong, she should have built her own career instead of depending on him. I think the drama is trying to show that silence can be as damaging as betrayal.

I loved Eugene in “The Penthouse,” so I came here for her acting. She did not disappoint. She played Cha Soo Yeon with elegance but also weakness. Sometimes I got frustrated with her, but that is what made her realistic. Not every strong woman fights back. Some endure, some compromise. That makes her more human. I also liked Park Seo-Kyung as the daughter. She brought fresh energy to the heavy political story.

I'm three episodes in and wow, this show is way more layered than the premise suggests. The husband's motivations aren't as one-dimensional as that opening makes it seem, and the First Lady herself has some pretty questionable moves that made me question whose side I'm supposed to be on. Has anyone else found themselves sympathizing with both of them at different points, or am I just being manipulated by good writing?

Finally got around to finishing this last week and wow, the divorce twist hits completely different once you realize she was playing her own game the whole time. The political maneuvering in episodes 8-10 is chef's kiss, and that quote takes on a whole new meaning when you understand who's actually doing the rewriting. Has anyone else picked up on the hints they planted about her connections in the first few episodes, or did that part blindside you like it did me?
