Alex in Street Fighter 6: Combos Are Fine, Cousin Marriage? Not So Much

Alex Winger's return is definitely a big deal, and it’s wild to see Capcom throw in such quirky lore details! The cousin marriage thing really adds an unexpected layer to the character, which feels very Street Fighter. I mean, we’re already used to some bizarre backstories, right?

While it’s fun to focus on the mechanics and combos, I can't help but appreciate the character-driven narratives that keep things fresh. What do you think about how this weird twist affects Alex’s popularity among players? Do you think it’ll impact how people view him in the competitive scene?

I was so excited about Alex's return, only for me to be turned off. They ruined a likable character. But there's nothing I can do, the writer is Japanese, and Japanese writers really love causing incest.

Capcom should be ashamed. How do you look at Alex’s backstory and think “yeah let’s make him knock up the infant he babysat.” That’s not bold writing, that’s lazy and gross. They could have made Patricia a childhood friend from the neighborhood or something normal. Instead they went full Alabama. Every time someone says “it’s just fiction” I want to ask if they’d be okay dating their actual cousin they changed diapers for. No? Then why defend it here. The moveset is cool, I like the wrestling stuff, but I can’t look at Alex the same anymore. Ruined a character I liked since New Generation. They need to patch the story or retcon it fast. 158 words.

Capcom trolling us on purpose at this point. They know exactly what they did. Bring back a fan favorite, give him cool new stuff, then drop the “he married the baby he held” bomb and sit back with popcorn. The internet did the rest. French fry hair was a problem five years ago, now we’re at cousin pregnancy. Progression of chaos. I’m not even mad, it’s hilarious. Alex still plays great—mixups, command grabs, super arts look nasty. I’ll keep labbing him while everyone else argues ethics in the comments. Life is short, might as well laugh at video game lore gone wrong.

This lore makes me sad more than anything. Alex was always the hopeful guy who wanted to make his master proud. Now his story ends with him marrying someone he basically helped raise from birth. It kills the inspiration he used to have. Feels like they wanted shock value instead of good character development. Moveset is fun, wrestling theme works well, but the heart is gone. I used to love playing him in III because he felt real and grounded. Now he just feels like a meme character. Capcom could have done so much better. Bring back the simple wrestler who fights for family honor, not… this.

I can’t stop laughing at how fast the Alabama jokes took over. One day Alex is back with Kenny Omega mocap, next day he’s the patron saint of “we’re all related here.” “Alex Winger: because some families take game night too seriously.” The memes are ruthless—fake family photos, banjo remixes, everything. Capcom created a monster. Western fans went nuclear while Japan just vibes. It’s cultural clash comedy at its finest. I’m still picking him up because the wrestling moves feel amazing. Jokes aside, he’s fun to play.

I play fighting games a lot, so I was ready to talk about Alex’s tools and matchups. Instead, I ended up reading about his story and I just felt confused. For me, the problem is not only that they are cousins. It is the fact that he knew her since she was a baby. That changes everything in my head. I cannot see it as a normal romance. It feels like a family bond that should not change later. I still like Alex as a fighter. His wrestling style looks strong and simple, which I enjoy. I think I will still use him in matches. But every time I see his story scenes, I will probably skip them. I just want to focus on gameplay. It is strange because Capcom did many good things here, but this one choice is too distracting for me.

I am not even a competitive player, I just enjoy the characters. So when I saw this, I focused more on the story than the gameplay. I tried to think about what the writers wanted, but I could not find a good reason. It does not add depth for me. It just makes things uncomfortable. I think they wanted something dramatic, but it went in the wrong direction. Alex used to feel like a simple and honest character. Now he feels strange to me. I do not hate him, but I do not feel the same connection anymore. His moves still look cool, especially the grapples, but the story changed how I see him. I think they should have kept Patricia as family only. That would be enough to show his emotional side.
