Video game cover album publisher GameChops has just unveiled the third in the “Zelda & Jazz” series, which is what it sounds like — remixes of familiar tunes from throughout the Legend of Zelda series in a cool jazzy tempo. The first two albums were created by “The Deku Trio” an animated Hylian band, and they’ve returned to lay down the tracks for the third, with help from series creators, GameChops founder Chris Davidson and Chillhop’s Rob Araujo. In Zelda & Jazz III, all the songs will be lifted from the most recent mainline titles, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. You’ll get jazz renditions of the TOTK main theme, the stables, the wasteland, Korok Forest, Lurelin Village, Sidons Theme and many more. Featured tracks are composed by Manaka Kataoka, Yasuaki Iwata, Tsukasa Usui, Hajime Wakai, Maasa Miyoshi, and Masato Ohashi. “I became an instant fan of Rob’s forward-thinking piano arrangements after meeting him,” says Davidson. “After bonding over our mutual love of The Legend of Zelda games, we decided to collaborate on a jazz band focused on mellow, intricate arrangements of the iconic soundtracks. I listened to the first Zelda & Jazz album years ago, and it completely changed how I heard video game music. Jazz versions of Zelda themes sound unusual at first, but they carry that same sense of discovery that the games have. Hearing Korok Forest or Gerudo Town with saxophones and piano rhythms gives me the same calm feeling I get while exploring in Breath of the Wild. I appreciate that they focus on the newer titles this time. The compositions in Tears of the Kingdom already have complex harmonies that naturally blend into jazz. I think GameChops made a good choice by keeping it mellow rather than going for showy solos.

Honestly, I liked the older Zelda & Jazz albums better when they focused on classic tunes like Gerudo Valley or Song of Storms. The new games are nice, but their music feels more ambient. Turning that into jazz might sound too sleepy. Still, I respect the musicians for trying. I know jazz takes skill, and GameChops has talented producers. Maybe I will give it a try, but I do not expect to like it as much as the earlier albums.
