Quiver Distribution has announced that the thriller Hunting Jessica Brok will arrive in theaters nationwide on February 13. The titular character, Jessica Brok, was once an elite Black Ops soldier. But that’s all in the past and she’d rather it stay that way. She’s made a new, quiet life for herself and her daughter in rural South Africa, but as you might expect, it doesn’t stay quiet forever. Before long, she’s betrayed by someone she thought was a friend and her location is outed to a ruthless warlord she hunted in the past. Seeking revenge against Jessica, the warlord kidnaps her daughter…and Jessica is forced to use all of her old skills to rescue her and take down the warlord and his thugs once and for all. Hunting Jessica Brok stars Danica Jones, Clyde Berning and Richard Lukunku. It was directed by Alastair Orr from a script written by himself, Garth McCarthy and David. D Jones. The setting in rural South Africa is also a good choice, because we do not see that often in action thrillers. I do not know much about Danica Jones, but if she can sell both the calm mother side and the trained soldier side, then this could work well. The plot is not new, but I do not think every movie needs to be new. Sometimes execution matters more. Kidnapped daughter stories usually depend on how serious the threat feels. If the warlord is written well and not cartoonish, then the tension will be strong. I also like that she is betrayed by someone she trusted. That part usually hurts more than random enemies. I will probably watch this if reviews say the action feels grounded and not too exaggerated.

For me, this sounds like a solid Friday night movie. I am not expecting deep ideas or big twists, but I want something tense and focused. A former Black Ops soldier living quietly always raises questions, and I like that the movie does not pretend her past disappears easily. The daughter being taken is a heavy motivation, but it makes sense. I hope they do not make the child just a plot tool and forget her personality. I am also curious about how violent this will be. The last line about heads rolling feels like they are warning viewers already. I do not mind violence if it serves the story. I just do not want shaky camera and noisy editing. I also like that it is a female lead in this type of role, but I hope they write her as a person, not just a symbol. If it stays focused and serious, I think it can be enjoyable even if the story is familiar.

The cast is not very famous, but that is not always bad. Sometimes lesser-known actors try harder. I am more interested in the director, since Alastair Orr usually keeps things lean. I expect violence, but hopefully not excessive for no reason.

This feels like the kind of action thriller that knows its audience. Parents protecting their child is always effective. I am not looking for originality here. I just want clear action, simple motivations, and a lead who feels dangerous without talking too much.
