After the smash hit debut of their Absolute line, DC Comics has been branching out with the release of more titles. Recently solo books were launched for Batwoman, Deathstroke and Lobo, and this April they’ll be followed by new #1 ongoings for Zatanna and Firestorm. With guys like Constantine and Swamp Thing some people think of the supernatural corner of the DCU as “grimdark,” but as long as it also has a brunette running around in a top hat and stage outfit 24/7, it’ll never completely come off that way to me. Zatanna is still one of the best superheroes in the stable and a new series with her name on it is always welcome. So what’s going on with her lately? She’s gotten a promotion, looks like. To no less than Queen of Magic! Or “Prime Magus” as the term apparently applies. Also this doesn’t appear to have been a thing before. “As the newest and first Prime Magus in millennia, it is now Zatanna’s sworn responsibility to oversee and guide the world of magic,” DC says. “All eyes are on her. How will she accomplish this grand task? How will she shoulder this heaviest of responsibilities? How will […]

Firestorm’s story actually sounds more intense than I expected. Buildings getting destroyed and people vaporized? That’s kind of scary when you think about it. I like that the article mentions the townspeople have to deal with it themselves. It makes me think the story might focus on the human side of superheroes instead of just showing them flying around saving the day. I also wonder how Ronnie Raymond will be portrayed. Is he a villain or just reckless? The fact that magic people like Zatanna exist in the same world is interesting, but I kind of like the idea that the story focuses on ordinary people facing chaos. It’s different from a lot of superhero comics where the heroes always solve everything. I think it could give Firestorm a unique perspective compared to other DC books.

I’ve always liked Zatanna, but seeing her promoted to “Prime Magus” actually makes me more curious. It feels like DC is finally giving her the weight she deserves without taking away the fun personality. I like that she’s still doing her top hat tricks and spells while handling all this responsibility. I don’t know how it’s going to play out, but it seems like the writers are trying to blend serious stakes with her charm, which I appreciate. I’ve read a lot of comics where magic characters suddenly get grimdark stories and lose their personality, but this feels different. I also think Jamal Campbell is a great choice. His style fits Zatanna’s vibe perfectly. I’m just hoping the story balances big magical threats with smaller, more personal moments that show why she’s so likable in the first place. Overall, this is a book I’ll definitely check out when it comes out in April.

I like that Zatanna’s personality isn’t getting lost with her promotion. She’s still described as playful and confident even with serious responsibilities. That’s rare for comics where characters suddenly become more serious. I also like that DC is giving her her own ongoing series. She doesn’t get as much attention as other heroes, and it’s nice to see her shine. The idea of overseeing magic while still being herself makes me think there will be a mix of epic battles and fun moments. I’m hoping the story will explore her magic in interesting ways instead of just giving her a bunch of new powers with no explanation. I’m optimistic about this one.

I am excited to see more Zatanna comics because she never gets the spotlight like Batman or Superman. The fact that she’s now “Prime Magus” makes me hope the story goes beyond simple spellcasting and explores magical politics or rules. I also think having Jamal Campbell back as the artist is perfect because his style is expressive and matches her energy. I’m not a fan of grimdark takes, so I like that she’s still playful and confident. I feel like this could be the start of a series that really builds her world instead of just telling small adventure stories. I will definitely follow this when it launches in April.
