No, ChatGPT Did Not Write The Stranger Things Finale, Even If It Feels Like It

Ever since the Stranger Things finale went live on New Years, there have been a lot of…theories floating around regarding why it turned out the way it did. A lot of people were displeased with it (this fan included), but it’s led to the kind of conspiracy weirdness that would come out of Murray Bauman’s thick beard. Let’s not lose our minds…let’s debunk one of them. The Season 5 making-of documentary, One Last Adventure, went live a couple days ago and among other things, nitpickers examining every screen found something they considered sus: ChatGPT tabs open in some browsers. The conclusion: A CHATBOT WROTE THE SCRIPT! Obviously! Folks, this is not a smoking gun and it is in fact quite the leap. ChatGPT serves many purposes besides getting you out of doing your job. I want you to look at your browser right now and tell me which tabs are open at the top. Don’t lie to me. The question is, can anyone who was really there confirm as an eyewitness that a chatbot was used for the script? Martina Radwan, who created the documentary and was around for the full season’s production, had this to say to THR: “No, […]

I think many people felt that way because there's so many loose ends that remain unsolved because they were so eager to end the story. Because the show is originally meant to be seven seasons, but because of the puberty of the actors and the pandemic, they have to be in a hurry and end it in a high note.

I get why people jumped on the ChatGPT theory, because the finale felt like it came from another planet compared to previous seasons. But reading this, I’m actually relieved. It’s funny to think that after all the chaos, it’s just normal humans being chaotic. I’ve been rewatching scenes, trying to figure out what went wrong, and honestly, some decisions just don’t make sense. Will suddenly being a powerhouse for one scene and then disappearing? El’s arc feeling inconsistent? Those are human mistakes, not robot errors. It makes me appreciate the writers’ creativity in general, though—they still gave us some iconic moments. I just wish the finale had more coherence, because the buildup over all these seasons deserved a stronger landing. At least now I can stop worrying that AI is secretly taking over Hollywood.

Guys, I think people underestimate how messy creative work can be. I’ve been part of small team projects where nothing is finished until the last minute, and watching that happen on a show with millions of dollars and expectations must be even crazier. I don’t believe a bot wrote anything. You can feel the human touch in character interactions, in small details, even in the weird pacing choices. The finale definitely crashed a little, but I almost admire the risk-taking. They threw a lot of ideas at the wall, some stuck, some didn’t, but that’s the creative process. I’m just trying to enjoy the show for what it is rather than inventing conspiracies.

Honestly, I was ready to blame AI like everyone else, because some scenes were hard to follow. But thinking about it, it’s actually more believable that humans messed up than that a chatbot suddenly mastered emotional storytelling. It does feel like they were figuring things out in the moment. The unfinished script explains a lot. It doesn’t make the finale perfect, but it does make it understandable. I appreciate that the writers still managed to throw in moments that worked really well. I guess it’s frustrating, but not catastrophic.

I can’t stop laughing at the idea that ChatGPT somehow replaced a writers room. Like, do people really think an AI can capture the messiness of human emotion and friendship the way Stranger Things does? The finale wasn’t flawless, sure, but there’s still heart in it. The fact that there were unfinished scripts makes sense—it feels human, chaotic, real. I actually find that comforting. If a robot wrote it, I would have been angry. Knowing it’s just normal human decision-making errors makes me like the show even more, flaws and all.
