You all know and love Mystery Science Theater 3000. But how would you “play” it at home? The answer is obvious: you load up a bad movie, and then you and your friends riff on it. What the new board game from Cryptozoic and Shout Factory proposes is…what if there were enhancements to that experience? Tom Servo would say “I’m listening.” In Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Game, now on Kickstarter (at least for the next 24 hours…we found out about this one late), three to eight players assume the roles of involuntary “guests” of the Satellite Of Love, while one assumes the role of the Mads. The Mads player lays down Movie Moments cards featuring screenshots from the films in the show’s most iconic episodes. The other players have a hand of random Riff cards, each with a remark. Their goal is to lay down the Riff that most closely matches the scene and the Mads will be most pleased with. Also, there’s betting involved. Each olayer has three Betting Tokens numbered 1, 3 and 5, which they play face-down. If they feel their Riff has the best chance, they can bet the most tokens. Once the Mads choose […]

This game looks like a lot of fun, especially for people who have watched MST3K before. I like that it’s designed for three to eight players because that’s usually the perfect size for a casual game night. The mechanics seem simple enough that anyone could pick it up without reading complicated rules. The fact that it lets you riff on real movie moments instead of only cards gives it more flexibility. Betting tokens are a nice touch because it adds strategy without overcomplicating things. I’m glad they’re offering it as a deluxe version on Kickstarter with extra pieces because that makes it feel special, but I hope they make a version that’s easier to get later. This seems like a solid choice for people who enjoy board games and MST3K at the same time.

I honestly want to get this game just to spend time riffing with friends. MST3K is perfect for a group of people who like joking around, and the way this game works seems like it really encourages that. I like that the Mads role rotates because everyone gets a turn making decisions, and the dry erase card gives freedom for creativity. The betting tokens are a nice twist that adds a bit of tension and fun. $60 isn’t cheap, but for a deluxe version, it’s understandable. I feel like this could make game nights way more fun than usual, and I’m definitely going to back it before the Kickstarter ends tomorrow.

This game seems really fun for parties. I can already imagine people laughing so hard while trying to come up with the perfect riff. I like that the Mads player rotates because everyone gets a chance to play the “boss,” and that adds variety. Betting Tokens are interesting because it gives a little competitive edge instead of just joking around. I might try using an actual movie instead of the cards, like the really cheesy ones from the 80s. That could make it even funnier. Kickstarter is always stressful for me, but this seems like one of those projects worth supporting. I like that it’s fan-run and not a big corporate thing. I just hope the game isn’t too complicated because I want it to be accessible for all my friends.

MST3K has always been about watching terrible movies and making jokes, and this game takes that concept and makes it interactive. The Betting Tokens give it a competitive angle I didn’t expect, and I like that the Mads role changes so everyone can participate. Using a real movie instead of just cards is also a cool idea because it keeps the game fresh. $60 is a little pricey, but I see why they charge that for the deluxe version. I could see myself buying this just for a night of laughter with friends. The dry erase Riff card is smart because it encourages creativity, which is really what MST3K is all about. It feels like a game designed for fans who really get the humor.
