The 40th anniversary of the original Back To The Future happened last July. If you were worried Universal wouldn’t be properly celebrating one of their most iconic films, think again. They’re just getting started late…but will make up for lost time with a Halloween super deluxe theatrical re-release of the film nationwide. It will also be the nicest-looking print of Marty’s trip to the 1950s ever seen by man, with Dolby Cinema, 4DX, D-Box and IMAX showings. It’s a dreamboat! “This marks the first time Back to the Future will be presented on the world’s largest screens, offering fans the opportunity to experience the film’s scope and spectacle in the most immersive formats yet,” the studio says. Universal also announced that the Back to the Future trilogy will be getting a 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Gift Set. I think this rerelease is a good idea because many younger viewers have never seen Back to the Future in theaters. Watching it at home is not the same. Seeing Marty and Doc Brown on a huge IMAX screen with advanced sound could make the story feel new again. I am planning to buy tickets because I want to experience the movie with an audience. Sharing the laughter during the 1950s scenes and the tension of the clock tower sequence will make it special.

I think the Halloween date is very smart. Families can dress up as Marty, Doc, or even Biff, and watch the film together. It adds to the event feeling. I will bring my kids to this because they only know the movie from streaming, and I want them to feel the excitement of sitting in a packed theater.

Personally, I just want a simple way to watch the movie in the best quality. I do not care about mini guitars or license plates. I only care about the film looking sharp and the sound clear. For that reason, I will choose the theatrical showing over the box set.

I am honestly surprised they waited until after the July anniversary to do this. It would have been better to launch the rerelease during the actual month. But still, October is fine because it creates a fun seasonal event. I will not miss it.
