IDW’s entered a new deal with Webtoon to bring one of its most popular graphic novels to the service. Guess they’ve made about as much money on the print version as they can. It’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, something you may have heard about. The Last Ronin was a TMNT story by Kevin Eastman, based on old notes of his, set in a hypothetical dark future where Michelangelo is the last living Turtle. The book was such a success, there’s supplemental books, a sequel, and even a movie adaption in the works. IDW entered the Webtoon space a few months ago with vertical versions of Godzilla: Unnatural Disasters, Sonic the Hedgehog, Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, and others (bot those were the biggest). TMNT: the Last Ronin is their biggest freebie yet. And it will be joined by Cyberpunk 2077, a Webtoon adaption of the comic based on the video game that is based on the tabletop game (whew). Cyberpunk will be the first series to launch as part of IDW’s expanded partnership with Dark Horse Comics, and will launch on Webtoon August 8. TMNT: The Last Ronin will follow it on August 23. I just have […]

This is actually amazing news! I always wanted to read The Last Ronin but didn’t want to pay $20 for something I might not like. Now I can try it on Webtoon and decide later if I want the full version. Also, the Cyberpunk 2077 comic sounds cool too. I love the game, even if it was buggy at first. Now it’s one of my favorite worlds. If the comic is written well and fits the vibe, I’m all in. Some people are too serious about formats. I get it, but sometimes people just want to read stories, even if it’s on a small screen.

I’ve been collecting comics for 30 years and this kind of thing annoys me. Not everything needs to be made for Webtoon. The Last Ronin was designed for a traditional layout. Shrinking it down ruins the impact of the art and pacing. Some scenes hit hard because of their panel arrangement, and now that gets broken apart into narrow strips. What’s next? Maus in vertical scroll? Watchmen in emoji format? Kids today need to learn that reading something on a phone is not the same as reading a graphic novel.

Honestly, I’ve never read a TMNT comic in my life. I only watched the cartoons when I was younger. But this article got me interested. The idea of only one turtle surviving sounds very emotional. I don’t have a comic store near me, so I’m glad Webtoon is offering it. I know some people say it’s not the “real” version, but maybe this is how I can discover it. If I like it, I will try to buy the original book online. But this gives me a chance to try it out without risk.

Makes sense. Everything is mobile now. Most people don’t want to carry books or sit at a desk to read comics. Webtoon lets you read on the bus or in bed. I didn’t know about Last Ronin before, but now I do. I’ll check it out when it drops. If I like it, I might search for more. I don’t care if it’s not the same format. I just want good stories, and I hope this one delivers.

I remember when I first watched the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon in the '90s. I never imagined it would get a dark future story like The Last Ronin. I read the hardcover when it came out. It was deep, emotional, and not what I expected. Seeing Mikey like that broke my heart. Putting it on Webtoon will definitely introduce it to younger audiences, but I agree with the writer—people need to read the full version. Some stories are meant to be big and heavy, not fast and scrollable. Still, I hope it finds new fans.

Okay, so they’re adapting Cyberpunk 2077 into a Webtoon? That makes me nervous. I like the game now, after all the patches, but the world is hard to get right in writing. You need the grit, the sadness, the weird humor. If they just make it look pretty without capturing the themes, it won’t work. Same for The Last Ronin. These stories are heavy. I hope they’re not simplifying them too much just to make them fit the format.
