Lucasfilm Releases First Images From Maul And Ahsoka Season Two

Last April Disney and Lucasfilm announced Maul: Shadow Lord, a Disney+ series set starring the former Sith Lord (who drops the “Darth” after departing with the Empire). Now he’s a SHADOW Lord….totally different. And above is the first publicly released image of him. This show is CG animation, by the way. Sam Witwer reprises the role, but doesn’t appear onscreen. Maul: Shadow Lord is set after The Clone Wars and is about the title character “plotting to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire.” We’ve seen several chapters of Maul’s life already: he appeared on The Clone Wars in an arc where he tried to turn Ahsoka to the Dark Side, at the end of Solo, as a teaser for a nonexistent sequel, and on Star Wars Rebels, where he was an old man who attempted to manipulate Ezra Bridger. But that’s not all! A big con requires announcements bigger than one show! Lucasfilm also released the first image from the second season of Ahsoka, the live-action continuation of Rebels starring the fan favorite double-saber wielder. It’s Ezra from the previous paragraph, who anyone watching the show knows was the drive beyond the entire first season. […]

I am really looking forward to Maul: Shadow Lord. I have always thought Maul deserved more stories. He is more than just a villain with a double-bladed lightsaber. After what we saw in Clone Wars and Rebels, I wanted to see how he would survive after losing everything. I think it makes sense for him to try and control the criminal world. It fits his character. Also, Sam Witwer is great as his voice. He understands Maul better than anyone.

As for Ahsoka Season Two, I hope they do not waste time. Ezra was finally found, but now Ahsoka and Sabine are lost? I hope this does not turn into the same plot again. But I trust the creators. Rebels had a strong ending, and Ahsoka did a good job continuing the story. I just want more action and good writing, not filler episodes.

I still remember sitting in the cinema in 1999, watching The Phantom Menace for the first time. When Obi-Wan suddenly sliced Darth Maul in half and he fell down that shaft, I thought, “Well, that’s it for him.” It was such a fast ending for a villain who barely spoke but left a strong impression. His look, the red and black face, the horns, the double lightsaber — he felt dangerous even without much screen time.

To be honest, I thought it was a waste. He had potential. So when Clone Wars brought him back years later, I was shocked. At first, I thought the idea was silly. How can someone survive that? But the way they explained it, and how Sam Witwer voiced him, made me see him differently. He wasn’t just a fighter anymore. He became angry, bitter, and interesting.

The announcement of Maul: Shadow Lord shows Lucasfilm is interested in re-contextualizing its villains. Maul, who began as a shallow figure of menace, has been redefined through animation into a character of depth, trauma, and obsession. This new series could explore themes like power in exile, failed legacy, and the illusion of control. It may serve as a bridge between his days with Crimson Dawn and his eventual loneliness in Rebels.

Regarding Ahsoka Season Two, I find the character dynamics more compelling than the plot itself. Ezra’s return and the exile of Ahsoka and Sabine suggest a cycle of sacrifice that might become a central idea. However, narrative repetition is a risk. The writers must develop these arcs rather than merely reshuffle them.

I love that they’re going full CG for Maul: Shadow Lord. This opens so many creative doors. If the animators can match the quality of Clone Wars Season 7 or even Tales of the Jedi, this could be beautiful. I’m not worried about Sam Witwer — he always delivers.

Maul in a criminal underworld story sounds like it could take inspiration from The Godfather or Narcos. That could be interesting. Meanwhile, Ahsoka Season Two might benefit from better pacing. Season One had good moments, but the structure felt uneven. I’m hoping they learned from it.

Ah yes, another Disney+ series. Because that’s what Star Wars needs — more shows, fewer movies. I remember when Maul was cut in half and we thought that was the end. Now he’s a “Shadow Lord” starting a mafia. Great. Next, maybe Jabba’s cousin will get a spin-off called “Slime Lord.”

Anyway, Ahsoka and Sabine are now the ones stranded? I swear they’re just trading places like it’s a team-building exercise. I like Ezra, but come on. They better move the story forward, not sideways.
