The new supernatural horror anime The Summer Hikaru Died, based on the manga of the same name, debuted on Netflix a few weeks ago. If you’ve been enjoying the show, you should be pleased to learn it will have a presence at Otakon 2025, taking place next month. CyberAgent, Inc., who co-produces the series along with KADOKAWA, announced today that there will be a panel at Otakon featuring Shuichiro Umeda, the voice actor of Hikaru. Fans can look forward to a live reading of scenes from the anime, as well as “a discussion exploring the series’ emotional complexity, mysterious atmosphere, and appeal of the characters.” After the panel concludes, attendees will have the change to get an autograph from Umeda. The Summer Hikaru Died is about an ordinary high school boy, Yoshiki, who starts having strange experiences and encounters he can’t explain. Might they have something to do with the mysterious being he keeps running into that resembles his recently-deceased best friend Hikaru Indou? Is it Hikaru himself? I’m really happy this anime is getting attention at Otakon. I’ve been watching The Summer Hikaru Died every week since it started, and the tone is so different from other horror shows I’ve seen recently. It’s quiet and emotional but still scary. The idea of someone returning from the dead but not really being the same is very creepy to me. I like how the story doesn’t explain everything quickly. It keeps me thinking.
Having Shuichiro Umeda at the event is a great idea. His voice acting brings so much feeling to Hikaru, especially in those scenes where he talks like the real Hikaru but acts strange. I would love to hear a live reading of the scenes. That would help fans see how emotional the story is behind the animation.
I hope the discussion at Otakon will go deep into Yoshiki’s feelings and the mystery of the creature that looks like Hikaru. Maybe we will get some small clues. This story seems simple at first, but it has many layers. I wish I could go to the panel myself. If someone here attends, please tell us what they talked about. I think this anime could be something really special if it stays this strong.

I just started watching this anime and it already got me hooked. The story is weird but in a good way. I like horror but this one feels different. It’s more quiet and sad, not like jump scares all the time. Hikaru is creepy but I still feel bad for him, and I’m not sure why.
It’s cool that they’re doing a panel at Otakon. I like when voice actors show up and talk about their characters. A live reading sounds fun. Too bad I live far away from D.C.
Also, I hope they don’t spoil anything at the event. The mystery is what makes it exciting. I want to find out what’s going on with Hikaru slowly. I’ll keep watching and maybe read the manga later too. Good news for fans though!

I’ve read The Summer Hikaru Died manga since the beginning, and I was nervous when Netflix announced the anime. But honestly, the adaptation has been very faithful so far. The mood is perfect—quiet but haunting. It feels like something is always just a little off, and that’s exactly how the manga works.
I’m glad they invited Shuichiro Umeda. He’s doing a fantastic job as Hikaru. His voice sounds warm at first, but when you listen carefully, it’s not quite right. That’s important because the story depends on us feeling something is wrong, even when things look normal.
The panel sounds great. I’d love to hear them explain their choices for sound design, direction, and how they approached the characters’ emotional distance. There’s a lot going on between the lines in this story—like the guilt, fear, and longing that Yoshiki hides.
I wonder if they’ll also talk about how horror in this show is more emotional than visual. It’s about grief and identity, not just monsters.
I hope someone records the panel for fans who can’t go. Events like this are important because they help more people understand why this show is special. And maybe we’ll get news on a second season if we’re lucky.

Seeing that there will be a panel with Shuichiro Umeda makes me excited for the fans who can attend. A live reading will help show just how much emotion the actors put into their roles. Umeda’s voice really makes Hikaru feel both familiar and strange at the same time.
I hope the panel also talks about the relationship between Hikaru and Yoshiki. It’s so complex and sad.
Too bad I can’t go to Otakon this year, but I’ll be following news and updates online. I really hope more people discover this anime. It’s not loud or flashy, but it has a strong heart and makes you think deeply.
