If you don’t know the name Motoi Sakuraba, you’re more familiar with his work than you realize. He’s a video game music composer who’s worked on the soundtracks to Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, Golden Sun, Baten Kaitos, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Phantasy Star Nova, and Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, among others. Odds are, you have a particular video game track you’re fond of, that he was responsible for. Now he’s signed up to release albums for Scarlet Moon Records. As a contributor, Sakuraba will partner with Scarlet Moon to work with studios outside of Japan. Through this arrangement you’ll be hearing new albums with compositions from the man, and potentially, indie RPGs and other games with his scores. Sakuraba is also responsible for the soundtracks of several Nintendo sports titles including Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, and Mario Sports — that’s correct, the first appearance of Waluigi was scored by his music. He’s a frequent contributor to the Super Smash Bros series as well, and created a remix of the original Super Mario Bros. theme for the official Nintendo Famicom 20th anniversary album. ”I have composed music for games in other Asian countries and Europe,” says Sakuraba. “I want to compose as […]

Motoi Sakuraba is one of the reasons I fell in love with JRPGs. His music in Baten Kaitos and Golden Sun gave me emotions I couldn’t explain back then. Now, seeing him join Scarlet Moon gives me hope we’ll get more amazing RPG soundtracks that don’t sound generic. I also really respect his attitude. The way he wants to help game developers regardless of country or size shows he cares more about the music than the fame. I’m curious what kind of indie developers will get the chance to work with him. This is a good match.

It’s strange, I never remembered his name, but I recognize almost every game listed here. That means his music has been part of my life without me knowing it. That’s powerful. I like that he’s now working globally. It shows growth. I think music can connect people even when language can’t, and his soundtracks do exactly that. I’m not a music expert, but I know when something moves me. His work always does.

I’m not going to pretend I’m a hardcore gamer, but I do play Mario Golf and Smash Bros, and I always noticed how energetic and fun the music was. It makes sense to me now. I think Scarlet Moon is making a smart move here. Getting someone who already has years of experience and success will help smaller studios gain more attention too. I hope this means more creative risks with game soundtracks again.

Motoi Sakuraba’s music in Valkyrie Profile made that game unforgettable for me. It wasn’t just background noise—it felt like part of the world. I think a lot of modern games forget how important music is to storytelling. I admire how humble he sounds in his statement. He’s a veteran, yet he still speaks with respect toward both small and big game makers. That kind of humility is rare. I'm excited to see how this partnership opens more doors, especially for international developers who want his touch in their projects.
