You know Clear River Games for their revivals of obscure arcade hits — their recent work on R-Type and the Snow Bros series, for example. What they’re working on next is their most obscure property yet — unlike the others, it never left Japan. It’s Mamorukun, the bullet hell / cute ’em up, and those of us who’ve never played it will get the chance this fall. That’s when Clear River will release Mamorukun ReCurse!, an ultra-deluxe version of the arcade shooter for modern consoles. You control Mamoru, a recently deceased hero who wakes up in The Netherworld and discovers he’s the key to saving it from destruction. After quickly making three new friends (Mayuno, Kinya, and Beniko), they team up to stop the invasion of the World Of Darkness that is about to consume everything. Well, it’s not as dramatic as the plot makes it sound. Mamorukun ReCurse has an interesting mechanic: the ability to change the game’s difficulty in real time. By using “Curse Bullets” you can make enemies stronger and harder to defeat…why would you do that? Because it’s an arcade game and it’s all about points. Defeating harder enemies nets you a bigger score. An arcade classic, […]

I’m genuinely glad this is coming out in English territories. I used to see clips of Mamorukun on YouTube years ago and always wondered why it never got localized. It’s a small title, sure, but the bullet hell mechanics and the character design always caught my eye. The idea of adjusting difficulty mid-game with Curse Bullets is clever. It adds a layer of decision-making that isn’t common in arcade shooters. I also like that they’re including multiple modes — not just a port, but something with real replay value. September isn’t too far away either. Hope it runs well on Switch.

Finally, a game that doesn’t just punish but rewards raising difficulty. I grew up trying to beat high scores on shooters like Ikaruga and Dangun Feveron, and this sounds like it’s right up my alley. If the scoring system is deep and the patterns tight, I’ll be hooked. Twin-stick controls are a nice addition too. If they nail the input feel and performance, this could be my next go-to game for daily runs. Please have online leaderboards!

This is all new to me. I never played bullet hell games before, but the “cute but scary” theme here looks fun. I like the idea that you can make the game harder yourself, it sounds scary but also exciting. Maybe this will help me get better at fast games. I’m also happy it has different modes so I can try slowly. If it’s too hard at first, maybe the Gallery or Story Mode can help me understand it more.

The characters are adorable. I’m buying it just to play as Beniko. She looks like she has an interesting personality. I don’t usually like bullet dodging games because I panic easily, but if I can dress my characters and enjoy the soundtrack, I’m good. Yosuke Yasui is a great composer too, I hope there’s a music player included in the Gallery Mode.

What caught my attention was the promise of modern twin-stick controls. That’s essential for a game like this to feel natural on console. I’m curious about the performance on Switch and older consoles like PS4. If they optimize well and offer 60fps, that’s going to make a big difference for responsiveness. The widescreen support is also important for visibility, especially in bullet hell games where every pixel counts. Looking forward to tech reviews after launch.
