“Ashfall” (aka “Mount Paektu”) is a 2019 Korean film, categorized as Survival, Thriller, Action, and Disaster; streaming free with ads on Tubi TV. SUMMARY: A brave team of South Korean explosives experts have to detonate a bomb to prevent a volcanic eruption that could destroy both Koreas. But there’s a complication. The volcano is in North Korea and the only person who knows how to tell the team where to go is in a North Korean prison, arrested on suspicion of being a South Korean agent. The South Koreans think he may even be a double agent. Can he be trusted? Do they have a choice? It’s a disastrous life-or-death situation, and the team hopes he wants to live too!

What stood out to me the most was how Ashfall connected family with a national crisis. It’s not only about a volcano or explosions. It’s about priorities. Jo wants to see his child born. Lee just wants to protect his daughter. Those are small goals compared to saving a country, but they feel bigger. That’s what I liked. The writers showed that no matter how big the problem is, people still think about the ones they love first. That made the film strong for me. I would recommend it, not for the action, but for the emotional story.

I thought Ashfall tried to do too many things. It wanted to be funny, dramatic, political, and also a survival movie. That’s a lot. Still, I respect the ambition. I didn’t love it, but I didn’t hate it either. Some scenes were very strong, like when Jo lies to his wife. That hit hard. Other parts felt like filler. The actors gave great performances, but I wish the film had one clear focus. Was it about saving a nation, or about two men finding purpose through their families? Maybe both, but I think the mix was not always smooth.

Honestly, I didn’t think I would enjoy it. The poster looked like just another action movie. But the writing surprised me. The best part was how the story gave time to different characters. Professor Kang was my favorite. He felt like a real person. Not a perfect hero, just someone forced to make a choice. His frustration with the government was so relatable. I’ve seen other Korean disaster films like Pandora, but this one had a better pace and better humor.

Yes the movie poster is misleading. But I did like the stories for each character.
