“Collectors” is a 2020 Korean film, categorized as Heist, Adventure, Action, and Comedy with a touch of Revenge/Justice; streaming on Viki. SUMMARY: Is there really an Excalibur of Joseon? ♦ Remember Me? You Buried Me Alive! “Collectors” is about a little boy named Kang Dong-Goo, who was given “a second life”. He should have died but somebody looking for buried treasure found him instead. Although it was unintentional, saving that child’s life is far better than finding buried treasure. When the boy grew up, guess what he did for a living. He found cultural treasures and sold them for a pretty penny. An honest living? Uuuhh … not exactly.

I really appreciate when films like Collectors weave history and myth into the narrative. The mention of King Seongjong and the buried sword gave me chills — it's like Korea's version of Excalibur. I studied Korean history in college, and Seongjong’s reign was pivotal in solidifying Neo-Confucian values. The idea that his son might’ve buried a symbolic artifact with him in secret is poetic. This movie, even with its genre mix of heist and comedy, seems to touch on something deeper: the conflict between cultural preservation and personal vengeance.

I watched this with some friends last month, and honestly, it was just a good time. Yeah, it was kinda predictable, but the chemistry between the characters and the slick pacing kept me entertained. I liked Kang Dong-Goo’s smart but reckless vibe. Reminded me of Korean Indiana Jones with a grudge. And Dr. Johns? Totally stole every scene he was in. Not every movie has to be groundbreaking. Sometimes, you just want a fun

Lee Je-Hoon never disappoints. I followed him from Move to Heaven and Taxi Driver, so when I saw he was headlining this, I knew I had to check it out. What surprised me is how well the film balanced humor with suspense. There’s a certain charm in the way it pokes fun at the heist genre while still respecting the cultural weight of its plot. I admit, I watched it more for the cast than the story, but I ended up really enjoying both. Definitely a solid addition to the Korean film landscape.

This movie was way more fun than I expected. I came in thinking it’d be heavy, but it had great energy. The whole "buried alive as a kid, now selling artifacts" thing? Wild. And I loved the twist with who the buyer was. Not a masterpiece, but I’d watch it again.

I loved it!
