Jon Bernthal’s Punisher To Appear In Next Spider-Man Movie

Sony, who will seemingly hold on to the Spider-Man movie rights forever, reached a handshake deal with Disney for the Tom Holland films to take place in the canon Marvel Cinematic Universe and allow for cross-pollination between the studios. Usually that has meant at least one “mentor” figure from the MCU shows up to shepherd young Spidey, whether it’s Iron Man or Doctor Strange. But Spidey has grown quite a bit, and in this upcoming fourth film he’ll be a fully grown man — so instead of metal-clad billionaires or eccentrically dressed sorcerers he gets…The Punisher. The interesting thing here isn’t just that Punisher is appearing but that this is the first MCU crossover from someone who hasn’t been in a movie before. Jon Bernthal was introduced as the character in the Netflix Daredevil series; then he reappeared in the relaunched “Born Again” show, and now he’s headed for the big screen in a role no one expected. Punisher first appeared in Spider-Man comics as a villain, but he quickly switched to an antihero so he could get his own book. Driven by revenge for the death of his family (with a bit of post-Army PTSD thrown in), Frank Castle […]

I’ve been waiting for this kind of crossover since the Netflix days. Jon Bernthal’s Punisher was one of the only live-action Marvel portrayals that felt brutally honest. No sugarcoating, no hero speeches — just raw trauma and justice. Now that Spider-Man is maturing, it makes sense to bring in a figure like Frank Castle instead of another moral compass. It’s more realistic. Life isn’t about constantly being mentored; sometimes you face the dark parts of the world head-on. I just hope Disney doesn’t water him down too much. The Punisher isn’t supposed to be likable. He’s supposed to be necessary.

Punisher in a Spider-Man movie? I’m not sure. I always liked my Spidey lighthearted. He’s someone my kids can watch. Punisher doesn’t fit that tone. Guns, death, vengeance — that’s not what Spider-Man is about. I understand Spidey is growing up, but does that mean the movies have to lose their heart? I hope they find a balance, because I don’t want to skip this movie over content concerns. Bernthal is a great actor, no doubt. But the character he plays doesn’t belong in a Spider-Man film meant for all ages.

I grew up reading “Brand New Day,” and I hate that they’re naming the movie after it. That arc almost made me stop reading comics. That said, Jon Bernthal is one of the most accurate castings Marvel ever made. The guy just is Frank Castle. Spider-Man and Punisher have a weird dynamic in the comics — not quite friends, but not enemies either. It could actually work well on screen if they show the tension. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man needs something new, and Punisher might force him to question his own boundaries. That’s interesting to me. Just don’t make this some random team-up without meaning.

This is the kind of shakeup the MCU needs. I’m tired of Spider-Man always getting paired with another popular character just to boost ticket sales. But this time it feels different. Punisher brings a completely different kind of energy. He doesn’t do quips. He doesn’t hug. He’s all business. That’s going to clash hard with Spidey’s emotional core, and I want to see how that unfolds. Bernthal has already proved he can carry a series. Putting him in a movie with a character who still believes in second chances might give us the most complex Spider-Man film yet. I’m hopeful.

Seeing Spider-Man team up with Punisher might help people finally understand how different their morals are. One spares lives, the other takes them. That conflict can lead to a powerful message, especially in today’s world where justice is a blurry concept. I'm interested in how Peter Parker will react when he's pushed by someone like Castle. Tom Holland can definitely handle that kind of emotional pressure in a role. I just hope they don’t reduce Punisher into comic relief or make him say one-liners. That would destroy what makes him effective.
