“The First Night with the Duke” is a 2025 Korean drama series, with 12 episodes, categorized as Historical, Romance, Fantasy, and Supernatural; based on a web novel; streaming Only on Viki. SUMMARY: A modern-day college student wakes up in her favorite historical period romance novel. But wait! Is she dreaming or did she time travel? ♦ When I Woke Up I Was Lying Next to the Duke In “The First Night with the Duke”, “K” is a modern-day college student who doesn’t have much of a social life. She’s obsessed with reading “The Obsessive Tyrant” because “reading a book is like a person’s life is coming to you”. Then she finds out that the book will no longer be published. WHAT? But the story hasn’t ended! How could the writer do this? Her only joy in life has been taken away. She was furious and sent the writer a direct message saying that she could write a better story with her left foot. Right after she wrote that, she stood up, slipped on an empty bottle on the floor in her room with her left foot, fell backward, and knocked herself out. The writer responded by writing: ”If you’re so […]

I started watching this because of Seohyun, but I stayed because the story surprised me. At first, I thought it would be another basic time-travel romance, but this one actually has layers. K’s reaction to waking up next to the duke made me laugh out loud, especially because she was the one who made the first move! It’s funny and awkward, but it also shows how unpredictable things get when someone changes the story. I enjoy that she’s not acting like a usual drama lead—she drinks, messes up, and doesn’t always think before acting. I really wonder how she’ll fix the plot, or if she even should. Maybe this is her story now?

This is one of those dramas that plays with fiction in a smart way. It’s not just about romance—it’s about what happens when someone breaks the rules of a story. The setup reminds me of metafiction in literature, and that part is what I found most fascinating. “K” doesn’t belong in this world, and her presence changes everything. If you love books, this idea of falling into a novel and messing with canon is actually kind of scary and exciting. I want to see how she handles the consequences of her choices. Plus, Ok Taecyeon really fits the duke role. That casting was perfect.

Honestly, I didn’t expect much from this series. Time travel? A duke? Sounded a bit silly. But I got hooked fast. I like how the show doesn’t pretend to be super serious all the time. The humor is light, and the story moves quickly. It feels easy to follow even if you don’t know anything about Joseon history or webtoons. I like that. It’s fun and emotional but not confusing.

As someone who read the original web novel years ago, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about this. I actually liked Jo Eun Ae as the lead, so seeing the story shift to Cha Sun Chaek was strange at first. But surprisingly, the drama made it work. “K” brings in modern ideas, which clash with the old world in funny ways. That drunk scene? Unreal. I admit, I laughed and cringed. It's weird seeing a filler character become the star. I'm still rooting for the original love line, but this detour is definitely more fun than I thought it would be.

This is my first historical K-drama and I’m loving it. The dresses, the setting, the duke! I don’t usually watch shows like this, but my friend recommended it and I finished the first 4 episodes in one day. K is funny and relatable. She doesn’t act like a perfect character, and that makes it better. I’m still confused about some of the politics in the background, but it’s okay because the romance and awkward scenes keep me watching.

I have mixed feelings. The concept is interesting, but I think the pacing is rushed. Twelve episodes isn’t enough to build strong development between all characters. “K” adapting too quickly to her role in Joseon feels a bit unnatural. That being said, the visuals are well done and the chemistry between the leads is real. The idea of a reader falling into a book and ruining the plot is bold. I just hope they explore the cost of changing someone else’s story. Right now, it leans more on entertainment than consequences.

This show is everything I wanted! Romance, comedy, a strong female lead, and a magical twist. I love when girls from our world enter fantasy ones and shake things up. K is so funny, especially when she tries to "stay in the background" but ends up ruining the plot anyway. She’s a mess, but I like her. And the duke? I didn’t think I’d like a cold type, but he has some soft moments that make me melt. I hope they end up together, even if it wasn’t the original plan.

What drew me to this series wasn’t the romance—it was the setting. As someone who studies historical dramas critically, I’m glad they made some effort to recreate Joseon court life. Obviously, it’s still fiction, but there’s some attention to detail. The way K behaves—drinking in public, casually walking around—actually helps highlight how much modern behavior clashes with strict noble customs. It’s funny, but also informative. This kind of contrast keeps me watching.

I just wanna say: K is the most realistic isekai protagonist I’ve seen in a K-drama. She’s not graceful, not noble, just a chaotic modern girl dropped into a mess. The scene where she drunkenly meets the duke? Iconic. I clipped it and posted it online and everyone’s commenting like crazy. It’s refreshing to see a lead mess up everything instead of being perfect and beautiful all the time. I love this.
