Limited Run To Reprint Doom In A Box That Runs Doom

One of the biggest cliches in all of hackerdom is “Can it run Doom?” No matter how old or new, no matter how obscure or common, the first thing anyone will try to do once they gain access to a new machine is attempt to port the iconic 3D boomer shooter to it. When Nintendo came out with that “Alarmo” clock earlier this year, it took less than a week for someone to figure out how to run Doom on it, even though its sole controls are a dial. Limited Run just announced a new reprint of Doom (and Doom II!) and they’ve proven they get it. The CDs inside don’t just run Doom, the box they come in runs it as well. The Will It Run Edition features Doom-capable packaging. A monitor and USB ports are built into the sides, and if you connect a controller, the box will run Doom! Inside you’ll also find a replica of the round Cacodemon that has a small monitor in its face. Guess what it does — it runs Doom too! Everything runs Doom, and the whole package can be yours for six hundred and sixty-six dollars. But you may not have […]

This is the most ridiculous and most beautiful thing I’ve seen in a while. A box that runs Doom? That is such a perfect joke and a collector’s dream at the same time. I’ve been playing Doom since the '90s, and I never imagined one day I’d see a Cacodemon with a screen in its face playing the game. I don’t even care if it’s practical. It’s funny, it’s creative, and it respects the history of Doom and the whole meme culture around it. I might not have $666 to spare, but I still love that this exists.

I’ll probably just get the $30 version for Switch. I never played Doom before, but I heard it’s important. I don’t need all that stuff with boxes and monitors. Just the game is fine for me. But I think it’s cool they made all these editions.

I want the Will It Run Edition so badly. I don’t even care about playing Doom again — I already have it on every system I own. But a collector’s item that is also a working computer? That’s something I would love to put on my shelf. It would start so many conversations. It’s rare to see merchandise that is both playful and functional like this. I hope it doesn’t sell out too fast.

It looks cool, but man, $666 is way too much for me. That’s like two months of groceries. I like Doom, and I think it’s awesome that they keep doing these crazy reprints, but I just can’t justify spending that much. Maybe I’ll grab the cheaper version later if it’s still around.

Okay, this is dumb, but it’s dumb in a smart way. Like, who even thought of making a box that plays Doom? That sounds like a dare someone took too seriously, and then turned it into a product. And the price? Of course it’s $666. They knew exactly what they were doing. I’m not buying it, but respect to them for going all in.

Reading this brought back memories. I used to play Doom in my school’s computer lab after hours. Seeing it get this kind of attention so many years later feels special. I love that Limited Run didn’t just re-release the game, but added weird, creative tech into it. It feels like a tribute not just to the game, but also to the culture around it. I don’t know if I’ll get the most expensive version, but I will definitely buy one of the physical editions just to support this kind of fun thinking.

Honestly, this is fun to look at, but I think it’s a waste unless you’re a hardcore collector. A little screen on a toy Cacodemon doesn’t improve the game experience. I’d rather run Doom on my gaming PC with mods. But I guess if you’re into novelty items, this is peak novelty.

The whole idea that everything can run Doom has been around forever, but now someone actually turned that into a product. And it’s not just one thing — it’s a box, a demon, even cassette tapes! I love when people have fun with old games instead of just making remakes with better graphics. Doom is eternal, and now it’s even portable in a way nobody asked for. I kind of love that energy.
