Malcolm in the Middle is coming back, according to 20th Century Studios, who has greenlit a revival miniseries (think Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life) for Disney+. The description for the revival’s plot reads thusly: “Malcolm (Frankie Muniz) and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal (Bryan Cranston) and Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.” Malcolm was a groundbreaking and innovative show when it premiered on Fox in the late 90s and influenced just about every other family comedy afterward for years to come. Its frenetic editing style would often reduce certain scenes to the bare minimum for quick laughs….for example, I recall one scene where Dewey was dancing with an old woman who looked too old to be dancing. There is suddenly a freeze-frame on the woman, you hear a record scratch, and the very next shot is an ambulance driving away. Just enough to get it. This could be good, but it could also be a disaster. So much of what made Malcolm in the Middle great was the specific time period and the actors' young ages. Will the humor translate to a modern setting? Can Bryan Cranston recapture Hal's goofy charm at his age? And what about the kids? Frankie Muniz hasn't done much acting lately, and the rest have all moved on to other things. This revival has a lot to live up to, and I hope they don't tarnish the memory of the original show.

I'm so excited for this Malcolm in the Middle revival! The original show was hilarious and heartwarming, and I can't wait to see what the writers have in store for us. I hope they can recapture the magic of the original series, and I'm curious to see how the characters have changed over the years. I'm particularly interested in seeing how Malcolm has grown as a person and a father.

The original show was so well-written and well-acted, so I have high hopes for this new series. I'm excited to see how the writers will handle the characters' aging and the changing dynamics of the family.
