NES Tetris Joins Nintendo Switch Online Next Week

Nintendo has just announced that Tetris, the NES version, will be joining Nintendo Switch Online on December 12. Nintendo held the console rights to Tetris from the late 80s through much of the 90s. The partnership led to arguably the most iconic version of the game, the Game Boy version, which is on Nintendo Switch Online already. Nintendo also produced a home console version for the NES — but it wasn’t the only Tetris on the system. It’s a weird story. The rights to Tetris were kind of a tangled mess for a while. Atari, who held the arcade rights, also believed they had the console rights for some reason and produced an adaption of their Tetris arcade game for the NES. When Nintendo found out, they ordered the Atari version to be removed from store shelves so they could sell their own. Thing is, many consider the Atari Tengen version to be superior, but it’ll probably never be seen again. Not that the NES Tetris is bad — it’s Tetris. Like pizza, it’s so fundamental that it’s hard to screw up. You know how it goes — one of seven different blocks (called Tetrads back then and Tetrominoes now) […]

What's NES Tetris? Is it like that Tetris game on my phone, but older? That sounds kind of cool! I love Tetris, it's the perfect game to pick up and play for a few minutes, or get totally sucked into for hours. I'm curious about these different versions though. Is the NES version super different? Is the music like chiptune stuff? That sounds neat! I might have to check it out on Switch Online next week. Hopefully, it's not too hard to learn. Maybe there's a tutorial mode or something? Oh, and is there a way to play with friends? That would be awesome!

Finally! Having both the NES and Game Boy versions of Tetris on Switch Online is a dream come true for any Tetris completionist like me. Now I can finally experience the subtle differences between these classic versions on the same console. I know the Game Boy version is iconic, but there's something about the chunky blockiness of NES Tetris that holds a special charm. Plus, I'm dying to see how the music compares. The Tetris soundtrack is just as legendary as the game itself. And who knows, maybe someday they'll even add the Atari version... that would be the ultimate Tetris collection! This is also a great opportunity for younger gamers to experience these classic versions and see how the game has evolved over the years. Tetris is timeless, and having these historical versions readily available is fantastic for preserving gaming history.

Wait a minute, no two-player mode for NES Tetris on Switch Online? That's a bummer! I was hoping to have some epic Tetris battles with my friends. Maybe they'll add it as an update later on? One can dream! Still, classic Tetris is always fun, even solo. Maybe I can race my friends to see who gets the highest score. That could be a fun challenge. And hey, who knows, maybe they'll eventually add some online multiplayer modes for Tetris on Switch Online. That would be amazing! Imagine competing against Tetris players from all over the world. Now that's something I'd definitely be down for.

Remember when Tetris was the first game you ever played? Those square blocks falling from the sky, the satisfying sound of a line clearing... it was a revelation! And now, with NES Tetris on Switch Online, I can relive those childhood memories. It's like stepping back in time, but with better graphics and sound. I can't wait to play through the game again and see if I can still get those high scores I used to get. Maybe I'll even try the two-player mode with my kids. That would be a fun way to introduce them to this classic game. NES Tetris is a piece of gaming history, and it's great to see it being preserved and shared with new generations.
