Nintendo has just announced that Tetris, the NES version, will be joining Nintendo Switch Online on December 12. Nintendo held the console rights to Tetris from the late 80s through much of the 90s. The partnership led to arguably the most iconic version of the game, the Game Boy version, which is on Nintendo Switch Online already. Nintendo also produced a home console version for the NES — but it wasn’t the only Tetris on the system. It’s a weird story. The rights to Tetris were kind of a tangled mess for a while. Atari, who held the arcade rights, also believed they had the console rights for some reason and produced an adaption of their Tetris arcade game for the NES. When Nintendo found out, they ordered the Atari version to be removed from store shelves so they could sell their own. Thing is, many consider the Atari Tengen version to be superior, but it’ll probably never be seen again. Not that the NES Tetris is bad — it’s Tetris.
