The Thunderbolts* Revealed – And They Seem Familiar

Marvel hasn’t told us much about Thunderbolts*, one of the films they have planned for 2025 meant to bring moviegoers back around to superhero franchise movies. No one even knew what that asterisk in the title was about. But Disney held a special mini-D23 in the country of Brazil over the weekend, and one of the trailers shown off was essentially the first-ever real look at what Thunderbolts* is and what it’s trying to be. And….hmm. Stop me if you’ve heard this before: a ragtag band of misfits who don’t know what they’re doing is now being sent on a top-secret mission of destruction by a government agency who considers them expendable. Lately DC has been adapting and re-adapting The Suicide Squad like there’s no tomorrow, and now the fever has spread to Marvel? What gives? Where’s the demand? Okay, it’s not entirely Marvel Studios’ fault that Thunderbolts, asterisk or no, steals from Suicide Squad. For every thing one of the Big Two Comic Companies did that caught on, there was a ripoff equivalent on the other side. One company has Darkseid, the other has Thanos. I'm actually pretty excited for Thunderbolts*. The cast looks great, and I'm curious to see how they'll develop these characters. Plus, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is such a fascinating character. I hope she gets a bigger role in the MCU.

Seriously, Marvel? No Venom? No Hobgoblin? You're gonna waste this opportunity with a bunch of second-rate villains and anti-heroes? Sony's got such a tight grip on Spider-Man that we can't even get a proper Thunderbolts movie. It's a shame, really. This could have been a great chance to explore some of the darker, more complex aspects of the Marvel Universe. But instead, we're getting this watered-down version.

Wait, where's Songbird? She's one of the core members of the Thunderbolts! I know she hasn't debuted in the MCU yet, but I was really hoping they'd introduce her in this movie. She's a powerful character with a tragic backstory, and she could bring a lot to the team. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if she shows up in future MCU projects.

I'm a bit disappointed that they're marketing Bucky more than Yelena, even though she's the leader of the team. It feels like they're playing it safe, catering to the male audience and avoiding any potential backlash from toxic fans. I hope this doesn't overshadow Yelena's importance to the story. She's a fascinating character with a lot of potential, and I'd hate to see her relegated to a supporting role
