We’ve written several pieces about the tabletop game Free League is developing based around Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 picture book The Electric State. Each time, we’ve mentioned offhandedly that someone was working on a Hollywood adaption, but since we didn’t know much about that, we kept it brief. In any event, we didn’t expect much because someone already adapted Tales From The Loop, Stålenhag’s other book, for Amazon Prime and nobody noticed. That show barely existed. But The Electric State, um…well. The first image from the movie was released through Vanity Fair today and….it’s gonna be hard for people NOT to notice this one. It’s an image of Millie Bobby Brown surrounded by giant mascot robots, each taking a defensive stance while holding some kind of exotic weapon. The Electric State was an overall mellow book about an alternate apocalyptic 1990s where a young woman searched through vast and pretty wreckages of giant robots to find her lost brother. Millie Bobby Brown fighting robots with Mr. Peanut? This sounds like someone threw a bunch of random pop culture references into a blender. The Electric State book was a beautiful, bittersweet story. This Hollywood take seems overly action-packed and forgets the heart of the story.

Looks interesting! My kids loved Stranger Things, maybe this could be a fun family movie night. Giant robots seem a bit much, but Millie Bobby Brown always delivers a great performance. Plus, Chris Pratt? Sold! Gotta admit, Mr. Peanut is a weird choice, but hey, could be funny!

Whoa! This is definitely unexpected! The Electric State book had a very specific tone, but the Russo brothers doing a sci-fi war movie with sentient mascot robots? I'm intrigued! This could be a wild ride exploring themes of artificial intelligence and rebellion. Plus, Giancarlo Esposito and Stanley Tucci in the cast

Did I just read that Mr. Peanut is voiced by Jimmy Harrelson and sounds like Jimmy Carter?! This movie sounds absolutely bonkers! Who even comes up with this stuff? The robot war plot is a bit much, but the sheer absurdity of it all is hilarious. Maybe this will be a so-bad-it's-good cult classic. (78 words)
