We’ve written several pieces about the tabletop game Free League is developing based around Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 picture book The Electric State. Each time, we’ve mentioned offhandedly that someone was working on a Hollywood adaption, but since we didn’t know much about that, we kept it brief. In any event, we didn’t expect much because someone already adapted Tales From The Loop, Stålenhag’s other book, for Amazon Prime and nobody noticed. That show barely existed. But The Electric State, um…well. The first image from the movie was released through Vanity Fair today and….it’s gonna be hard for people NOT to notice this one. It’s an image of Millie Bobby Brown surrounded by giant mascot robots, each taking a defensive stance while holding some kind of exotic weapon. The Electric State was an overall mellow book about an alternate apocalyptic 1990s where a young woman searched through vast and pretty wreckages of giant robots to find her lost brother. The Electric State movie, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers Endgame), will be anything but mellow-toned.
