Universal Pictures Presents Wicked BEFORE Dorothy

Universal Pictures figured out a way to bridge the generation gap. “Wicked” will be released on November 22, 2024; a sequel is scheduled for release on November 21, 2025. “Wicked” is a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical. The stage musical was based on a 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire and characters from L. Frank Baum’s novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” was published in 1900. (Per Wikipedia.) This is flipping hilarious to me. Let me explain. I know I’m telling my age with this story, but hear me out. The first television broadcast of “The Wizard of Oz,” starring Judy Garland as Dorothy, was in 1956. In my childhood home, watching this cinematic wonder every year was TRADITION! In my memory, even though the yellow brick road wasn’t yellow, the red ruby slippers were not red, and there was no green in the Emerald City (because we had a black and white TV) … watching this dream-like film year after year was enchanting … mesmerizing … other-worldly. I'm so pumped for this movie! I've seen the Broadway musical countless times, and I'm a huge fan of the original cast recording. I'm really curious to see how the filmmakers will translate the stage show to the big screen. I'm hoping they'll keep the iconic songs and add some new ones too.

I'm so excited for this movie, but I can't help but wish it had been made decades ago when Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth were still young. They were absolutely perfect in the Broadway musical, and it would have been incredible to see them reprise their roles on the big screen. I know it's unrealistic to expect a movie to be made decades before it actually is, but it still feels like a missed opportunity.

Apparently, a movie played a significant role in Ariana Grande's personal life. She ended up divorcing her husband after falling for her co-star, Ethan Kline, who is well-known for his portrayal of SpongeBob SquarePants in a Broadway musical. The irony of the situation is that she cheated on her husband for a man associated with such a lighthearted and innocent character. Ariana was simply following her heart... straight into the arms of a guy who's known for playing a talking sponge. What a homewrecker!

I'm excited to see Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the roles of Elphaba and Glinda. They're both incredible performers, and I think they'll do a great job in the movie. I can't wait to see how they interpret the characters.
